  • Don’t count Bartlett out over one loss Sep 3, 2014 9:25 PM
Following Saturday’s 17-7 loss to Huntley, Bartlett quarterback Jordan Flint reminded his teammates via Twitter that “85 percent of Bartlett football teams have lost their first game and still made playoffs.” Flint is right. No area team has a better track record of making the playoffs after losing its first game than Bartlett.

  • Marmion, St. Edward’s Mattas shine at Elgin Country Club Sep 2, 2014 9:57 PM
The Elgin Country Club golf course played nicely to one of its members and to a bunch of first-timers on Tuesday at the 18-team Country Club Invite, hosted by South Elgin. St. Edward junior Michael Mattas, an ECC member, shot a career-low 69 to win the individual title while Marmion, which didn’t have a single player who had ever seen the 6,500-yard layout, captured the team championship with a 318 on a perfect day for golf.

  • Prairie Ridge brushes aside Jacobs Sep 2, 2014 10:36 PM
It was a night Jacobs girls volleyball coach Lisa Dwyer would like to forget ever happened. Sluggish and mistake-prone throughout the entire evening, the Golden Eagles were overpowered by Prairie Ridge 25-17, 25-18 in Fox Valley Conference action in Crystal Lake Tuesday night.

Lauren Van Vlierbergen was tired of a being a runner-up. So the talented Jacobs senior did something about it. After finishing second the last 2 years, Van Vlierbergen easily claimed top honors at Saturday’s McHenry County girls cross country meet held at Crystal Lake’s Lippold Park Saturday.

Prospect forward Alex Whiteman and midfielder Dominick Taldone weren’t allowed to repeat what the Jacobs student section said to them during the Knights’ 2-1 win over Jacobs Thursday night in Algonquin, but it was enough fuel to set the Knights’ competitive spirits ablaze.

  • Jacobs cruises past Bartlett in opener Aug 26, 2014 9:16 PM
Yes, there were first-match jitters and plenty of unforced errors. But when the last volleyball was spiked Tuesday night, Jacobs’ effort was good enough to produce a 25-10, 25-11 season-opening nonconference win over Bartlett at the Eagles Nest in Algonquin.

  • FVC Valley will be a dogfight again Aug 25, 2014 11:50 PM
Jacobs is determined to prove last year’s undefeated Fox Valley Conference Valley Division title was just the beginning of a long reign. Cary-Grove is out to claim its eighth FVC title in 11 seasons, thereby proving its 2013 second-place finish was an anomaly, not the new norm. While the head-to-head matchup between those teams in Algonquin in Week 7 will go a long way to deciding a champion, other hungry teams like deep Huntley, playoff-seasoned Dundee-Crown, reworked Crystal Lake South and improving McHenry won’t concede a thing to the Golden Eagles or Trojans.

  • Jacobs ready to reload Aug 27, 2014 3:37 PM
Jacobs coach Bill Mitz has been around the block enough times to know one player does not a team make. That’s why the 32nd-year coach is confident his Golden Eagles not only can withstand the graduation of last year’s consensus area player of the year — quarterback Bret Mooney, now at Colgate — they can again thrive.

  • Jacobs tabs O’Brien as new softball coach Aug 15, 2014 5:06 PM
Talk about a no-brainer. New Jacobs athletic director Jeremy Bauer made it official on Friday — Katie O’Brien is the Golden Eagles’ new head softball coach, succeeding Bauer himself. Could it have been anyone else? Not likely.

  • Round Lake Middle School teacher’s enthusiasm helps grow choir program Jul 14, 2014 12:46 PM
Round Lake Middle School music teacher Javier Diaz’s enthusiasm for choir has filtered to the pupils there. Since he was hired for the 2010-11 academic year, Diaz has taken the program from eight to about 90 students. There also are two choir classes part of the daily curriculum rather than a single after-school group. “I think the kids feed off my passion for the music,” said Diaz, 34, of Lake in the Hills.

  • When Jacobs’ Van Vlierbergen runs, people stop to watch Jun 13, 2014 8:05 PM
Jacobs senior-to-be Lauren Van Vlierbergen might have a future as a spokeswoman for E.F. Hutton, the investment banking firm famous for its commercials with the tag line, “When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen.” In the case of the ultra-talented Golden Eagles’ distance runner, when she sets foot on the track, people stop what they’re doing to watch her races.
