    With heavyweight boys golf programs like Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North in the field, Jacobs felt overlooked as a potential favorite to win Tuesday’s Class 3A Geneva regional. But the person whose opinion mattered most to Jacobs’ players certainly liked the Golden Eagles’ title chances. “Our goal was to win the regional,” Jacobs coach Gary Conrad said. “I just knew these guys had the ability to do it.”

    After finishing second to Jacobs in last year’s Fox Valley Conference boys golf tournament, Huntley coach Jim Rolando was looking for his team to climb that one step higher in this year’s meet. The Red Raiders got the job done. Led by a 73 from Jake Grabner and a 75 from Trent Craig, Huntley placed first with a score of 312 at Thursday’s FVC meet hosted by McHenry and held at Oak Grove Golf Course.

    Jacobs senior running back Josh Walker and Batavia junior cornerback Brett Bowman have earned Daily Herald MVP honors for their football performances in Week 5. Walker finished with 5 touchdowns in win against Dundee-Crown, while Bowman intercepted 3 passes in Batavia’s victory over St. Charles North.

    Cary-Grove senior Larissa Luloff admitted she put a lot of pressure on herself to win Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference girls golf tournament at Crystal Woods. “I really wanted to win individually,” Luloff said. “I put that pressure on myself and I probably shouldn’t have.” But Luloff beat the pressure, and the golf course, to shoot a 5-over par 77 and come away with the individual title that also led her Crystal Lake co-op team to the FVC team championship.

    Huntley senior Keagan Smith was glad he didn’t feel hamstrung in the final mile of Bartlett’s 13th Annual Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invitational. Smith’s powerful finishing surge helped him break up Lincoln-Way’s top two runners, Tommy Kolacki and Ian Peterson, and put him just 1.5 seconds behind Kolacki at the finish line Saturday morning at Sunrise Park. Smith finished the 3-mile race in 15:39.5. “Lately this season I still haven’t had something like that, and it felt good to have it again,” Smith said of his closing kick. “Usually around mile two my hamstrings go out, but today they never went out and I was feeling good.” Kolacki and Peterson were among four runners in the top seven as Lincoln-Way Central topped Huntley 33-61 for the team title. Fremd took third with 79.

  • Breakaway win for Van Vlierbergen in Bartlett Sep 27, 2014 7:00 PM
    Jacobs senior Lauren Van Vlierbergen broke away from the pack early in Bartlett’s 13th annual Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invitational at Sunrise Park on Saturday morning. Schaumburg’s top five runners were packed in at the end of the 3-mile race. The methods led to familiar results as Van Vlierbergen took individual honors by more than 30 seconds for the second straight year. And Schaumburg continued its team dominance of the 14-team meet, with senior Caroline Kurdej leading its five scoring runners to finishes in the top 15 as it beat St. Charles North 47-78.

    Fox Valley Conference defensive coordinators beware. Jacobs sophomore quarterback Chris Katernick is going to be around for a while. Katernick, who completed his first 9 passes, ended with a 11-for-14 effort and 203 yards and 3 touchdown passes as Jacobs blitzed Dundee-Crown 56-16 in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division opener for both teams in Alqonquin Friday night.

    It’s hard to keep a good team down. Jacobs found that out about visiting Dundee-Crown on Thursday night. The Chargers dropped Game 1 and fell behind by 4 points early in Game 2 and trailed midway through Game 3, but rallied to defeat the Golden Eagles 22-25, 25-21, 25-19 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls volleyball action in Algonquin.
