  • Huntley, Hampshire make holiday strides Jan 8, 2015 8:49 PM
Progress. That’s what most basketball teams look for at holiday tournaments and Huntley’s girls definitely made some at Montini. The Red Raiders went 3-1 at one of the top Christmas tournaments in the state, taking fifth place in the tough 16-team field. Huntley opened with a win over Batavia 43-37 before losing to Montini 63-33, but then came back and beat Geneva 66-63 in double overtime and Neuqua Valley 47-44. Geneva and Neuqua are leading their respective divisions in the Upstate Eight Conference.

  • Jacobs opens FVC Valley play with decisive win Jan 6, 2015 11:16 PM
One thing about the flip of the calender benefiting the Jacobs boys basketball team: the Golden Eagles could leave their 2-game skid and disappointing fourth place finish in the Hinkle Holiday Classic behind them. As far as the new year is concerned, after the Golden Eagles downed the Warriors in McHenry 56-38 Tuesday to begin Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play, it’s safe to say they’ve forgotten about the past and adjusted their minds to what’s ahead for them in 2015.

  • Jacobs loses lead, third-place game to Zion-Benton Dec 27, 2014 11:52 PM
Jacobs looked to be on its way to claiming third place in its Hinkle Holiday Classic as it overcame a sluggish start to build a 12-point lead late in the third quarter against Zion-Benton on Saturday night. But the Golden Eagles couldn’t overcome a sluggish ending as the defending tournament champion Zee-Bees (9-3) rallied for a 64-61 victory in Algonquin.

  • Cary-Grove’s Barker reaches 1,000 milestone Dec 26, 2014 11:04 PM
Cary-Grove 44, Mundelein 27: Katie Barker became the eighth player in C-G girls basketball history to score 1,000 career points in the Trojans’ (7-8) win at the Mundelein Holiday Tournament. Barker led all scorers with 16 points.

  • Larkin keeps its cool, downs Jacobs Dec 26, 2014 11:40 PM
It took just 2˝ minutes for Larkin to lose 75 percent of a comfortable 12-point lead in Friday night’s Hinkle Holiday Classic semifinal against host Jacobs. But the important thing head coach Deryn Carter and assistant Jon Winters noticed in a timeout with 1:12 left in the third quarter was the Royals weren’t losing their composure or confidence. Larkin (11-4) calmly responded to the challenge with a 66-51 victory to advance to Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game against Barrington (11-3), which beat defending champion Zion-Benton 88-81 in overtime.

  • Jacobs’ upset bid falls short at Wheaton North Dec 23, 2014 10:44 PM
Jacobs girls basketball coach Joe Benoit admittedly was looking for a “signature win” from his team Tuesday night. Although the Golden Eagles (5-7) came up on the losing end of a 46-37 decision to top-seeded Glenbrook South in the quarterfinals of the 31st annual Bill Neibch Falcon Holiday Classic at Wheaton North, Benoit was pleased with his team’s overall performance.

  • Jacobs blows past Grant to set up semifinal vs. Larkin Dec 23, 2014 10:54 PM
Jacobs senior guard Mike Canady epitomizes his belief that he has never played on a basketball team this unselfish. Canady knew he was on borrowed time as a starter until Northern Michigan-bound Kenton Mack returned from a knee injury. Now Canady is making the most of his time off the bench such as Tuesday night when he scored 11 points to help the Golden Eagles finish 3-0 in pool play with a 69-23 victory over Grant in the Hinkle Holiday Classic in Algonquin.

  • Balanced Jacobs downs Carmel Dec 22, 2014 11:17 PM
Jacobs maintained its offensive balance to overcome a pair of heavily-weighted performances from Carmel on Monday night. Chrishawn Orange’s 16 points led the Golden Eagles as their starting five all hit double figures in an 84-71 second-round victory in their Hinkle Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament game in Algonquin. C.J. Duff and Shareif Bailey finished with 26 and 25 points respectively for Carmel.

  • Jacobs outlasts Bartlett in OT Dec 20, 2014 10:55 PM
After Bartlett’s Jordan Anderson hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 55 and it to overtime, it seemed like the Hawks would have the momentum going into the extra session. Jacobs made sure that didn’t happen. The Golden Eagles outscored the Hawks 16-9 in OT to pull off an exhilarating 71-64 win in first round action of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs Saturday night.

  • Bartlett-Jacobs matchup highlights tournament openers Dec 18, 2014 11:31 PM
Every pool-play game matters for boys basketball squads hoping to advance at the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs, which makes Saturday’s opening-night showdown between red-hot Bartlett and the host Golden Eagles critical to the title hopes of each.

  • Jacobs’ Van Vlierbergen reflects on her amazing Heisman weekend Dec 19, 2014 6:16 PM
Lauren Van Vlierbergen was back in her comfort zone this week at Jacobs High School in Algonquin. But last weekend is not one Van Vlierbergen or her family will forget anytime soon. It was one of those weekends that will live in the archives forever. Maybe not a life-changing experience but most certainly a weekend that proves being a well-rounded student-athlete can pay off in a big way.

  • Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown loaded again Dec 17, 2014 8:42 PM
Five teams who are currently undefeated highlight the field for the 32nd Charger Classic Christmas girls basketball tournament at Dundee-Crown, which kicks off on Friday, Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. Prospect, Hononegah, Stevenson, Burlington Central and New Trier have yet to lose this season. Defending champion New Trier and runner-up Prospect are on opposite ends of the bracket, while Burlington Central would meet New Trier in the quarterfinals if the Rockets get past Bartlett in the first round and New Trier defeats the host Chargers.

  • Fab four smashes relay record in Meadows’ victory Dec 13, 2014 8:36 PM
The record-board rearranging continued for Rolling Meadows’ boys swimming team on Saturday. Probably the most important change didn’t have anything to do with time, but rather final placement. Never before in coach Monika Chiappetta’s 17 years had the Mustangs taken top team honors in the Wild Stallion Jamboree. But there was Rolling Meadows, 3 points ahead of defending Mid-Suburban East champ Prospect on Saturday, and well ahead of strong teams from Hersey, Cary-Grove and Lane Tech.

  • Crystal Lake South tops Jacobs Dec 13, 2014 8:12 PM
The Crystal Lake South machine operates on more than one engine. Yes, junior Chanel Fanter is the main cog in the machinery. But the Gators have many functioning components that are needed to produce victories. With Fanter struggling, connecting on only 3-of-12 shots in scoring 10 points, seniors Gaby DeJesus and Kianna Clark picked up the slack. DeJesus scored 10 points with 5 assists while Clark contributed 9 points and snared 12 rebounds as the Gators topped Jacobs 40-33 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball action in Algonquin Saturday.

  • Jacobs dumps Barrington on Mack’s 3 at buzzer Dec 13, 2014 11:46 PM
Welcome back, Kenton Mack. Playing only his second game of the season on Saturday following a minor procedure to fix the meniscus in his right knee, the Northern Michigan-bound senior drained a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Golden Eagles to a 51-48 nonconference victory over visiting Barrington.
