  • Huntley has big first day at Barrington Feb 14, 2015 12:18 AM
It was a very good day for Huntley’s wrestling team Friday in Barrington. After finishing far off the pace of Fox Valley Conference rival Jacobs at the Rockford East regional last weekend the Red Raiders produced a near-perfect effort on Friday to send four wrestlers into Saturday’s semifinals where one more victory will send the quartet in search of travel plans to Champaign for the state tournament.

  • Big crowds see big efforts from Prospect, Wheeling Feb 14, 2015 12:27 AM
Before a full house for the first day of the Class 3A Barrington wrestling sectional on Friday, Mid-Suburban East and regional champion Prospect along with its division rival Wheeling, took the spotlight. The Knights rode the hot hands of Alex Preissing, Tanner Strobel, Matt Wroblewski and James Ford into Saturday’s semifinals. The middle of the Wheeling lineup supplied support to captain Ricky Muro and freshman Mason Skloot as the Wildcats put four of their own into the front draw for the second round of action. The aforementioned group will compete in the 10:30 semifinals after the first round of wrestlebacks open the proceedings at 9 a.m.

  • Dundee-Crown flies past Jacobs in second half Feb 10, 2015 10:24 PM
Whatever Dundee-Crown girls basketball coach Sarah Miller said to her team at halftime, she should bottle it. Holding a tenuous 17-14 lead against District 300 rival Jacobs at halftime, D-C blitzed the stunned Golden Eagles 31-13 during the final 16 minutes in posting a 48-27 win in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Algonquin Tuesday night.

  • Depth leads Jacobs to first regional title Feb 7, 2015 7:04 PM
Jacobs’ win at the Class 3A Rockford East wrestling regional Saturday was truly a team effort. The Golden Eagles had just one individual champion — Cody Ferencz at 120 pounds — but qualified nine wrestlers for sectionals while defeating local favorites Harlem and Hononegah for the team title. Jacobs, in winning the program’s first regional title, tallied 171 ½ points to edge the Huskies (160 ½). Hononegah took third with 157 points.

  • Jacobs passes the test at Bradley Center Feb 7, 2015 11:24 PM
Remember that scene in Risky Business when Tom Cruise’s character dreams he arrives late for the big exam with only minutes left to take the test? Saturday was like that in reverse for Jacobs boys basketball team but with a better outcome. Jacobs star guard Chrishawn Orange and sixth man Mike Canady were among three Golden Eagles who missed the first half of Saturday’s nonconference game against Libertyville at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee due to ACT testing at separate locations back in McHenry County. Though their teammates certainly would have rather had Orange and Canady available from the start, the Golden Eagles met their planned absence with a general shrug. Jacobs (17-5) sank 11 3-pointers, 6 of them in the first half, to cruise to a 62-34 nonconference win.

  • Lee, Barrington persevere to win regional Feb 4, 2015 11:01 PM
Barrington senior Jessica Lee has certainly had her share of injuries and illnesses during her four years. A left elbow injury interupted her freshman season. Her sophomore season ended with a torn ACL, and mono slowed her junior season. This year, she has grinded through a torn meniscus that she will require surgery on after the season. But Lee was able to erase four years of frustration on Wednesday night at the Barrington girls gymnastics regional, combining with junior Abby Hasanov to lead the host Fillies to the regional title with an impressive 146.125.

  • Jacobs overcomes McHenry Feb 3, 2015 10:50 PM
While the tests keep mounting for the Jacobs boys basketball team, the Golden Eagles are showing they can answer just about anything you throw at them. Last week it was depth. Tuesday it was all mental and in its 53-38 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win over McHenry at the Eagles Nest in Algonquin, Jacobs (16-5, 6-0) not only shook off the rust of 6 days in between games, but the lack of practice time due to Monday’s weather cancellations.
