  • Peltier, Jacobs return to sectional final Jun 4, 2014 11:29 PM
Jacobs pitcher Reilly Peltier was effectively wild early. Then he was just plain effective. Peltier beaned the first two Hononegah hitters he faced in a Class 4A McHenry sectional at Petersen Park Wednesday, but he quickly snuffed out that threat by striking out the next three hitters he faced, foreshadowing the rest of his 10-strikeout, 1-hit performance in a 7-1 victory.

  • Burlington Central 3rd in Class 2A May 31, 2014 10:04 PM
During the more than three-hour bus ride to Eastern Illinois University, the members of the Burlington Central track team knew that winning at a trophy at the Class 2A state track and field championships this weekend at O’Brien Field was more than possible. That is, if the Rockets did what they were capable of. The formula was simple. Watch junior Lucas Ege run real fast in his hurdles races and in the two relays and let the chips fall where they may. Of course, Ege had plenty of help too. SIU-Edwardsville-bound senior Matt O’Connor would place second in the 800-meter run to add 8 very valuable points. But even with all of that, it would take a fantastic performance from Ege, O’Connor, Casey Matthews and Kyle Neubauer in the 1,600-meter relay to end the meet to give the Rockets the final push in points they would need.

  • Burlington Central in Class 2A trophy position May 30, 2014 8:32 PM
As coach Mike Schmidt was hoping, the Burlington Central Rockets boys track and field team put itself in prime position for big things in the team race Saturday at the IHSA state meet at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field. Junior Lucas Ege is seeded second in the 300 hurdles and 110 high hurdles after a relatively stress-free qualifying session.

  • Burlington Central’s sites set on trophy May 29, 2014 9:40 PM
The Burlington Central boys track team is doing some medal prospecting this weekend. The Rockets feel they have a chance to be in the hunt for the third-place trophy at the Class 2A state finals at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

  • Norasith, Hougland surviving in the backdraw May 29, 2014 9:09 PM
South Elgin’s Andre Norasith and Hampshire’s Elisha Hougland provided a lession in resiliency on Thursday. Both fired back with three consecutive victories after opening-round losses on the first day of the boys tennis state tournament to earn a second day of competition.

  • Then, and now, Jacobs’ Peltier beats Cary-Grove May 29, 2014 10:08 PM
Jacobs right-hander Reilly Peltier followed a plan hatched 362 miles away to limit Cary-Grove to 2 hits in Thursday’s 3-1 playoff victory in Crystal Lake. The hard-throwing senior was facing the Trojans for the second time this season. The first meeting took place on March 26 in downstate Marion during the teams’ respective spring break trips. Peltier wasn’t at full strength with his fastball in that first start of the season, but he still managed to hold the Trojans to 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 in 6 innings of a 7-6 win.

  • Dolezal, Barrington blank Jacobs May 28, 2014 8:48 PM
Kelsey Peters was good. Keenan Dolezal was better. Dolezal, who allowed only a single to Emily Borg in the second inning, tossed a 1-hit shut out as top-seeded Barrington defeated No. 4 seed Jacobs 3-0 in semifinal action of the Class 4A Cary-Grove softball regional Wednesday afternoon.

  • Jacobs moves on, will face Barrington next May 26, 2014 10:28 PM
They waited — 93 minutes to be exact — but in the end, it had rained too much to make Jacobs’ softball field playable for the top of the seventh inning. Considering all the games the Golden Eagles had lost in the seventh inning this season, maybe there was some poetic justice to that. The Eagles registered a 3-1 victory Monday over Crystal Lake Central in the play in game of the Class 4A Cary-Grove regional.

  • Jacobs’ Van Vlierbergen state 800 champ May 24, 2014 8:33 PM
Jacobs junior Lauren Van Vlierbergen has been eyeing a state title in the 800 meters since the beginning of the season. And on a sun-splashed day at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium she delivered. Van Vlierbergen shot out of the start leaving the field in her wake. She hit the first lap in 61 seconds, cruising to the Class 3A 800 title in an impressive 2:10.14 and becoming the first Jacobs individual to win a girls state track title.

  • Crystal Lake South’s Lenzini runs to 800 win May 24, 2014 12:18 AM
