More Muslim candidates are running for elected office in the suburbs and a group called Project Mobilize is helping with training, networking, fundraising and resources to reach target demographics. "We wanted to be the vehicle to help those individuals gain leadership skills," group co-founder Reema Ahmad said. Running for office "gives friends and neighbors, and the public an opportunity to see American Muslims in the community in a light that they wouldn't otherwise be seen in from the media," said Junaid Afeef, who is running for Hoffman Estates Park Board.

Hanover Twp. to offer free disaster training Dec 13, 2012 12:00 AM
The Hanover Township Department of Emergency Services will offer free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays Feb. 5 through April 2. The classes will take place at the township's Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett. The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.

Hanover Township doesn’t raise 2013 property tax levy Dec 11, 2012 12:00 AM
The Hanover Township board of trustees unanimously approved the 2013 property tax levy with no increase, marking the second consecutive year officials held the line. The total township levy is $5.9 million, while the road district levy is about $1.6 million, half of which goes to municipalities within the township.

U-46 teacher gets special recognition from Chicago Bears Oct 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Gloria Helin goes the extra mile to make sure students in her fourth-grade dual language class at Channing Elementary School have everything they need to learn. She often iis the first one at school in the morning and one of the last ones to leave. And she often buys supplies out of her own pocket. Tonight, Helin is expected to be among 16 teachers from across Illinois to be recognized as Heroes in the Classroom at the NFL game between the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions.
