Sycamore beats Hampshire in bottom of 7th May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
It was appropriate that Hampshire's regional semifinal softball game against Sycamore came down to the last pitch Monday. The Whip-Purs and Spartans had battled back and forth for six innings before two dramatic turns in the seventh decided it. Hampshire rallied for 4 runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 8-7, only to watch the host Spartans score the winning run with two outs in the bottom half. Taylor Jones' single drove in the 2 runs to give No. 4 seed Sycamore the walk off 9-8 victory and a semifinal matchup against top-seeded Burlington Central today at 4:30 p.m.

Huntley’s Tseumah state high jump champ May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Omo Tseumah took a calculated gamble. But it paid off handsomely for the Huntley senior in her return engagement with Lyons Township sophomore Emma Haugen. Last year at the girls Class 3A state track and field meet, Haugen defeated Tseumah for the championship in the high jump. Tseumah made a bold move as the two dueled once again on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University. "I decided to skip 5-(feet)-5," Tseumah said. The Marquette-bound senior then made her three following heights at 5-6, 5-7 and 5-8.

Jacobs 3,200 relay team Friday’s fastest May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
The Jacobs 3,200-meter relay team made quite a statement Friday at the Class 3A state girls track and field finals in Charleston. The quartet of Molly Barnes, Tori Tamburrino, Sam Baran and Lauren VanVlierbergen won its heat and clocked the fastest time of all 3A teams at 9:16.19. The Golden Eagles will take a shot at school history in today's finals. No Jacobs girls individual or relay team has won a track state title. LaShawna Canty came the closest taking second in the high jump in 1998 and 1999.

Burlington Central’s Trupp seeking more May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Burlington Central senior Katie Trupp is no stranger to the girls track and field state finals podium. As a freshman she took fifth in the state in high jump and followed that up with a pair of medals sophomore year in the pole vault (sixth) and high jump (seventh). Trupp will look to make it a 3-peat at this weekend's Class 2A state finals at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium in Charleston. Class 1A preliminaries start today, while Class 2A and 3A action gets under way Friday.

Burlington C. breaks loose on Senior Day May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
It took a few innings for the Burlington Central softball team to get its bats going on Senior Day Wednesday, but when the Rockets did it was another hit parade. Held to a run on 2 hits in the first three innings by Hampshire senior Jennifer Hurst. Central broke out and scored 7 runs on 11 hits in its final three at-bats for an 8-1 nonconference win. "It was just the excitement of Senior Day and everyone being all giddy," smiled BC senior second baseman Lauren King, who was recognized with classmates Melanie Gajewski, Rebecca Roscher and Mackenzie Paschke.

Improbable comeback for Burlington Central May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
With 20 minutes to go in the semifinal of the Class 2A Sycamore girls soccer regional semifinal Tuesday, few in the stands were thinking overtime. No one but the most ardent Burlington Central fans was planning a Rockets' victory celebration. Hampshire led 3-0 and was seemingly able to run out the clock. But by the end of overtime, it was indeed the Rockets who were celebrating. Alyssa Messina scored the tying goal with 1:11 left in regulation, then scored the eventual game-winner halfway through the first overtime as the Rockets completed the improbable comeback for a 4-3 victory.

Hampshire HS senior hopes to make a career out of film May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
When Danny Heck was in eighth grade, he and his friends made an Indiana Jones movie with a camcorder. He had such a good time it prompted some research into the film industry and how one could go about breaking into it. Heck, now a senior at Hampshire High School, has worked with Nicole Thompson, the high school librarian, and the District 300 Foundation over the last year on videos for school and district events. "That's when I really knew that this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life," Heck said.
