    Five teams who are currently undefeated highlight the field for the 32nd Charger Classic Christmas girls basketball tournament at Dundee-Crown, which kicks off on Friday, Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. Prospect, Hononegah, Stevenson, Burlington Central and New Trier have yet to lose this season. Defending champion New Trier and runner-up Prospect are on opposite ends of the bracket, while Burlington Central would meet New Trier in the quarterfinals if the Rockets get past Bartlett in the first round and New Trier defeats the host Chargers.

    Hampshire opened Fox Valley Conference Fox Division boys basketball play in style Tuesday, blowing out undermanned Crystal Lake Central, 90-49, before a festive home crowd. Already leading by double digits at halftime, the Whip-Purs blew the game wide open with an awesome third-quarter shooting display. Hampshire made 11 of 16 shots while outscoring the Tigers 26-10.

  • Hampshire still unbeaten in FVC Fox Dec 12, 2014 11:18 PM
    In the first half against Woodstock North, Hampshire’s girls basketball team just couldn’t seem to pass the ball down low. Any pass in the direction of the baseline was met by a tangle of long arms belonging to the Thunder. The Whip-Purs committed 15 turnovers in the first half, most coming on steals, but still managed to lead by a point at the break. In the second half, the Whips eliminated those turnovers and pulled away to a relatively easy 40-26 win Friday in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division action in Woodstock.

Whether or not the Maroons have improved enough to halt rival Larkin, which has beaten them six straight, will be determined when the rivals meet at Larkin on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

    The turkey having settled, it’s time to move to step two of the girls basketball season, which kicks off in earnest this week as conference play around the Fox Valley area begins. But on Saturday, conference wars take a break for the second annual Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin. Three top-notch boys games will be played and one very marquee girls game, at 3:15 p.m., will pit defending Class 3A state champion Montini against defending Class 4A state champion Whitney Young of Chicago. Young is coached by 1992 Larkin graduate Corry (Carter) Irvin, the brother of Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter.

    Rockford Jefferson was looking to make amends. Unfortunately for the Hampshire boys basketball team, the J-Hawks’ source of redemption came at he Whip-Purs’ expense in the championship game of the Leland Strombom Thanksgiving Tournament at Sycamore on Saturday night. The Jefferson formidable one-two punch of forward Montel Brown and guard ML Moore accounted for 76 percent of the J-Hawks’ offense in their 67-56 victory.

Filling the stat sheet with 26 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 3 assists, Benoit’s effort propelled the Whip-Purs to a 47-45 win over Hoffman Estates in fourth round action of the Second Annual Hoffman Estates Girls Basketball Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday night.
