Mundelein happy to join state trophy hunt May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
The 62nd annual boys gymnastics state meet is shaping up to be a close one when the two-day competition gets under way Friday at Lincoln-Way East. The Elite Eight team tournament along with the all-around championship begins at 6 p.m. with defending state champion Wheaton co-op looking like a heavy favorite to win the title again after posting a sectional-high score of 161.000. On Saturday, the preliminary round for the state individual championship begins at noon with the finals taking place at 7 p.m. using the standard two events at a time format. After Wheaton co-op, Mid-Suburban League entry Conant appears to be the front-runner for the second place trophy as the Cougars scored 154.6 at their own sectional meet. If Conant falters, it should be very interesting to see if sectional champions Mundelein or Downers Grove North can step up and topple the Cougars.

Elgin’s Merena, Dundee-Crown’s Hudson ready for state May 9, 2013 12:00 AM

Merena and Dundee-Crown freshman Satchel Hudson are part of the same gymnastics club and are coached by Merena's dad, Steve, Sr. Merena noted he's known Hudson for nearly a decade. Because Elgin and D-C do not have boys gymnastics programs, Merena and Hudson compete as individuals, representing the schools in the IHSA state series.

Conant’s Mauk makes his mark: record 9.9 on parallel bars May 4, 2013 12:00 AM
After the Conant boys gymnastics sectional Saturday in Hoffman Estates, Conant’s Joey Mauk was encouraged by his teammates, family and friends to climb on top of the parallel bars. Mauk sheepishly complied and then stood with each foot on a bar, with his arms crossed, looking like royalty. Mauk had all the reason to look like a king after conquering the parallel bars earlier with a state-record 9.90. Mauk’s score helped Conant win the sectional with a 154.60 to earn the team’s first trip to state finals in three years. The Cougars will compete for the state title with seven other teams next Friday at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort.
