    Hong Un Jong of North Korea won the vault event on Saturday, denying Simone Biles of the United States a third gold medal at the gymnastics world championships. Hong received 15.599 points to secure North Korea’s first medal at the meet. Biles, who won her second all-around title on Friday and also won gold from the team event, took silver with 15.554 points. Mykayla Skinner of the United States was third with 15.366 points.

    After bringing home the second-place trophy from the Elite Eight meet the previous day, Stevenson put the finishing touches on a great weekend Saturday night at the 63rd boys gymnastics state meet at Hinsdale Central. With a great preliminary round on Saturday afternoon, Stevenson was able to get four gymnasts into the individual state finals, including three top-five medal winners.

    Elgin senior Steve Merena closed out his boys gymnastics career on a high note as he reached the state finals on parallel bars, high bar, vault, and pommel horse on Saturday night at Hinsdale Central. Merena tied for second on parallel bars with an outstanding 9.25 routine while placing sixth on high bar with an 8.6. He added a ninth-place 8.3 on pommel horse and a 12th-place 8.55 on vault.

    Ben Szot wasn’t on the Wheaton co-op boys gymnastics team last year. David MacDonald was in a hospital less than a month ago. Austin Peabody had never done gymnastics four years ago. All that mattered was that the three of them were at Hinsdale Central on Friday night along with their teammates for the IHSA boys gymnastics team and all-around championships. Behind MacDonald winning his second straight all-around title with a 56.1, and fellow senior Ethan Sansone placing second with a 54.2, Wheaton co-op became the first team since Stevenson (2002-04) to win three consecutive state championships.

    Ranked fourth heading into the 63rd boys gymnastics state meet, Stevenson was going to be hard-pressed to capture one of the top three trophies Friday night at the Elite Eight meet. But the Patriots beat the odds — barely. Stevenson was able to edge Lyons Township 153.7 to 153.65 for runner-up honors in a pressure-packed meet that came down to the final few routines at Hinsdale Central. Wheaton Warrenville co-op was truly the class of the field as the Tigers rolled to their third straight state championship with 161.55 points.

    Elgin senior boys’ gymnast Steve Merena will finish up the season this weekend in the exact same location as the previous three years. Merena will compete in the IHSA boys’ gymnastics state finals for a fourth year in a row this weekend. This year’s meet occurs Friday and Saturday at Hinsdale Central. The team and all-around championship will be decided Friday, while the individual events take place Saturday starting at noon.

  • Libertyville leaps into the spotlight May 10, 2014 6:25 PM
    The Libertyville boys gymnastics team has been pining away in the shadows of rival teams Stevenson and Mundelein for the better part of the spring. But Saturday afternoon at the Mundelein sectional, the Wildcats stepped to the forefront with their best meet of the season to take first place with a season-high 147.2 points to advance to the Elite Eight meet next Friday at Hinsdale Central. It will be Libertyville’s first trip to the state meet as a team since 2007, and senior all-around champion Alex Pong was a huge key to the Cats’ success Saturday with a first-place 9.02 average (54.1 points).

    It may not have gone exactly as scripted, but it was a still a pretty good meet for Stevenson on Thursday night as the Patriots hosted their own IHSA boys gymnastics sectional. Stevenson earned the second of five automatic berths to the Elite Eight meet next Friday at Hinsdale Central as the Patriots rolled to the championship of the nine-team sectional with 153.6 points.

  • Wheaton answers all questions May 7, 2014 11:18 PM
    There really was only one question looming before Wednesday’s Wheaton Warrenville South sectional: “Would David MacDonald be back?” The standout senior, who was injured in the same gym during the Donaldson Invite on April 19, looked like his old self as the two-time defending state champions rolled to a convincing victory, easily defeating runner-up Naperville Central, 158.1 to 141.8.
