2011-2012 Lake County Academic Team May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
For the 2011-12 Lake County Academic Team, high school was just the beginning, of what they hope will be lives of discovery, success, and service. "When I was in fourth grade, my uncle died from cancer," relates Jonathan Kersky, a team member from Stevenson High School. "It was at that early age that I decided I wanted to be an oncologist."

Stevenson’s Bush blossoms in big win over Bloom May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Boys tennis coaches at state meets get to sit and coach courtside for the big matches, beginning with the quarterfinals. Assistant coach Jeff Zanchelli performed the duty for Stevenson at Friday's singles quarterfinal between Patriots junior Jeremy Bush and Hinsdale Central senior Sam Bloom at Hersey. Bush, seeded 5-8, thumped second-seeded Bloom 6-3, 6-1 in toasty Arlington Heights. The expression Bush wore while warming up for the match was identical to the one he sported during match point: placid. "I heard him breathing on (court) changeovers," said Zanchelli. "Even that was calm. Jeremy was so composed from the beginning of the match until the end, and he played with so much belief in himself." Mark Linnenberger, another Patriots assistant, also marveled at Bush's burning desire to remain cool. "Not once did Jeremy show a negative emotion in that match," Linnenberger said. "Not after missing a shot he should've made or after Sam hit a winner on a big point. Jeremy was in control and it showed — for the entire match. "That win," he added, "has to be one of the biggest wins in program history."

Grayslake North turns away Central May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
The third battle between the Grayslake softball teams came on Tuesday in Antioch. A total of 25 players reached base in this Class 3A regional opener. But only three of them scored. It was tense most of the way. Grayslake North (24-8) rode the 5-hit pitching of Kristi Gandy and held off a stubborn Central squad 2-1. Grayslake North heads back to Antioch on Saturday morning to meet the winner of rivals Antioch and Lakes at 10 a.m.

Lake Forest ends Grayslake North’s run May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Grayslake North's girls soccer team stood out all season. The pink cleats worn by several players, including Lyz Steinhoff, were just a part of that. "I figured it was my senior year and a little bit of creativity in color would be fun," Steinhoff said. The fun ended for Steinoff, her sister Sara and 10 Grayslake North seniors, in total, Saturday, as the host Knights fell to Lake Forest 2-0 in a Class 2A regional final. Grayslake North completed a special season, which included winning a share of the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division, with a mark of 14-7-1.

That was one Reilly fast sectional at Fremd May 18, 2012 12:00 AM
The bragging rights in the Reilly household will likely switch to current Libertyville senior Shane Reilly. Going back the 1980's, Reilly's father Mike was a distance runner at Libertyville and had put up a best effort of 4:24 in the 1,600-meter run. Friday night at the Class 3A Fremd sectional, Reilly bested his dad with a sensational effort in the 1,600-meter run. Reilly ran fifth in a loaded mile field, but his 4:19.66 time was good enough for a trip to the state finals next weekend at Eastern Illinois University. Reilly now is the best of the Reillys. "I finally beat my dad's time," Reilly said. "I felt really good coming into the final lap and knew I had a good time in me tonight." Reilly's six-second PR was just one of many great efforts at the Fremd sectional. The host Vikings won the meet with 71 points to 68 for runner-up Stevenson.

Growing Batavia program looks like a winner May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Batavia is finding an identity as a boys lacrosse program. Last year, the team was recognized as Aurora Christian/Batavia. This year, dominated by a roster of Batavia students, the team is known as the Batavia Bulldogs. Were still trying to build a program, honestly, Batavia coach Scott Salvati said. We have kids on our team, at least a third of them, who should be playing JV and were trying to play a varsity schedule. Next year well probably have a varsity and JV team, but still I like where were going heading into the playoffs.

Hosford’s hustle helps out Grayslake Central May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
Finally, a teammate tossed sure-handed Grayslake Central center fielder Nick Hosford a bottle of Gatorade. He caught it, naturally, can-of-corn style. From starting Saturday mornings rematch with host Grayslake North by having Kyle LaRoccas first pitch of the game skim his jersey, to scoring from second base on an infield error, to racing to second when Ball 4 skipped to the backstop and couldnt be found by the catcher, the Rams leadoff hitter had himself an excessively busy baseball game. Grayslake Centrals hustling Hosford was on base five times in 5 at-bats, scored 4 runs, walked twice, legged out a groundball for a single and stole two bases. His small ball helped the Rams win big, 12-7, even though the rivalry game was closer than the final scored indicated.
