Voters in 2008 approved a tax hike but a drop in property values meant the expected revenue didn't materialize, according to Fire Chief John Christian. "This is certainly the last thing I wanted to do as a fire chief and our board wanted to do, but it's a necessary thing to continue the services," he said.

The vehicle fire, reported to authorities about 8 p.m. Thursday, didn’t extend to the three-story Savanna Ridge apartments building at 18400 Belvidere Road.

     
  • Grayslake Central student's body found in Third Lake Jul 22, 2014 8:50 AM
    The body of incoming Grayslake Central High School junior Matt Reed was pulled from the water of Third Lake Monday evening, authorities said. Reed had been on a pontoon boat Monday afternoon with six friends when they went into the water for a swim, authorities said, and Reed struggled. Reed was recalled as a "very funny guy" and a "very ferocious competitor."

    A Lake County sheriff's deputy was injured Thursday night after his squad car was rear-ended by another vehicle, authorities said. The accident occurred near Route 83 and Winchester Road in an unincorporated area near Mundelein, according to Lake County Sgt. Sara Balmes.

    The cause of a fire in an abandoned home in unincorporated Lake County near Grayslake is under investigation, fire officials said. The Grayslake Fire Protection District was notified at 10:39 a.m. of the fire near Winchester Road and Highway 83. Upon arrival at the home in the 29000 block of North Ivanhoe Road, firefighters found an abandoned farmhouse with a fire actively burning in the basement.

    A single-family home in Grayslake is uninhabitable after a fire Saturday afternoon destroyed much of the interior. Grayslake Fire Protection District Lt. David Torkilsen said nobody was in the house when the fire started at about 3:17 p.m. on the 33000 block of North Lone Rock.
