    For nearly a decade a Kuzmanic has visited Warren to play basketball for Wheeling in the annual Blue Devil Classic. That impressive run ends this weekend. “Hopefully I’ll come back and watch,” said Deanna Kuzmanic, who next year will be playing for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The sister of former Wheeling stars Stephanie and Kellie and the youngest child, Deanna put on a “Kuzmanic Classic,” so to speak, in Tuesday’s Classic contest against Grayslake Central. Her 24 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots led Wheeling to a 61-38 victory, keeping the Wildcats’ undefeated record in the tournament intact.

    Robby Nardini eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in his career at Vernon Hills, and his milestone performance also helped the Cougars pick up a nonconference victory. Nardini had 9 fourth-quarter points on his way to a game-high 25 as Vernon Hills topped host Grayslake Central 62-50 on Friday. Nardini led a fourth-quarter rally after the Cougars (8-1) let a 12-point third-quarter lead slip away.

    Robby Nardini poured in 21 points, and Cory Levin added 18, as Vernon Hills’ boys basketball team stayed hot with a 64-53 win over visiting Antioch in North Suburban Prairie Division action Saturday night. Both Nardini and Levin sank three 3-pointers in helping the Cougars improve to 6-1 and 3-0 in the NSC Prairie. Matt Weaver contributed 11 points, as Vernon Hills ran its winning streak to four games heading into Wednesday night’s home game against North Chicago.

    It was a great day for area teams and individuals Saturday at the 30th annual Wheeling Memorial Wrestling Tournament. Perennial power Sandburg once again rolled to the championship with 262 points, but the fight for second place went down to the final round between the host Wildcats and Stevenson. Wheeling held a 3.5-point lead over the Patriots at the start of the final round, but the Wildcats pulled away with some great performances to capture runner-up honors over Stevenson, 176 to 161.5.

    Sidney Lovitsch’s sophomore basketball season continues to get better. Grayslake North’s 5-foot-7 guard scored a career-high 26 points Thursday night, as the visiting Knights snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating Woodstock 57-46 in a Fox Valley Fox Division contest.

    Sometimes a new coach makes sweeping changes when taking over a program. Kosta Kougias can think of only one major change at Grayslake Central since he took over the boys basketball team for former coach Brian Moe, now the school’s athletic director. “Well, I guess there’s a different look on the sidelines since I’m like 5-foot-8. There’s a huge difference in size,” laughed Kougias, referring to Moe, who is 6-foot-6. “But other than that, I don’t really think there’s been a huge change.”

    Sophia Way scored a game-high 18 points and sank four of Stevenson’s school-record-tying 12 3-pointers, as the host Patriots remained undefeated with a 60-46 win over Warren in North Suburban Lake Division action Tuesday night. Ashley Richardson also made four 3s for Stevenson (8-0, 2-0). Richardson and Taylor Buford sored 13 points apiece, while Janine Fajardo tallied her 9 points on a trio of 3-pointers.
