    One of the players on the best 4-15 volleyball team in the state has a fancy serve. It travels a few inches over the net and that causes trouble for many a team. Her name is Kendall Buchman, and on Tuesday night she gave host Grayslake Central a few scares. The Rams (9-10) rallied from a set one loss to post a 19-25, 25-19, 25-21 victory on rivalry night.

    Girls golf Grayslake d. Dundee-Crown: At Bonnie Dundee, Grayslake’s first-year co-op team carded a 191 in defeating the host Chargers (220). Ireland Dunne and Kim Balling each shot a 44 to lead Grayslake, which also counted Esther Rhie’s 50 and Dhani McDowell’s 53.

    Iven Hernandez scored two more goals, and Antioch’s boys soccer team won again in North Suburban Conference Prairie Division action Tuesday. The Sequoits’ 3-1 victory over visiting Wauconda at McMillen Field improved their record to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the NSC Prairie.

    McKenna Lahr and Megan Behrendt led the way at the net, as Lakes’ girls volleyball team won its own invitational Saturday. Lahr slammed 43 kills, while Behrendt racked up 32 kills, 35 digs, 8 aces and 5 blocks. The Eagles went 5-0 on the day, defeating Ridgewood (25-21, 25-8), Antioch (25-23, 25-9), Grayslake Central (25-21, 25-20), Deerfield (25-15, 25-10) and Grayslake North (25-16, 25-20). Lakes setter Maddie Demo dished 98 assists, while adding 5 aces and 11 kills. The Eagles’ other contributors included Izzy Huntington (12 kills, 22 digs, 5 blocks), Katie Billetdeaux (15 kills, 15 blocks), Kaylee Romeo (11 blocks), Lisa Buehler (23 digs), Morgan Phillips (24 digs) and Kelly Clendening (15 digs). Lahr also had 7 aces, 34 digs, and 6 blocks. Lakes coach Kate Cheek said her girls are “working well together and continuing to show their commitment to the team and to working on their team chemistry. They are always working to get better and to push their skills to the limits.”

    Nikki Tatsuguchi was talking about her goals for the girls tennis season after winning the first singles title in the Grayslake Ram Knight Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Grayslake Central coach Chuck Lawson overheard the discussion and felt the need to interrupt. “State. State,” Lawson said forcefully from a few feet away to his junior. “Keep that at the forefront. She’s good enough to get there.” That’s also the goal for Tatsuguchi’s junior teammate Raquel Ruiz. She won the No. 2 singles title for the second straight year to help the Rams repeat as champions of the eight-team invite with 29 points.

    For the second time in three days, Grayslake Central’s boys golf team pulled out a close decision. Kyle Reynolds and Josh Schneider each fired a 42, and the Rams carded a 172 for a three-stroke win over Cary-Grove at Stonewall Orchard Golf Club on Thursday. Michael Murdy and Tommy Triggs added a 43 and 45, respectively, for Grayslake Central. On Tuesday at Stonewall Orchard, the Rams’ 167 bettered Huntley by one shot. Reynolds had a 40, while the winners also counted Cooper Brunk’s 41 and 43s by freshman Michael Sisk and Triggs. Mundelein d. Zion-Benton: At Steeple Chase, Ryan Magee fired a 1-under-par 35 for the host Mustangs (153), who won the North Suburban Lake match by 29 strokes. John Lentz (38) and Jeff Lee (39) also broke 40 for Mundelein. Brett Parola and Zach Zentz carded matching 41s for the Mustangs. Lake Forest d. Warren: At Bittersweet, Jack Garrity and Quinn Gaughan each shot a 37, as the visiting Scouts (156) downed the Blue Devils (169) in North Suburban Lake action. Jack Hansen’s 39 paced Warren. Lakes d. Grant: At Fox Lake Country Club, the North Suburban Prairie match went to the Eagles (187), who also boasted the medalist thanks to Mike Barry’s 40. Michael Maye shot a 51 for Grant (213).

    Iven Hernandez scored both goals for Antioch’s soccer team, as the Sequoits opened North Suburban Prairie Division play by shutting out North Chicago 2-0 Tuesday. The pair of goals gave the senior forward 10 in Antioch’s first six games. Danny Helgesen and Krystian Streit earned the assists, as Antioch improved to 5-1 overall. Dan Miller and Alex Ruano shared the shutout in goal. Round Lake 2, Grant 0: Freddie Ramirez’s pair of first-half goals held up for the Panthers in the North Suburban Prairie game. Alejandro Sotelo and Vladimir Manriquez picked up assists for the Panthers. Adis Sator made 4 saves in notching the shutout. Grant keeper Nick Heidenthal stopped 14 shots. Warren 4, Zion-Benton 0: Chris Travis had a goal and an assist for the visiting Blue Devils in their North Suburban Lake opener. Warren (5-1-3) also got goals from Ivan Esquivel, Mikey Pliskat and Alex Fratila. Jacob Luka added an assist, while R.J. Hill made 2 saves in earning the shutout. Grayslake Central 1, McHenry 0: The Rams won the Fox Valley Conference crossover in penalty kicks to improved to 7-1. Grayslake North 4, Jacobs 2: The Knights scored twice in each half in earning the Fox Valley Conference crossover win.

    Myra Peterson shot a 41, Surya Vijayasankar added a 42, and Stevenson’s girls golf team edged Vernon Hills at Vernon Hills Golf Course on Thursday. Stevenson’s 177 was three strokes better than Vernon Hills’ total. Vernon Hills’ Faith Jung was the medalist with a 40. Libertyville d. Deerfield: At Deerfield Golf Club, Maggie Piazzi earned medalist honors for the second day in a row, as her 40 led the Wildcats (165), whose 10-stroke win hiked their record to 7-0. Libertyville, which won for the third time in as many days, also counted Jessica Lovinger’s 41 and 42s from Simone Mikaelian and Megan Sturonas. “All six played well,” said Wildcats coach Greg Petersen, also noting the play of Reilly Burnetti (44) and Sara Keefe (46). “They were focused on finishing.” Mundelein d. Highland Park: At Countryside, the Mustangs (189) got a win over the Giants (202). Mundelein’s Megan Wiese and Jennifer Dimitriou shared medalist honors with 45s. Johnsburg d. Grant: Kylie Diana shot a 49 for the Bulldogs in their 195-223 loss.

Led by freshman teammates Melissa Manetsch (fifth) and Avryl Johnson (eighth) Libertyville ran to the championship of the 18-team meet on the 3-mile Lakewood Forest Preserve course 82-91 over runner-up squad Lake Forest. Lakes junior Kortney Schardt was the individual champion in 18:21 as she pulled away from Vernon Hills junior Vivian Overbeck down the final stretch to win by seven seconds.

    Thomas Furlong dove head long — and connected. Antioch’s senior midfielder scored with an off-balance diving header for the game-winning goal Wednesday, lifting the host Sequoits to a 3-2 nonconference win over previously unbeaten Grayslake Central.
