For the 2011-12 Lake County Academic Team, high school was just the beginning, of what they hope will be lives of discovery, success, and service. "When I was in fourth grade, my uncle died from cancer," relates Jonathan Kersky, a team member from Stevenson High School. "It was at that early age that I decided I wanted to be an oncologist."

Lombardino, Grant on track for big finish May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Grant discus standout Brandon Lombardino and the Bulldogs continued their terrific season by qualifying every competitor from the prelims into the boys track state finals. Senior Sean Wells made a statement in the hurdles events, qualifying comfortably in both. The Grand Valley State-bound Wells finished second in his heat in the 110 high hurdles (14.40) but his time was third-best among all competitors. He then took down one more hurdling record by winning his heat in the 300 hurdles in a blazing 38.09.

Warren freshman Brittny Ellis and Lakes' 3,200 relay made quite a splash on a warm day at the girls track and field state meet finals at Eastern Illinois O'Brien Stadium in Charleston. Ellis lived up to her hype by winning the Class 3A state title in the 400 (54.08). The Blue Devils freshman also took sixth in the 200 (24.88) and anchored her team to a ninth-place finish in the 400 relay (48.66). Lakes didn't miss a beat with senior Hannah Wittman, senior Grace Dean, and freshman twins Brittani and Danielle Griesbaum combining to lead the Eagles to their first girls track state title in the Class 2A 3,200 relay (9:24.02)

Carmel senior Megan Paul and Warren freshman Brittny Ellis were in a class by themselves on Friday at the girls track state meet preliminaries at Eastern Illinois' O'Brien Stadium. On a warm day, Paul and Ellis set a sizzling pace. Paul, who has won four state medals in Class 3A, including two individual medals in the 400, took a liking to Class 2A. She has the top preliminary time in the 400 (55.96), and also qualified in the 100 (12.54) and 200 (25.24). Ellis, competing at her first state meet, showed no nerves in taking the top preliminary time in Class 3A in the 400 (54.66). The Blue Devils freshman also qualified in the 200 (24.43) and anchored the 400 relay (47.95) into Saturday finals.

Quick action by 17-year-old Sadie Contreras of Round Lake saved the lives of a mother and her 2-year-old child, when a fire started outside their home Saturday night. The Grant High School junior was watching a basketball game on television with her father about 11 p.m. when she noticed a fire breaking out across the street. She started yelling about a fire, and bam, she ran 100 miles an hour out the door, her father Luis Contreras said. She never thought twice about it. She was going to get the people out of there.

Cary-Grove’s sectional supremacy continues May 10, 2012 12:00 AM
The seniors on the Cary-Grove girls track and field team went out the way they came in four years ago as champions. Buoyed by contributions across the board, the Trojans won the Class 3A Hononegah sectional by a 38-point margin Thursday. They netted 102 points to coast to victory over second-place Crystal Lake Central (64), which was followed by DeKalb (54), Grant (52), Hononegah (49.5) and Huntley (47). It marks the fourth straight season the Trojans have swept the McHenry County, Fox Valley Conference and sectional meet championships.
