It all clicks for Warren’s Hicks Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Flying under the radar last season as teammate Shakhiem Chapman enjoyed most of the spoils on his way to a third-place state finish, Warren’s Danny Hicks had a wonderful year himself in 2012. It’s looking like 2013 might be even better for Hicks after Saturday’s result at the Class 3A Barrington sectional. The senior won his second consecutive sectional title, this one coming at the expense of Libertyville junior Austin Koziol (28-11) in a 5-0 decision to send the star 170-pounder into the state tournament next weekend with a full head of steam.

Zak attack leads to 11th-place medal Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Grant senior Sami Jo Zak practiced day after day over the last few years, harboring a dream of making it to state one day. She ended up carrying the dream farther than she ever imagined possible on Saturday afternoon in the girls bowling state tournament at Cherry Bowl Lanes. Zak wasn’t sure if she was in line to receive one of the top 12 medals, even after throwing a final game of 257. The final announcement that Zak finished 11th place with a 12-game total of 2,554 pins caught her by a total surprise.

Clark, Lakes size up Grant Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
With a full week off between games, the Lakes boys basketball team tried a few new things at practice. One of them worked quite nicely Saturday night against visiting Grant. Direll Clark, a 5-foot-11 guard who is usually seen hitting 3-pointers and jumpers, could have been mistaken for an old-school, back-to-the-basket center with the way he was moving in the paint. He worked out with the other big men in practice this week to see if he could use his football player strength to his advantage as a post player. He was a load in leading Lakes to a 63-54 victory over the Bulldogs, scoring most of his 14 points on strong moves in the paint, complete with plenty of pump fakes and spin moves for good measure.

Dunning’s FT help Grant past Vernon Hills Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Three-pointers were here, there and everywhere at Grant on Friday night. The host Bulldogs hit a total of six 3-pointers while visiting Vernon Hills hit five of its own. At one point in the second quarter, the teams combined to hit four straight shots from long distance, and five overall. Yet, despite the importance that the triples played for both teams, it was a shot that was worth a single solitary point that made the biggest difference of all. Junior forward Steve Dunning hit a free throw with 2.2 seconds remaining in the game to give Grant a 59-58 North Suburban Conference Prairie Division victory and send the home fans into an excited frenzy on senior night.

What a difference a week made for the Grant wrestling team. And while Grant had only six wrestlers battling for first-place medals to nine for Libertyville, the Bulldogs still managed to win the regional championship going away by a 197-176 margin.

Grant shares the wealth Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Proving he’s wiser, Grant guard Mike Burns showed no anger following a missed dunk. He displayed only a sheepish smile. After all, the last time the junior let off some frustration, his actions wound up costing him the first month of the basketball season. He punched a locker at school and broke his right (shooting) hand. “I learned my lesson,” Burns said with a grin. Besides, when Burns missed his one-handed dunk try on a breakaway early in the fourth quarter Friday night, Grant was up 21 points en route to a 65-46 win over visiting Antioch in a North Suburban Conference Prairie Division contest.
