  • Stevenson edges Grant for first NSC title Jan 31, 2015 8:45 PM
A new rivalry was born Saturday in the 60th annual North Suburban Conference wrestling meet. Upstart Stevenson and perennial power Grant went toe to toe the entire weekend at Warren, before the Patriots ultimately won their first NSC championship by the slimmest of margins, 225.5 to 225.0, over the Bulldogs. “I don’t think there has ever been a tournament that defines team effort more than this tournament did for us,” Stevenson coach Shane Cook said. “It took all 14 guys working together. We knew how strong Grant’s guys were at certain weights, and we knew every match mattered.”

A day after clinching the North Suburban Lake Division championship and berth in the NSC title game, Stevenson’s girls basketball team faced Round Lake in a makeup game Saturday. • Stevenson, Grant take the lead in North Suburban meet Jan 30, 2015 10:19 PM
The newest kids on the block took a big step towards their first league championship Friday night at the North Suburban Conference wrestling meet in Gurnee. After winning their first NSC Lake Division title in school history last week, Stevenson got off to a great start in the powerful 14-team tournament hosted by Warren as the Patriots lead 102.5-86 over nine-time NSC champion Grant heading into the final rounds Saturday. The semifinals will take place at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday with the first, third, and fifth-place matches slated for 2:30 p.m.

  • Girls bowling: Another first for NSC champ Lake Zurich Jan 30, 2015 11:01 PM
A couple of seasons ago, Lake Zurich’s girls bowling won a sectional for the first time. The history-minded Bears followed that theme on Friday in claiming the program’s first-ever North Suburban Conference title at Sunset Lanes in Waukegan. The Bears posted the day’s best game of 1,052 and nearly broke 1,000 in a few others. Lake Zurich rolled 5,593 pins in capturing first place over 6 games. Warren was the runner-up at 5,498 and Stevenson took third at 5,431 in the 12-team field.

  • Antioch reaches out, grabs outright Prairie title Jan 30, 2015 11:59 PM
In their postgame speeches about Carly McCameron on senior night, Antioch juniors Kelly Johnson and Alexis Duehr shared with the home crowd what they love about their teammate. Johnson recalled their first day of tryouts two years ago. Duehr noted the 6-foot-1 McCameron’s long arms. “They’re the best,” a smiling McCameron said of Johnson and Duehr. “They’re smarty pants. Both of them.” McCameron and her Antioch teammates continued making memories Friday night. Thanks to a 60-33 win over short-handed Grant, which played without leading scorer Jasmine Sangster (stomach flu), the Sequoits clinched their first outright North Suburban Prairie Division title. Antioch (24-2, 10-0), which shared the crown with Vernon Hills last year, will play in its first NSC championship game when it visits Stevenson on Feb. 11.

  • Lakes taking visual approach to game-readiness Jan 29, 2015 11:12 PM
Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Videos work nicely, too. Instead of just telling all his seniors to play like they’re savoring every last moment of this dwindling basketball season, Lakes coach Chris Snyder decided to show them how others have done so. “We’ve been watching some inspirational movies, like ‘Hoop Dreams,’” Snyder said. “I liked it when we got to the part about William Gates’ last game. I wanted to give our seniors a sense of the season being over and what that feels like and just how you have to play like you’re cherishing every moment, because it will be over soon.”

  • Grant savors victory over Round Lake Jan 23, 2015 11:03 PM
Turning things around is just slightly more satisfying when it happens on your home court. Grant avenged an earlier loss to visiting Round Lake and got its second victory of the season with a 61-43 victory on Friday night in a North Suburban Prairie Division boys basketball game in Fox Lake. Justin Hanlin led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 6 rebounds, Jason Mobley chipped in with 16 and Jason Kaye added 10 points.

  • Grant’s Bailey has to play it safe Jan 22, 2015 10:16 PM
Grant forward Pierre Bailey felt chest pains and a shortness of breath at a recent practice. Pierre's older brother Nate Williams supposedly had something similar to a heart attack when he was in seventh grade, and everyone was worried Pierre could have the same health issue. Over the last two weeks, Bailey has undergone all kinds of tests and they have come back normal. He's hoping to get back on the court soon.

  • Stevenson gets a humbling national-level reminder Jan 22, 2015 9:47 PM
Top-ranked Stevenson is still unbeaten. In Illinois, that is. The only two losses for the state’s best team have come at the hands of top-notch, out-of-state competition, teams that are ranked nationally. Just like the Patriots (16-2). Stevenson’s most-recent loss, and its most lopsided loss of the Jalen Brunson era, was last weekend in the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. The Patriots lost to Findlay College Prep out of Nevada, 84-58. Findlay College Prep is the No. 1-ranked team in the USA Today Top 25 national high school poll.

  • Wagner, Yates break new ground; Stevenson wins team title Jan 17, 2015 11:17 PM
Newcomers Zach Wagner of Wauconda and Danny Yates of Grayslake North are the first boys bowlers from their respective schools to advance in the boys bowling state series after excelling Saturday in the Vernon Hills regional at Brunswick Zone Vernon Hills. Wagner tossed 1,267 over his 6 games and Yates threw an 1,181 as they qualified for the sectional round. The other qualifying individuals included Alec Munro (1,139) and Jacob Stern (1,128) of Vernon Hills and Libertyville’s Spencer Baumruk (1,147). Stevenson has been on a roll all season and extended that them Saturday. The Patriots won the regional with an impressive 6,483, finishing 52 pins ahead of Lake Zurich (6,431).

  • Another long-range display lifts Vernon Hills Jan 16, 2015 11:46 PM
All that was missing were the ball racks. Other than that, it was like a 3-point shooting contest was taking place at Grant on Friday night. Vernon Hills and the host Bulldogs weren’t shy about launching from long range. The two teams combined for 21 total 3-pointers, and Vernon Hills’ 14-7 advantage in made 3-pointers was essentially the difference in the game. The Cougars shot their way out of a 4-point halftime deficit to get a 69-52 North Suburban Conference Prairie Division boys basketball victory over Grant. The 14 3-pointers by Vernon Hills, which improves to 14-2 overall and stays in first place in the Prairie Division at 6-0, is a school record.

  • Grayslake North takes aim against Washington foes Jan 15, 2015 10:47 PM
Although there’s no scientific data as proof, there does seem to be anecdotal evidence that high school basketball in each area of Illinois is styled a bit differently. Just ask the Grayslake North boys basketball team. The Knights are preparing to return to downstate Washington High School this weekend as part of the annual Martin Luther King tournament there that they participated in last year. They are ready for what they weren’t quite ready for last time. “We couldn’t believe the shooting we saw there,” Grayslake North coach Todd Grunloh said. “It’s not like it is up here. Literally any kid who checks into the game down there can shoot from two to three feet outside the 3-point line and with great form."

  • Sangster helps Grant top Round Lake Jan 14, 2015 11:08 PM
