  • Nick Price hasn’t competed on the Champions Tour since last August when he tore a legament in his left elbow. He’ll play in the 54-hole Encompass Championship this week.

Price heads star-studded Encompass field Jun 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Some of Nick Price’s best days in a Hall of Fame career on the PGA Tour came in Chicago, where he won back-to-back Western Opens at Cog Hill in 1993 and 1994. Price, who hasn’t competed on the 50-and-over circuit since last August when he suffered a torn ligament in his left elbow, will make his Champions Tour return comes at North Shore Country Club in Glenview for this week’s Encompass Championship. Eight former Western champions will be in the field for the 54-hole main event begins on Friday after a two-day pro-am team event. Len Ziehm has all the details in this report.

  • Phil Mickelson reacts as his ball hit from a bunker narrowly misses the hole on an eagle-attempt during the final day of the U.S. Open golf tournament on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

    Don't feel sorry for MickelsonJun 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Phil Mickelson has accomplished something more remarkable than winning the U.S. Open: Finishing second six times. He calls Sunday's loss a heartbreak, but again it was self-inflicted. There is no valid explanation for a golfer like Mickelson being good enough to win the U.S. Open but never being good enough on U.S. Open week to do so.

  • Justin Rose, of England, reacts after a putt on the 18th hole during the fourth round of the U.S. Open golf tournament at Merion Golf Club, Sunday, June 16, 2013, in Ardmore, Pa.

Glory for Rose, another disappointment for MickelsonJun 16, 2013 12:00 AM
A steady hand gave Justin Rose the shiny U.S. Open Trophy. A wild ride gave Phil Mickelson yet another silver medal. Rose captured his first major championship on Sunday with remarkable calm and three pure shots on the punishing closing holes at Merion. A par on the 18th hole gave him an even-par 70, and that was good enough to become the first Englishman in 43 years to win America's national championship.

Phil Mickelson leads after 3rd round at U.S. Open Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Phil Mickelson has the lead after three rounds at the U.S. Open. Mickelson shot an even-par 70 Saturday, including three birdies on the back nine, for a 1-under 209 total on the hard-to-read greens at Merion Golf Club.

  • Billy Horschel hit all 18 greens in regulation. Hard to think of a better way to climb to the top of the leaderboard at the U.S. Open. He shot 3-under 67, sufficiently managing the nasty rough and hard-to-read greens to become the clubhouse leader late in the second round Friday at the Merion Golf Club.

Mickelson, Horschel share clubhouse lead at Merion Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Phil Mickelson made his first birdie on his last putt. Billy Horschel never missed a green. It was all they could do to barely break par against Merion, which is turning out to be the real star of this U.S. Open. Nearly half the field did not finish the second round when it was suspended by darkness. Moments after the horn sounded to stop play, Mickelson opted to finish his round and drilled a 20-foot birdie putt for a 2-over 72. That gave him a share of the clubhouse lead with Horschel, who made it as easy as possible by hitting every green in regulation for a 67.

  • Phil Mickelson hits down the first fairway Thursday during the first round of the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

    U.S. Open greens, rain present opening-round challenges Jun 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Clouds gave way to sun, squeegees gave way to putters, and the 13th hole gave way to birdies during the first round of the U.S. Open’s return to Merion Golf Club. Drenching storms caused a 3½-hour delay early Thursday, halting play less than two hours after it began. When the golfers returned to the course, one thing was evident: A 102-yard hole was easy pickings for the world’s best players.

  • Fred Couples has committed to competing in the Champions Tour’s Encompass Championship, June 21-23, at North Shore Country Club in Glenview.

Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia shook hands Monday on the U.S. Open practice range at Merion. It was the first time they have seen each other since Garcia jokingly said at an awards dinner in England that he would have Woods over for dinner during the U.S. Open and “we will serve fried chicken.” Garcia apologized for the racially insensitive remark the next day at a news conference.

  • Golfer Adam Scott, of Australia, speaks at the 2013 U.S. Open golf tournament in Ardmore, Pa., Monday, June 10, 2013.

Adam Scott comes to US Open as a major champion Jun 10, 2013 12:00 AM
Adam Scott can understand why so many people thought he would have a hard time getting over his epic collapse in the British Open. In a decision that reshaped his career, Scott decided two years ago to play a limited schedule and practice smarter so that he would be ready for the biggest events. It's a strategy that's paid off with his Masters win." I've got my first major. And my sights are definitely set on trying to win more,” Scott said.

  • Kohki Idoki displays the trophy after winning the 74th Senior PGA Championship on Sunday in St. Louis.

Japan’s Idoki sneaks up on surprised field May 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Three of the top stars in American golf were in position to win the 74th PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club on Sunday. None did. The first major title of the year on the Champions Tour instead went to Kohki Idoki, a 5-foot-5, 136-pound Japanese golfer whose professional record was as unimpressive as England’s Roger Chapman — who came out of similar oblivion to win both the Senior PGA and U.S. Senior Open last year. Idoki, 51, won two Japan PGA Tour events — in 1990 and 1993 — and took his first win on his country’s Senior Tour last year. Those credentials barely got him into the Senior PGA field for the first time, and his play was too good for perennial contenders Kenny Perry, Jay Haas and Mark O’Meara. All had shortcomings of one sort or another.

  • Kenny Perry tees off on the ninth hole during the second round of the 74th Senior PGA Championship golf tournament at Bellerive Country Club Friday, May 24, 2013, in St. Louis.
