But the person whose opinion mattered most to Jacobs’ players certainly liked the Golden Eagles’ title chances. “Our goal was to win the regional,” Jacobs coach Gary Conrad said. “I just knew these guys had the ability to do it.”

    Prospect’s girls golf team made the long drive south on Saturday to the Centennial Invite in Champaign, where it competed on the University of Illinois Blue Course. The defending Class AA state champs took third place in their final tuneup for Wednesday’s regional at the Glencoe Golf Club. Senior Kacie O’Donnell shot a team-best 78 (fifth place individually) on the par 72 layout as the Knights (345) finished behind Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (336) and Glenbrook North (340).

    After finishing second to Jacobs in last year’s Fox Valley Conference boys golf tournament, Huntley coach Jim Rolando was looking for his team to climb that one step higher in this year’s meet. The Red Raiders got the job done. Led by a 73 from Jake Grabner and a 75 from Trent Craig, Huntley placed first with a score of 312 at Thursday’s FVC meet hosted by McHenry and held at Oak Grove Golf Course.

    Nick Carlson shot an even par 71 to tie for medalist honors with Carmel Catholic’s Riley Ley in the East Suburban Catholic Conference boys golf tournament on Thursday. In a sudden death playoff, Carlson earned the league title by getting a birdie on the first hole at Old Oak Country Club in Homer Glen.
