Oakton Community College students will join in the "One Billion Rising" global campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and girls this Valentine's Day. The college's Women's and Gender Studies Program is joining organizations from more than 160 countries worldwide to participate in the campaign calling for one billion men and women to raise awareness about violence against women.

Suburbs rise, join billion dancing women to change world Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
On the most romantic day of the year, groups around the suburbs will rise up, speak out and dance as part of a worldwide effort to end violence against women. Says 71-year-old Mary Shesgreen, one of the organizers and a longtime member of Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice: "Dancing feels wonderful. It feels liberating. It feels empowering. It's aesthetically expressive. Dance is a very strong and liberating force."

With the sun rising behind them, a handful of Oakton Community College students huddled around a fire Wednesday morning to keep warm after spending a night out in the cold to experience firsthand what it would be like to be homeless. "The biggest problem for me was the ground was so hard. I had a rough night of sleep last night," said Ryan Alm, 20, of Des Plaines, a junior majoring in sports management.
