They have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society. Glenbards moving ahead with artificial turf fields May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Artificial turf will be installed at football fields at Glenbard South and East this summer, ready for the start of the new school year in August. Those are the two final schools to get new turf since Glenbard High School District 87 started a turf replacement program at Glenbard North in 2009, followed by Memorial Field at Glenbard West in 2010.

Baseball/Scouting DuPage County’s Class 3A/4A sectionals May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Neuqua Valley is scorching hot and could make a run like the one that saw the Wildcats finish third at Class 4A state in 2008. Hinsdale South is a No. 2 seed but hasn't had a lengthy postseason since it made the super sectionals in 2004. In Class 3A Glenbard South is trying to turn a strong end to the regular season into a sectional title at home.

Sometimes it takes a bit of magic in order to win a playoff soccer match. Other times, it takes hard work and determination. Wednesday, it took grittiness on the part of St. Charles East to edge Glenbard North 1-0 in a Class 3A regional semifinal at St. Charles North.

It might not show up in the box score, but a bunt play can make or break a team this time of year. Especially when the games are closer, and the pitching better. Just ask Glenbard North and Naperville North. The No. 1 Panthers squeezed in the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth inning, and a Huskies bunt attempt in the bottom half loomed large in Glenbard Norths 3-1 win on Wednesday in Naperville.

Naperville North's seniors and the rest of their teammates received one more souvenir, a 4-3 victory over visiting Glenbard North that gave them a 20-win season.

Doubles key in Naperville Central’s DVC triumph May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Naperville Central senior first doubles player Matt Mason welcomed the pressure that was on him and his partner Wesley Lo in Mondays final round of the DuPage Valley Conference championship tournament. The makeshift doubles team which had only played together once before this season responded to the situation with a clutch 6-0, 6-0 win in the final to lead the Redhawks to their third straight DVC tennis title, and once again it was rival Naperville North in second just 1 point back.

Hayes pitches, hits Naperville Central to win May 9, 2012 12:00 AM
Keegan Hayes threw her arms in the air in disbelief and smiled toward her dugout as she rounded second base. Nobody was more surprised about her big hit than the Naperville Central sophomore. Hayes hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth inning off Glenbard North ace Lilly Fecho, and she made it stand with some clutch pitching as No. 10 Naperville Central beat the No. 1 Panthers 2-1 in a Wednesday matchup of DuPage Valley Conference leaders.

Lilly Fechos final year at Glenbard North was going to be her best, of that she was determined. And sure enough, many hours of solitary practice have made the Panthers senior into the area's top two-way threat. Committed to Purdue, the left-hander is 18-1 with a 0.95 ERA and 173 strikeouts with just 43 hits allowed in 118 innings. At the plate, shes hitting .438 with 7 homers and 27 RBI.

Freshman phenom Vincent Lin continues to outplay the competition in his rookie year at Schaumburg, but Mid-Suburban League rival Conant ended up earning the team trophy at the Dan Hildebrandt Tennis Invite at host Lake Park on Saturday afternoon. Led by the No. 1 team of Connor Saks and Spencer Fang, the Cougars edged the Saxons 17-15 in the team race. Lake Park had 14 points in a third-place finish at the schools West Campus.

Bloomingdale homes school boundary swap denied May 1, 2012 12:00 AM
