It was too much for the seventh-seeded Panthers, who fell 2-1 late Tuesday after a fierce comeback effort against the host Saxons at Gary Scholz Stadium. The Saxons (8-4-2) next face Lake Park (17-1-4) in a Class 3A regional final at 5 p.m. Friday.

    Junior Devion Hodges certainly is continuing the tradition of great running backs at Glenbard North, but he was especially proud of his defense Friday. Hodges rushed for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns, but it was his hit as a safety that caused a fumble returned 17 yards by teammate Alex Taylor for the winning touchdown in the Panthers’ 27-23 DuPage Valley Conference victory over Wheaton North in Carol Stream.

    Huntley senior Keagan Smith was glad he didn’t feel hamstrung in the final mile of Bartlett’s 13th Annual Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invitational. Smith’s powerful finishing surge helped him break up Lincoln-Way’s top two runners, Tommy Kolacki and Ian Peterson, and put him just 1.5 seconds behind Kolacki at the finish line Saturday morning at Sunrise Park. Smith finished the 3-mile race in 15:39.5. “Lately this season I still haven’t had something like that, and it felt good to have it again,” Smith said of his closing kick. “Usually around mile two my hamstrings go out, but today they never went out and I was feeling good.” Kolacki and Peterson were among four runners in the top seven as Lincoln-Way Central topped Huntley 33-61 for the team title. Fremd took third with 79.

    Jared Brown, Evan DiLeonardi, Mitchell Dorsey, Zach Manibog, Christian Memije, Jordan Moore, Taylor Ortiz, Tyler Robbins and Collin Sheehan all sent shots for St. Charles East in the vicinity of Glenbard North keeper Nathan Challus during the first half of Saturday’s St. Charles East Invite championship at Norris Stadium. Still, the Saints only had a 1-1 tie to show for its aggressive attacking as they headed into halftime.
