    Tom Poulin knows a thing or two about the best softball teams in Illinois, and the St. Charles North coach knew he saw one in the opposite dugout Tuesday afternoon in the Class 4A Bartlett sectional semifinals.

    Glenbard North used good hitting and a strong pitching performance by Cece Dopart to defeat Willowbrook 7-0 and capture the Class 4A Rolling Meadows regional final on Saturday. The Panthers (26-5) will advance to the Bartlett sectional semifinals against St. Charles North on Tuesday.

Best friends and battery mates Cory Wright and Kyle Khoury did the heavy lifting and worked overtime to ensure that became a reality for the North Stars.

    Known for much of the season for its second-half displays, Geneva’s girls soccer team changed its approach for Saturday’s regional title match with Glenbard North at Burgess Field. The Vikings moved forward from the opening whistle and tried to put the Panthers under pressure. The shift in emphasis paid dividends when Courtney Lardas scored in the sixth minute of the match and as Geneva moved toward what ended as a 4-2 victory.

    Marcus Jegede, a key to Lake Park’s shot at an unprecedented fifth straight boys state track championship, got maximum results from minimum effort. He had little choice. At Friday’s Class 3A Lake Park boys sectional in Roselle, Jegede was on a crash diet of one jump per event to save a testy hamstring that had allowed him to long jump at only two meets this spring, and no triple jumps.

    After Naperville Central spent two days swinging stinging bats, the mound didn’t seem like the best place to be on Saturday. Glenbard North pitcher Eric Orze welcomed the challenge. The junior righty gutted out an impressive 8-inning performance to help the visiting Panthers beat Naperville Central 8-4 and salvage the third game of the DuPage Valley Conference series.
