Major repair work to the leaking roof at the Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center is complete, Glen Ellyn Park District officials said Thursday. A system of buckets, tarps and flexible piping that has been in place around the building to control the leaks will be dismantled in the next two or three weeks “once we have complete confidence,” Dave Harris, the park district executive director, said. “We have confidence now, but we’ve been through a lot in the last three years,” he said.

Lake Ellyn showing signs of improvement Jul 18, 2012 12:00 AM
In the middle of this summer's record heat, the water temperature at Lake Ellyn in Glen Ellyn has risen to 90 degrees at times, leading to the growth of more algae and dead fish popping up — not to mention a foul-smelling odor. But thanks to some much needed rain in the meantime, the conditions at the lake have improved, park officials said Wednesday. "I was at the lake and it appears significantly better in most spots," said Dave Harris, the park district's executive director. "The little bit of rain we had assisted that. It caused some movement and cooled off the lake."

Whether boats sink or float, Lake Ellyn Cardboard Regatta will be a spectacle Jun 29, 2012 12:00 AM
When you're competing in a boat race, the obvious goal is making it back ashore safely and, ideally, in first place. But for some sailors in the Lake Ellyn Cardboard Regatta, sinking is not only a goal, it's celebrated. Last year, a group of judges — Glen Ellyn Park District staff members and volunteers — awarded the SS Saturation for the best display of sinking.

Court battle continues over Ackerman roof leaks Jun 14, 2012 12:00 AM
A DuPage County judge on Thursday refused to dismiss a countersuit brought by the Glen Ellyn Park District against a contractor that built the district's recreation center, which has had leaks in its roof since opening in 2010. T.A. Bowman Constructors originally filed suit against the district last summer, arguing that parks officials refused to allow work crews the opportunity to correct the roof leaks at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center. The district followed with a suit of its own soon after. Judge Dorothy French denied Bowman's request to throw out the park district's suit on procedural grounds, which allows the legal dispute to continue.

$1 million fix planned for Glen Ellyn rec center roof Dec 21, 2011 12:00 AM
Give the leaky roof at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center a new, $1 million top layer and seven more months and it should be fixed, Glen Ellyn Park District officials say. The park board this week approved seeking bids for installation of a single-layer insulated membrane to be adhered to the existing, leaky roof. Leaks in the roof of the $11.2 million, 88,000-square-foot facility were discovered before it opened in January 2010.
