    Major repair work to the leaking roof at the Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center is complete, Glen Ellyn Park District officials said Thursday. A system of buckets, tarps and flexible piping that has been in place around the building to control the leaks will be dismantled in the next two or three weeks “once we have complete confidence,” Dave Harris, the park district executive director, said. “We have confidence now, but we’ve been through a lot in the last three years,” he said.

    In the middle of this summer's record heat, the water temperature at Lake Ellyn in Glen Ellyn has risen to 90 degrees at times, leading to the growth of more algae and dead fish popping up — not to mention a foul-smelling odor. But thanks to some much needed rain in the meantime, the conditions at the lake have improved, park officials said Wednesday. "I was at the lake and it appears significantly better in most spots," said Dave Harris, the park district's executive director. "The little bit of rain we had assisted that. It caused some movement and cooled off the lake."

    Increased algae growth, fish kills and 90-degree water temperatures led the Glen Ellyn Park District to cancel a Sunday boating event scheduled to take place on Lake Ellyn. The lake has been growing more algae and experiencing more noticeable fish kills because of the recent heat wave and this summer's drought-like conditions.

    A DuPage County judge on Thursday refused to dismiss a countersuit brought by the Glen Ellyn Park District against a contractor that built the district's recreation center, which has had leaks in its roof since opening in 2010. T.A. Bowman Constructors originally filed suit against the district last summer, arguing that parks officials refused to allow work crews the opportunity to correct the roof leaks at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center. The district followed with a suit of its own soon after. Judge Dorothy French denied Bowman's request to throw out the park district's suit on procedural grounds, which allows the legal dispute to continue.

Leaks in the roof of the $11.2 million, 88,000-square-foot facility were discovered before it opened in January 2010.
