    The 33-12 final score of Burlington Central’s Homecoming win was a bit misleading Friday night on Rocket Hill. Central and Genoa-Kingston went toe-to-toe for 45 minutes before the Rockets scored 2 late touchdowns to pull away.

     
  • Favela, big plays lead St. Edward to win Aug 30, 2014 12:31 AM
    No matter what, St. Edward was bound and determined to win its opening game of the season here on Friday night. Despite a struggling offense that turned the ball over 3 times and generated just 7 first downs the Green Wave managed to pull out a 24-20 nonconference victory over Genoa-Kingston in large part because of big plays from the defense and special teams and one big run by junior Danny Favela.

  • Burlington Central breaks loose late for win Apr 25, 2014 9:17 PM
    After five innings, Burlington Central led Genoa-Kingston 7-6 in a tight Big Northern East baseball matchup Friday in Genoa. Then the Rockets’ offense exploded over the final two innings to turn the game into a rout. Central scored 9 runs on just 4 hits in the sixth and seventh innings to come away with a 16-8 victory.

     
  • Burlington Central ekes out win over Genoa Apr 8, 2014 8:18 PM
    Wade Maisto was getting nervous. Although his Burlington Central softball team was clinging to a 1-0 lead against Genoa-Kingston, the Rockets had left the bases loaded twice and the Central coach figured it would come back to bite them. Maisto didn’t relax much when Cogs’ second baseman Dani Mathey made a diving stop to rob the Rockets of a run in the seventh, or when Cogs’ pitcher Baylie Ullmark led off the bottom half with a double to the base of the fence in straightaway center. But Central pitcher Brooke Gaylord bore down and got out of the inning as the Rockets (4-3, 1-0) held on for the 1-0 win in Big Northern East action in Genoa.

  • Cary-Grove a surprising No. 1 seed Feb 20, 2014 11:34 PM
    Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle and Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts expressed surprise for different reasons when seeds for the upcoming Class 4A Elgin boys basketball sectional were released on the IHSA website Thursday afternoon. Cary-Grove (15-10, 7-4) was named the No. 1 seed at the Crystal Lake Central regional, followed by Fox Valley Conference Valley Division brethren Prairie Ridge (15-10, 6-5), Jacobs (13-12, 7-3), Crystal Lake South (14-10, 3-7) and Dundee-Crown (6-16, 2-8). Crystal Lake Central (3-21, 2-8 FVC Fox) is the No. 6 seed.

     
  • Burlington Central preparing to leave Big Northern Nov 18, 2013 10:57 PM
    Burlington Central intends to leave the Big Northern Conference to join a new league, and the Rockets have company. Under a proposal presented to the District 301 school board by Burlington Central principal Matthew Haug and athletic director Steve Diversey at Monday’s meeting, the school would withdraw from the Big Northern Conference’s East Division following the 2014-15 school year along with Marengo, Harvard and Genoa-Kingston, all original members of the BNC, founded in 1991.

     
  • Burlington Central rolls to regional title Oct 31, 2013 9:46 PM
    If the Burlington Central girls volleyball team ends the season in the same place it did the last time it won a regional championship, the Rockets will be happy campers. Exhibiting dominance from start to finish, Central rolled to a 25-15, 25-14 win over host Genoa-Kingston Thursday nigh to claim the championship of the Class 3A G-K regional. The regional title is the Rockets’ first since they finished second in the Class 3A state finals in 2008. BC (26-11) will take on Lakes at 7 p.m. Tuesday in one semifinal of the Burlington Central sectional. Lakes defeated Grayslake Central 31-29, 25-19 Thursday to win the Lakes regional. Marian Central and Regina Dominican square off in Tuesday’s 6 p.m. semifinal at Rocket Hill.

     
  • Genoa-Kingston denies St. Edward in marathon Oct 29, 2013 10:31 PM
    What if a demolition derby went into overtime? That might be the best way to describe how Genoa-Kingston defeated St. Edward in the semifinals of the Class 3A Genoa-Kingston girls volleyball regional Tuesday night. After dropping the first game, the Cogs ground out a pair of overtime wins for a 14-25, 26-24, 30-28 win. Genoa will face Burlington Central for the regional title at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Rockets downed Hampshire, 25-14, 25-23 in Tuesday’s first match.

     
  • Genoa-Kingston capitalizes on Aurora Central’s mistakes Oct 23, 2013 9:57 PM
    Whatever margin for error there is during the regular season, one mistake in postseason soccer can be all it takes to send a team home. Aurora Central Catholic made two such miscues Wednesday afternoon at the Class 1A Genoa-Kingston sectional semifinals, and those two plays were the difference in the Cogs’ 2-0 victory.

    Genoa-Kingston was happy to finally put a complete game together. Unfortunately for Burlington Central, it came at the Rockets’ expense. The Cogs led 24-0 after one quarter and cruised to a 43-0 win on Homecoming Night in Genoa Friday.

  • Elam's 5 TDs lead St. Edward rout Sep 1, 2013 10:57 AM
    St. Edward senior running back Davontae Elam had good reason to hug each of his linemen after the Green Wave pounced all over Genoa-Kingston 43-21 Saturday night in nonconference action at Greg True Field in Elgin. For starters, on the first play from scrimmage from the Green Wave 20-yard line, Elam went untouched down the left sideline after bursting through a hole for the game's first score. He totaled 213 yards on 11 carries with 5 touchdowns, 4 on the ground and 1 through the air — a 72-yard pass that he tipped to himself in the third quarter on a 1-play drive from quarterback Bryan O'Neill, the only pass he threw in the game.

     
  • Fox Valley football postponements Aug 30, 2013 8:35 PM
    Mother Nature wreaked havoc on season-opening football games all over the suburbs Friday night, including the Fox Valley, where every scheduled game in the region was postponed. Games at Burlington Central, Huntley, Dundee-Crown, St. Edward, Jacobs, Crystal Lake South, Streamwood and McHenry were all postponed and rescheduled for the following times on Saturday. Bartlett at Huntley, 2 p.m. Larkin at McHenry, 6:15 p.m. Barrington at Jacobs, 1:30 p.m. Elgin at Dundee-Crown, 1 p.m. Marian Central at Crystal Lake South, 1 p.m. Genoa-Kingston at St. Edward, 7 p.m. Hampshire at Burlington Central, 7 p.m. Hoffman Estates at Streamwood, 4 p.m.

  • Burlington C. has tough competition in Big Northern East Aug 28, 2013 7:58 PM
    Opportunities abound for the Burlington Central football team. Third-year coach Rich Crabel has plenty of options at his disposal, particularly on offense where he said between 6-10 running backs and receivers, six different tight ends and four different fullbacks could play on any given night. That’s just on offense. Crabel added six to eight defensive linemen and between eight and 10 cornerbacks could see action. Central is coming off a 2012 season where it went 5-4 and 4-2 in Big Northern Conference East Division play. The Rockets were playoff-eligible, but missed on points.

  • Burlington Central routs Genoa-Kingston Dec 1, 2012 8:36 PM
    It took nearly a quarter and a half for the Genoa-Kingston girls basketball team to score its first points, and Burlington Central took full advantage by outscoring the Cogs 67-9 for a Big Northern East victory in Genoa Saturday afternoon. Freshman Samantha Pryor finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds for the Rockets, but indicated that it was a team effort and she was just another member of the team.

     
  • St. Edward ousted by Genoa-Kingston Oct 16, 2012 11:16 PM
    The St. Edward boys soccer team had come too far to roll over against Genoa-Kingston in Tuesday’s Class 1A sectional semifinal. Though the Cogs stunned the Green Wave with 4 straight first-half goals, gritty St. Edward gained some momentum from senior Johnny Shepherd’s marker just 2:55 before intermission. Then came coach Tim Brieger’s halftime speech. “Guys, just give me 40 minutes, everything you have for 40 minutes,” Brieger told his players. “Look me in the eye after the game and say ‘Coach, I’ve got nothing left.’ ” Energized St. Edward seized the aggressor’s role and electrified its fans just 72 seconds into the second half. Sophomore Joe French made a deep run up the left side, deked a defender along the goal line and sent a cross to Carlos Moreno for a tap-in that trimmed the deficit to 4-2. The teams played evenly and spirited for the next 24 minutes. However, with under 15 minutes to play the Cogs notched the first of 3 goals in a five-minute span to pull away for a 7-2 victory.
