  • No. 16 Bartlett shocks top seed Geneva May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Bartlett walked into the baseball postseason very relaxed. As the No. 1 seed, Geneva had all the pressure on it. After taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Bartlett continued to apply that pressure in a semifinal game of the Class 4A Lake Park regional in Roselle Wednesday. Geneva was never able to get the bats going and Bartlett scored both of its runs during innings in which it did not record a hit. St. Charles N. ousts Geneva May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
At the start of Tuesday's Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional semifinal with Geneva, St. Charles North's Kenzie Rose sported a clean, white headband on her forehead. By the end of the match, that headband was more gray than white, and the smudge that she put on that cloth in the ninth minute of play should be autographed by all the North Stars. That mark came as Rose rose to meet Kelly Manski's left wing corner kick. Rose headed the ball into the net, which certainly set the underdogs on their way to an eventual 2-0 victory.

Here we go again. Believe it or not, it has been nearly a year since Kaneland captured the Class 3A state baseball championship with an 11-3 victory over Oak Forest. "Looking back at it, it was a blur," said Knights coach Brian Aversa. "You have to enjoy it while it lasts. Before I knew it, we were playing on a Saturday for the state championship. "It was great." Despite graduating a ton of talent from last year's team, Kaneland finds itself in a similar position heading into this week's postseason tournament — as the top seed in the regional.

Every once in a while, though not very often, a real life sports competition concludes with a Hollywood movie-style ending. You know, the sort where everything happens in the most dramatic way possible at the very end despite the odds being against it. That was the case Monday afternoon at the Upstate Eight Conferences River Division tennis tournament in Batavia, as the Bulldogs rallied to pull off a surprise in the team standings, giving retiring coach Bob Kummer a going-away present he wont ever forget. Ive always coached to win, and I can tell you that championships are the greatest memories you can have as a player or coach, Kummer said.
