    When Allison Cherry stepped onto the Children’s Theatre of Elgin stage in 1992 as a second-grader, she never dreamed that she would one day end up running the show. But 20 years later, Cherry, a 28-year-old teacher at Prairie View Grade School in Burlington, will direct "iSing: Sounds of a New Generation," which will be presented June 21-23 and June 28-30 at the Elgin Community College Arts Center’s Blizzard Theatre.

    Listening is reading. And so are Braille books. That was the message from Karen Odean, director of Voices of Vision Talking Book Center, 127 S. First St., in Geneva. On June 6, Odean detailed the center’s services at the Aurora Noon Lions Club’s semimonthly membership meeting. She said the book center offers more than 100,000 audio books, Braille books and other materials free for local print-impaired readers.

    Laura Rush can’t remember a single year that she hasn’t made it down for at least one day to Geneva’s Swedish Days. “I knew summer was here when Swedish Days started,” Rush recalled from her childhood. She is now in her third year of planning the event, working to bring back the Swedish culture portion of the 64th annual festival, which opens Tuesday, June 18 and runs through Sunday, June 23.

Dillon Maples (0-2) started for the Cougars (29-36) and did not make it out of the first inning. The righty walked four batters, including Mike Garza with the bases loaded.

    Kane Co. warns of rising cost of heroin abuse Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
    The four highest leaders in Kane County's judicial and public safety system (state's attorney, sheriff, chief judge and coroner) put forward a joint warning that heroin is not at an epidemic level in the local area. Not only are prosecutions involving heroin up by 30 percent so far this year, but heroin-related deaths are on pace to triple what was seen just two years ago. The heroin problem will likely become a tax problem as the costs for the felony prosecutions and treatment of addicts in both the jail and youth detention center will rise, officials said.
