  • Geneva tops West Chicago to halt mini skid Oct 7, 2014 9:09 PM
Geneva already was on its way to an Upstate Eight River Division win over West Chicago Tuesday night when senior Kelsey Wicinski stepped to the service line midway through Game 2. With her grandma, aunt, cousin and a good neighbor friend in the stands cheering her on, the Maryland-bound libero added an exclamation point to the straight sets win, firing 3 aces in a 4-point run to open up an 8-point spread on the Vikings’ way to a 25-19, 25-14 victory.

A controversial call resulted in a late penalty kick for St. Charles East during Tuesday’s Upstate Eight Conference game against Geneva at St. Charles North. Jordan Moore was able to convert it with 14:32 remaining in the second half and the Saints escaped with a 2-2 tie.

  • Jacobs claims crown at Geneva regional Oct 7, 2014 9:50 PM
With heavyweight boys golf programs like Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North in the field, Jacobs felt overlooked as a potential favorite to win Tuesday’s Class 3A Geneva regional. But the person whose opinion mattered most to Jacobs’ players certainly liked the Golden Eagles’ title chances. “Our goal was to win the regional,” Jacobs coach Gary Conrad said. “I just knew these guys had the ability to do it.”

  • Team effort lifts Naperville Central Oct 4, 2014 9:37 PM
Naperville Central relied on a true team effort Saturday to win the St. Charles North Invitational at Leroy Oakes in St. Charles. The Redhawks didn't have anyone run in the lead pack and it took awhile before the first Naperville Central runner ran into the chute. But once Geoffrey McCullough came in, taking ninth in 15:35, his teammates followed close behind. That pack running proved the difference for Naperville Central (97 points) finishing ahead of Prairie Ridge (134), Batavia (151), Marmion (156) and Sandburg (171).

  • Cary-Grove’s defense denies Geneva Oct 2, 2014 9:52 PM
Facing a Geneva lineup that features a variety of 6-foot-plus hitters, Cary-Grove’s volleyball team turned defensive Thursday night. Led by Rutgers-bound Brianne Coffey (23 digs) and Karisa Wilczynski (13 digs), along with plenty of help from their teammates, the Trojans (16-5) scored an impressive 27-25, 16-25, 25-22 nonconference victory over the Vikings (16-4) in Geneva.

  • Neuqua Valley, St. Charles East perfect in UEC Oct 1, 2014 7:18 PM
St. Andrews’ reputation for its greens being the last line of defense was on ample display for the twin divisions of the Upstate Eight Conference golf tournament Wednesday. But the speed, vastness and treacherous undulations of the greens did not stop Neuqua Valley and St. Charles East from completing flawless seasons at the boys championships in West Chicago.

  • St. Charles East sweeps Geneva Sep 30, 2014 10:08 PM
Something had to give when Geneva and St. Charles East’s girls volleyball teams put their undefeated Upstate Eight Conference River Division records on the line Tuesday in St. Charles. It ended up being Geneva’s record that gave, and how convincingly the Saints did it had their home gym buzzing long after their straight set win. St. Charles East scored the final six points of Game 1 to win 25-22, then never trailed in a dominating 25-15 victory in Game 2. The win puts St. Charles East (16-5, 4-0) in the River lead by a half game over Geneva (16-3, 4-1). The Saints have two matches left against St. Charles North and Larkin.

  • Halfway home, breaking down playoff possibilities Sep 30, 2014 9:42 AM
It seems like I say this every year about this time — and here I go again. I can’t believe how fast time is flying. Last weekend (at halftime to be precise) marked the official halfway point of the high school football regular season.

Bing Singhsumalee capped her extraordinary four-year regular season at Waubonsie Valley with yet another superlative round of golf Monday afternoon in West Chicago. The Warriors' defending Upstate Eight Conference champion hit all 18 greens in regulation, touring St. Andrews Golf & Country Club in 1-under par on each nine. The resulting 69 by the reigning Class AA state runner-up powered Waubonsie Valley to a 321 total as Kayla McHale and Arushi Singh complemented the championship performance with fifth- and sixth-place scores of 79 and 81.

  • Geneva has its way with Elgin Sep 26, 2014 11:28 PM
Taormina and Temple. Sounds like a headliner magic act in Las Vegas. But it’s simply become a headliner offensive machine for the Geneva Vikings football team. Running back Justin Taormina rushed for 3 touchdowns and wideout Pace Temple caught 3 touchdown passes — all in the first half — to make visiting Elgin disappear rather quickly Friday night and trigger a 56-6 Upstate Eight River blowout.

  • New course, familiar result for talented Geneva Sep 24, 2014 7:58 PM
Several runners commented after Kaneland’s 45th annual Larry Eddington Invitational last Saturday that they preferred the new course at the high school instead of the traditional site at Elburn Woods. One big reason is Elburn Woods is known to be one of the more challenging courses especially because of a hill that tests even the most fit runners. There wasn’t any such elevation to conquer at Kaneland’s new course.

  • Even with 4-0 record, Geneva sees room for improvement Sep 23, 2014 9:53 AM
I have to admit that I have always liked weather. When I was younger, I wanted to be a meteorologist — that is, until I found out how many math and science courses I would have to take in order to become one.
