Dream day for St. Charles East’s Koenen May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Living the dream — that's what Jasper Koenen is doing. The affable junior from St. Charles East opened his second day at the boys tennis state tournament Friday with a stunning defeat of 5-8 seed Conrad Harron (Chicago U-High), then trumped that effort by shocking 3-4 seed Peter Tarwid of Lake Forest in straight sets. That effort put Koenen in today's semifinal against top seed Martin Joyce (Hinsdale Central) in a 9 a.m. breakfast special at host Hersey in Arlington Heights.

St. Charles N. sweeps Geneva to win regional May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Jonathan Orech had no explanation for another one-sided St. Charles North performance. On a senior-laden team, Orech was at a loss to offer evidence for the North Stars' dominance over Geneva Wednesday night in an IHSA boys volleyball regional championship match. "I did not think the spread would be this wide," Orech said after scoring consecutive points to complete the top-seeded North Stars' 25-13, 25-18 straight-sets victory over the Vikings in Geneva. "We were so focused for them the whole match. We never gave (Geneva) a shot."

Geneva doubles up Batavia May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Geneva showed on Saturday in its victory over St. Charles East how potent its girls soccer offense can be at the start of a match. Tuesday against Batavia in the Class 3A Hoffman Estates sectional semifinals, Geneva showed it could not only be devastating early in a match, but that it could sustain the momentum and then hold on over the course of 80 minutes. The Vikings scored twice in the opening 11 minutes, raced to a 4-0 lead over the first 41 minutes and held on for a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs.

Naperville Central claims sectional crown May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
If you were trying to gauge the percentage of bitter and sweet on the Marmion's doubles team of John Graft and Jackson Rettig's bittersweet day at the West Aurora sectional Saturday, think at least 90 percent sweet. Even the bitter part, a loss in the sectional final to Naperville Central's No. 1 seed Wesley Lo and Sid Swamy, wasn't that bad, and it certainly did little to dampen the sweet part of earning a trip to the state tournament.

Youthful St. Charles North searching for consistency May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Perhaps St. Charles North baseball coach Todd Genke should have figured this would be a challenging season when the team's annual trip to downstate Marion was shortened due to a late-March snowstorm. Whatever the case, it definitely has not been business as usual for the North Stars this season.

Batavia repeats UEC River title May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Brad Nelson picked up right where Bob Kummer and Nelson's girls team left off. Nelson guided the Batavia boys tennis team to the Upstate Eight River Division conference championship Saturday in his first season as the boys coach, replacing the longtime boys coach Kummer. "We won the girls one in the fall on these courts (at Elgin) actually. To come back in the spring with the guys is special to keep things going for coach Kummer with what he left us with after winning it last year," Nelson said.
