  • Appeal rejected in Geneva High School dean email threat Jun 20, 2014 5:48 PM
An appellate court has upheld the conviction of a teen accused of threatening a Geneva High School dean in 2011. Daniel Diomedes, 21, who was issued two years of probation and a year of GPS monitoring, unsuccessfully argued that an email he sent was not authenticated at trial and even if it was, his venting about bullying was protected under the First Amendement.

  • Waldoch’s smarts match her skills Jun 12, 2014 1:07 PM
The World Cup started Thursday in Brazil, and if you’re looking for an area girls soccer player who’d been counting the days until the tournament began, you’d want to start with Geneva’s Annie Waldoch. That’s not just an idle factoid either. Poll most rosters and there will be a devoted handful who keep track of the games beyond those they play. But if you want a link to the advanced way in which Waldoch played midfield or defense in her time in the Vikings program, her devotion to the world’s most popular sport would be a good starting point.

  • Rapshus, Lake Park stymie Geneva May 30, 2014 12:03 AM
Lake Park senior pitcher Rhett Rapshus has been the tough-luck kid throughout much of the baseball season. However, the hard-throwing right-hander found himself on the other side of the ledger during Thursday’s Class 4A regional semifinal clash against Geneva. Rapshus (3-6), who will attend Black Hawk College next season, tossed a 2-hit complete game to lift the 12th-seeded Lancers (13-22) to a 4-3 victory over the fifth-seeded Vikings in Roselle.

Friday is Prom Night for Conant High School, and the school’s girls soccer players have had a goal for the evening for some time. “One of our main goals was to go into prom with cleats on, leaving right from the game,” Conant junior Leah Celarek said. The Cougars (14-4-2) earned their right to head to the dance creatively-shod thanks to Wednesday’s 3-1 Class 3A Conant sectional semifinal victory over Geneva.

St. Charles North’s Aaron Amburgey and Grant Spellman approached Saturday’s sectional doubles championship match against Lake Park’s Jack Millikan and Luke Szulczynski unaware of its overall significance. Perhaps that was a good thing. Amburgey and Spellman rallied from a 3-2 second-set deficit to earn a 6-2, 6-3 victory that ultimately propelled the North Stars to their first sectional team tennis title since 2011 at St. Charles East. St. Charles North finished with 22 points while the host Saints had 20.

  • Geneva starts fast, beats Glenbard North May 24, 2014 9:17 PM
Known for much of the season for its second-half displays, Geneva’s girls soccer team changed its approach for Saturday’s regional title match with Glenbard North at Burgess Field. The Vikings moved forward from the opening whistle and tried to put the Panthers under pressure. The shift in emphasis paid dividends when Courtney Lardas scored in the sixth minute of the match and as Geneva moved toward what ended as a 4-2 victory.
