Emma Spagnola nearly etched her name among track and field immortals. Britney Williams could not have envisioned a greater way to end her high school career at St. Charles East. Aurora Christian junior Peyton Wade had a day few could match. The second day of the girls state track and field meet produced local champions in six different events in two separate classes.

Naperville Central claims sectional crown May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
If you were trying to gauge the percentage of bitter and sweet on the Marmion's doubles team of John Graft and Jackson Rettig's bittersweet day at the West Aurora sectional Saturday, think at least 90 percent sweet. Even the bitter part, a loss in the sectional final to Naperville Central's No. 1 seed Wesley Lo and Sid Swamy, wasn't that bad, and it certainly did little to dampen the sweet part of earning a trip to the state tournament.

Youthful St. Charles North searching for consistency May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Perhaps St. Charles North baseball coach Todd Genke should have figured this would be a challenging season when the team's annual trip to downstate Marion was shortened due to a late-March snowstorm. Whatever the case, it definitely has not been business as usual for the North Stars this season.

Batavia repeats UEC River title May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Brad Nelson picked up right where Bob Kummer and Nelson's girls team left off. Nelson guided the Batavia boys tennis team to the Upstate Eight River Division conference championship Saturday in his first season as the boys coach, replacing the longtime boys coach Kummer. "We won the girls one in the fall on these courts (at Elgin) actually. To come back in the spring with the guys is special to keep things going for coach Kummer with what he left us with after winning it last year," Nelson said.

Batavia wins Geneva series, regains River lead May 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Luke Horton and his Batavia teammates had plenty to celebrate following a 13-4 victory at Geneva on Tuesday — and that's just what they did. Horton fired a complete game, running his perfect record to 7-0, while Batavia hit the 20-win mark and won the series over the Vikings. Coupled with St. Charles East's loss to Streamwood on Tuesday, Batavia (20-5, 15-5) now finds itself alone in first place in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division with a pair of three-game series remaining against St. Charles North and Streamwood.

Batavia, Geneva split doubleheaderMay 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Geneva didn’t look at Saturday’s doubleheader at Batavia as a chance to play spoiler, but the Vikings did deliver a blow to the Bulldogs’ bid for an Upstate Eight Conference River title. Tony Landi tossed a complete game in the second game, using pinpoint command in a 0-walk outing to give the Vikings a 6-3 victory after the Bulldogs had won the opener by the same 6-3 score. Batavia (19-5, 13-5) fell a game behind St. Charles East (16-7, 14-4) in the River race while Geneva (14-11, 11-9) gave itself a chance to win the series from Batavia when the teams meet for the rubber match Tuesday in Geneva.

From Friday's initial field events to the final relay, Kaneland kept the pressure on the other squads at the annual Kane County boys track and field meet at Burlington Central to win its second straight title and third in school history. The Knights scored 117 points to outdistance second-place St. Charles North (101) on a chilly, windy night on Rocket Hill, buoyed by two victorious relay teams and strong performances from hurdler Dylan Nauert, thrower Nate Dyer and sprinter Brandon Cottier, among others. West Aurora placed third (82), followed by Geneva (61), Batavia (52.5), Burlington Central (50), Marmion (25.5) and South Elgin (19).

St. Charles North handles Geneva May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Junior Andrea Beal went through her share of ups and downs in the early going of St. Charles North's softball seaosn. Through whatever struggles she endured, Beal said she always knew where to turn for support. "My teammates have been great. Sabrina (Rabin) came up to me before my at-bat and told me it was my turn," Beal said. "I was having trouble at the start of the year adjusting to varsity, the speed of the pitchers, and my teammates have all been very supportive the entire time." Beal was one of several North Stars who had a big game Wednesday in a 12-3 victory over Geneva.
