Marmion sends 7 to state Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Metea Valley wrestling coach Claudio Torres spoke for many of his brethren when sizing up the field of the Class 3A Shepard sectional Saturday evening in Palos Heights. "It’s like a mini-state tournament,” Torres said. “I have seen so many state qualifiers (from past years) get eliminated already. There are ranked wrestlers not getting out (to the individual state tournament this week in Champaign).” Defending team state champion Sandburg was the true measuring stick with 10 qualifiers, and the field included some of the top Catholic schools in the state. Marmion went toe-to-toe with the likes of Marist, St. Rita — its team-sectional dual-meet foe a week from Tuesday at Hinsdale South — and Mt. Carmel to lead the area programs with seven state qualifiers.

  • Geneva honors 1963 state team, Soto Feb 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Geneva High School may be hard-pressed to ever top the Hall of Fame induction it presented Saturday night. • Geneva handles Quincy Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Maybe it was inspiration from honoring the 1963 Geneva High School basketball team that reached the state quarterfinals. Maybe it was inspiration from knowing they had to recover quickly from laying an egg the night before in losing to lowly Streamwood in an Upstate Eight River clash. Maybe it was inspiration in knowing it would be a nice badge of honor to say you beat one of the state’s most storied basketball programs. Whatever the reason, Geneva (16-6) locked down visiting Quincy defensively and made nearly every shot it took from the field and a boatload of free throws Saturday night to notch a 69-55 non-conference victory.

But in the third quarter, Geneva outscored the North Stars 19-9 and that proved to be the difference in Geneva’s 62-55 win. With the victory, combined with Batavia’s 65-40 win over Streamwood, the Vikings (16-10, 10-2) clinched the UEC title outright.

Geneva dominates regional field Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Well, if there were any freshman jitters for Geneva’s McKenna Merges she certainly didn’t allow them to show. Competing in her first state series meet during Friday’s Geneva regional, Merges set the tone for the Vikings, leading off the team in strong fashion on bars, beam and floor.
