  • Nifty finish lifts Grayslake North to regional win Feb 8, 2014 12:00 AM
Grayslake North’s girls bowling team had been in pursuit of a nice, round number all season long — reaching 1,000 in a game as a team. The Knights picked a nice time to attain that goal, bettering the mark by 29 pins in posting 1,029 in their final game on Saturday. It was more than enough for Grayslake North to take home the Round Lake regional championship with a 6-game total of 5,620 at Lakes Bowl in Round Lake. Warren earned the runner-up spot (5,556) as Antioch (5,338) and Zion-Benton (5,008) and Grayslake North all advanced to the Zion-Benton sectional, to be held next Saturday at Sunset Bowl in Waukegan. Sarah Littleton of Grayslake North finished as the top Individual with a 1,266.

Commitment time: Antioch’s Lazarz motors toward Moorhead Feb 6, 2014 12:00 AM
The almost 10-hour car ride to far northwest Minnesota didn’t scare off Tyler Lazarz. “I’m used to driving long distances to go up north,” Lazarz said. “We go to a cabin up in Wisconsin a lot and it’s about five hours away, so I’m fine with the driving.” Even though Lazarz won’t be vacationing at the end of his long drives to Minnesota, he’s in for just as much fun. The Antioch senior will be playing football next fall at Division II Minnesota State Moorhead, and officially announced his plans on Wednesday as part of national signing day for high school football. Around 30 football players in the Daily Herald’s Lake County coverage area joined Lazarz in firming up their plans and inking the necessary paperwork.

Anna Osowski led the way in the opening event for Carmel Catholic’s girls gymnastic team on Tuesday night. Osowski soared through her bar routine making one of her best moves, a “bail,” look easier than expected. She finished the nearly flawless routine and was awarded top honors with a 9.4. “I had a good performance,” said Oswowski of her move on the bars. “If you really stay tight and control your body, it’s pretty easy to do. You just have to stay with it. I have been doing it all season. The routine itself was probably one of my best routines. It was good that the team helped me at the end by cheering me on.” The rest of the Carmel Catholic competitors followed the lead of Osowski for a season-best score of 142.2 in claiming the Deerfield regional championship. Host Deerfield finished second (131.125), Warren was third (124.025) followed by Highland Park (122.575).

Grant comes up big, wins NSC title Feb 1, 2014 12:00 AM
It was a total contrast as Grant’s little guys and Libertyville’s big guys battle for team supremacy Saturday in the 59th Annual North Suburban Conference wrestling meet in Vernon Hills. The Bulldogs held a slim 222 to 220-point lead after the semifinals before they were able to extend that lead to 243 to 226.5 heading into the finals. That’s when Grant’s lower weights took over as the Bulldogs won first-place medals in five of the first six weight classes to build what proved to be an insurmountable advantage over the Wildcats. Libertyville did put together a late comeback with some great results at its higher weights. But it was not enough as Grant captured its ninth NSC crown in 14 years 271-251.5 over the Wildcats, who’d won four of the past five NSC titles. Stevenson (124) placed third while Warren (111.5) was fourth.
