Barrington brings out the best Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Welcome to Barrington, Mid-Suburban League competitors. You were guests one of the finest boys swimming teams in the history of the conference, and more supporting evidence came forth Saturday. The host Broncos finished with 273 points to win the MSL championships in workmanlike fashion. Barrington answered challenges to win all three relays, but beyond that their only victory came from Kyle Ujiye in the 100-yard butterfly (50.46). That oddity is simply due to the overall balance of top-level swimmers in the conference, though. And no one else could come close to matching the completeness of Barrington’s lineup. “With the team we have, our focus this year really has to be on swimming our best at state,” said Barrington senior Jack Strauss, who was second in the 200 free and 100 free and anchored the Broncos’ freestyle relays. “Our goal for this meet was mainly to be consisent with our times across the board, and I think we pretty much did that.”

Prospect aims for outright title; Schaumburg tries to turn back Fremd Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
With two conference games remaining, Mid-Suburban League races are starting to take shape in both divisions. In the East, Elk Grove (11-12, 5-3) visits Prospect (14-9, 7-1) tonight in a rematch of a thrilling contest on Jan. 11 in which the Knights pulled out a 60-59 victory. While Prospect has already clinched a share of the East, a win for the Knights gives them the division outright and assures their spot in the Mid-Suburban title game on Feb. 20. In the West, Schaumburg (14-9, 6-2) hosts Fremd (16-7, 5-3) with the opportunity to lock up a share of their third straight West title. The Saxons won the first meeting in convincing fashion 46-35.

This Fremd victory about pride Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Fremd may have already clinched its fourth straight Mid-Suburban West girls basketball crown, but that didn’t mean the Vikings weren’t interested in Friday’s game at cross-town Palatine. “These girls from both schools have been playing together for a long time,” said Fremd coach Dave Yates. “What does this game mean? Pride.” And that’s what the MSL West champs showed as they recovered from a 7-1 deficit to post a 46-35 victory over a Pirates team that handed them a 37-27 loss in late November.

Legally blind, Palatine teen's vision for life is clearJan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Being legally blind is no reason to sit on the sidelines altogether, Alex Taikwel says. Although becoming a traditional medical doctor, reading his short stories in public and taking the football field with the marching band may not be in the cards, the Palatine teen still volunteers in a hospital, writes and plays instruments. "Sometimes it's frustrating that I face limitations," Alex, a Fremd High School senior, says. "But I've come to terms with it."

Fremd absorbs beam bobbles; Meadows' Johnston excelsJan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Fremd wobbled a bit at the finish, but the Viking were able to keep it together. Fremd cruised through the first two events on the vault (36.475) and bars (36.775) and looked to be headed for an impressive score. The beam (34.825) put a dent in the Vikings’ attack, but they survived four falls in winning a 21st consecutive regional title with 143.525 points at their own gym in Palatine. Lake Park took second with 136.275 points, followed by Rolling Meadows (130.575), and Maine West (115.175). Fremd advances to its own sectional next Monday at 6:30 p.m.
