  • Jacobs, Kirker surprise Cary-Grove May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
It seemed appropriate Katie Kirker's finest moment would come in a regional championship game. Retiring the first 15 batters she faced, Kirker, who has been plagued by injuries her entire high school career, twirled a masterful 1-hit shutout as second-seeded Jacobs upset top-seeded Cary-Grove 1-0 in the Class 4A Huntley regional final Saturday. It is the Golden Eagles' third straight regional title.

  • Katie Kirker

Kirker’s story truly one to admire May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Jacobs softball coach Jeremy Bauer rarely shows emotion on the field. It takes a special moment or performance for Bauer to really open up a little. Golden Eagles' senior Katie Kirker gave her coach, her teammates, her family and Jacobs fans just that Saturday at Huntley, when she 1-hit Cary-Grove to lead the Eagles to a 1-0 regional championship win.

  • Helmich, Grant topple Cary-Grove May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
A nasty collision between Grant's Jared Helmich and Cary-Grove's Matt DiCicco at first base in the top of the seventh inning looked much worse than it actually was. "I tried to avoid the guy," Helmich said. "There was nothing I could do, I was going full speed I just couldn't get away from him." Luckily, both players eventually got up, dusted themselves off and continued on. But it was Helmich who would ultimately forget the pain. How so? He'd pitch the bottom half of the inning with a 2-run lead and close the Trojans out for a 4-2 Class 4A McHenry regional championship win. It's the Bulldogs' first regional win since 2001.

  • Barrington starter Cassidy Kraimer delivers to Prospect during the Fillies’ 2-1 win in 8 innings to capture the regional softball title Saturday.

Krzysko, Fillies survive Prospect in 8 May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Barrington's all-time home run leader Loren Krzysko was 0-for-3 as she led off the bottom of the eighth inning in Saturday's tense Class 4A Rolling Meadows regional softball championship game against Prospect. "I couldn't go 0-for-4," said the junior third baseman. "I knew I had to swing at anything good." Sure enough, Krzysko swung the game into the Fillies' favor when she doubled sharply down the left field line. Moments later, Krzysko advanced to third on catcher Savonnah's Osmanski's single to left and then scored on a wild pitch to Raegan Fingerman, giving the Fillies a 2-1 triumph over the No. 11 seeded Knights (11-26). The No. 4 Fillies (30-7) will now be swinging their bats in their own sectional next Wednesday, facing No. 1 Conant (32-3) in the 4:30 p.m. semifinal.

Barrington claims 4th straight sectional May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Aimee Pierce stood between freshmen Jenna Szczesny and Kelsey Muniez encouraging them in their postgame interviews. But this wasn't a typical situation for a sectional championship team. After all, Muniez had only played on the Barrington varsity team for a month and hadn't scored a goal. Szczesny has been on the Fillies' varsity squad, but it has been the playoffs where she has started to become a constant scoring threat. Each freshman scored goals in Barrington's 2-0 victory over Huntley in the Class 3A Rockford Boylan sectional, giving the Fillies a fourth-straight sectional crown.
