Sugar Grove, Aurora, Kane parks agencies get state grants May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
The Sugar Grove Park District is getting $400,000 from the state toward the development of a park near Harter Middle School, the governor's office announced Monday. The Fox Valley Park District is also getting money for redevelopment of Jericho Lake, and the Kane County Forest Preserve District is receiving a grant for the Brunner Family Forest Preserve.

Not long ago — circa the mid-80s — the western boundaries of Aurora and Montgomery were vast swathes of open space, and not much else. "We needed to do more with the land," Fox Valley Park District trustee J.A. Lippold said at the time, "and make more people-use' of it." Jericho Lake Park will soon join the modern movement with a slate of spectacular improvements to be implemented this summer and fall.

From 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, groups of volunteer planting teams — perhaps you included — will take to the gardens in front of the Eola Community Center and Vaughan Athletic Center to roll up their sleeves and celebrate planting season.

Six years ago, Julio Mercado created the Wolf Pack Junior Running Club, and it's been full-speed ahead ever since. Based at the Vaughan Athletic Center in Aurora, the Wolf Pack offers opportunities for children ages 5 to 18 to get involved in the sport of running and enjoy the benefits. "Through running, I wanted to provide local kids with ways to get active and be involved in something healthy," Mercado said.

Fox Valley parks budget focuses on maintaining 4 years of additionsDec 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Since 2008, the Fox Valley Park District has purchased 112 acres, bridged a gap on the Fox River Trail and made upgrades to Blackberry Farm, Red Oak Nature Center and Stuart Sports Complex, spending all but $5 million of the $44.8 million approved in a 2008 referendum. Now, says Executive Director Nancy McCaul, "The vast majority of our budget is going to be maintaining what we have."

The Polar Express train is welcoming all aboard during the first two weekends in December at Blackberry Farm for its annual Yuletide celebration amid thousands of glittering lights. "There will literally be thousands and thousands of twinkling lights, from the ticket window at the train depot to the trees along the walkways," said facility supervisor Sandy Smith. "It's a holiday spectacle; a true winter wonderland."

The Fox Valley Park District has proclaimed November to be Veterans Recognition Month and will pay its respects with an offer of free admission at its fitness centers and also a complimentary luncheon. Throughout November, veterans may visit any park district fitness facility an unlimited number of times for no charge.

Back in 1989, a memorable event took place in the heart of Aurora as part of a national movement. For several days in May of that year, the Veterans Memorial Moving Wall was stationed at what was then known as Illinois Avenue Island Park. Meant to serve as a traveling tribute to all of our nation's veterans, the wall was visited by more than 150,000 well-wishers.

Details of the upcoming Zombie Invasion 5K Run get more and more intricate each time Fox Valley Park District staff members meet to plan the inaugural race. There will be chaser zombies and stumbler zombies; zombie infestation and decontamination zones; 14 obstacles and a party following the race at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Blackberry Farm in Aurora. "The theme keeps growing as we have meetings," organizer Jaime Ijams said.

The buzz is back as Fox Valley Park District's Bug Fest returns Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Red Oak Nature Center, with insects as the star attraction. The event is free, with no registration required. "Bugs are weird, wild, fascinating and often misunderstood," said Margaret Gazdacka, facility manager at the Red Oak.

With all of its programs and events, the Fox Valley Park District has always provided me opportunities to be active and involved in recreation. It got even better this summer with my internship as the summer marketing assistant. Rather than work, my job here has felt more like an adventure in helping people in our communities enjoy life!

On behalf of the Fox Valley Park District, I'd done numerous press announcements over the last 18 months detailing all the renovations and improvements taking place at this beautiful park. But a recent check-in changed everything and created an even greater sense of appreciation.
