Crystal Lake parks to host Open Water Swim Races

On Saturday, July 11, the Crystal Lake Park District will host the annual Open Water Swim Races. Races consist of 1-mile and 2-mile open water swim course on Crystal Lake. The course begins at Main Beach and follows an out and back straight line. This is a great event if you are training for a future triathlon.

In recognition of National HIV Testing Day, the McHenry County Department of Health will offer free HIV, human immunodeficiency virus, testing by appointment during the week of June 22-26. Regular testing empowers those infected with HIV to learn their status, be linked to lifesaving treatment and care, and prevent the spread of HIV to others.

The proposed final master plan for Fox Bluff Conservation Area will be presented to the McHenry County Conservation District board of trustees at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at Brookdale Administrative Offices in Woodstock. A public viewing of the site maps and plans will be hosted prior to the board meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. Staff will be available to answer any questions.

It's nearly time to "lay that willow on that onion." No, it is not about cooking or gardening. Rather, "willow" refers to a " base ball" bat, "onion, apple, horsehide or pill" refers to the ball … at least it did in 1860. The McHenry County Historical Society and Grayslake Heritage Center are collaborating to stage a Civil War-era baseball game at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, in Prairie Grove.
