Taxpayers served by the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District could see better service times as soon as this fall, according to a plan approved Monday night to build a third fire station that will take advantage of two key Fox River crossings. Trustees approved a $150,000 purchase of 2.2 acres of land at 6N330 Route 25 in unincorporated Kane County near St. Charles. The site is the former home of the old Wise-Hamlin Plastic Factory. Though not technically a short sale, the property is bank land after a $654,000 judgment against the former land owner.

Seventeen people have filed to run as write-in candidates in Kane County for the April 9 consolidated elections. Two more people have joined the Batavia 7th Ward race as write-in candidates, and another person has joined the Geneva Township clerk race.

Moving Picture: Area firefighters purchase 9/11 trucksFeb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Scott Vaughn of Vernon Hills is a member of the Remembrance Rescue Project and also a captain with the Fox River and Countryside Fire and Rescue. With the help of other volunteers from fire departments around the country, they honor the firefighters who lost their lives aboard New York Fire Department Engines 4 and 5. The renovated trucks travel around the suburbs and the country as educational tools, historical artifacts and memorials.

St. Charles, fire district settle lawsuit Jan 9, 2013 12:00 AM
The hate-hate relationship between the city of St. Charles and the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District fueled litigation over a service contract that has now reached a settlement. The fire district is coughing up about $18,000 in trade for the city dropping any ability to seek further litigation about past service contracts. Fire district trustees also face the first election in the history of their organization this April.

Just one month ago, the Lexington Club project seemed dead in St. Charles. But the project, which aims to build up to 102 townhouses and 28 single-family homes on the former Applied Composites site, has new life after two aldermen changed votes, which resulted in a tie that the mayor broke. One resident shouted at the council that their votes had "disgraced us as citizens."

Voters can decide to elect Fox River & Countryside trustees Nov 3, 2012 12:00 AM
Taxpayers serviced by the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District have placed a binding referendum on the ballot that calls for direct election of the district's trustees. A vote in favor of the referendum would strip the incoming Kane County Board chairman of the power to appoint the trustees.

The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District has banned outdoor burning in Wayne, Campton and St. Charles townships, and also in the villages of Wayne and Campton Hills. The fire chief said fireworks have also caused several recent fires that threatened homes.

Fire causes $40,000 damage to garage Feb 7, 2012 12:00 AM
No one was injured in a large garage fire near St. Charles late Monday night, authorities said. The fire remains under investigation, and caused about $40,000 in damage.

Rescue Unit 4, one of the search-and-rescue units that responded to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was featured at the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District's open house on Sunday. The truck is used as an educational tool by the Remembrance Rescue Project, a nonprofit group started by area firefighters.
