    Kane County officials agreed to a somewhat risky move Wednesday by pushing forward with the second phase of engineering on a proposed cross country facility before learning the results of a financial feasibility study. The engineering will cost $200,000 and could be lost funds if the study turns up red flags. Not expecting any bumps in the road, a board committee decided its better to not delay spring construction while waiting for the study.

    Arnie Biondo’s tenure as executive director of the DuPage County Forest Preserve District is in jeopardy roughly eight months after it began. Forest preserve commissioners met behind closed doors for more than three hours Tuesday before emerging to announce Biondo has been placed on paid leave. They said in a written statement that Biondo and the district are “evaluating employment options” and details will be made public within two weeks.

    Long-awaited improvements that will make Brunner Forest Preserve more accessible to the public are coming later this year, with the construction of the longest single trail ever built by the Kane County Forest Preserve District. The 741-acre preserve has been open to the public since the district bought the property in 2008. However, with few land improvements, the property has a public stigma of being mostly inaccessible.

    Details of an agreement that will send more than $800,000 from Kane County to the Kane County Forest Preserve District for Settler's Hill Golf Course improvements met the liking of commissioners Thursday. The money is just part of more than $4.25 million that may eventually flow to the forest preserve district for the Geneva facility, not including the cost of building a new clubhouse.

    The former owners of Horizon Farms have sued a local bank and others, disputing the legality of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County's purchase of the nearly 400-acre Barrington Hills equestrian estate, and claiming the forest preserve paid almost double the appraisal price.

    Forest Preserves of Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle introduced an ordinance Tuesday that will create a Conservation and Policy Council. In February, the county adopted the Next Century Conservation Plan to guide the Forest Preserves for the next 100 years.

    After years of planning, work is set to begin to drain a hidden, man-made lake and restore the meandering North Mill Creek at the Ethel's Woods Forest Preserve near Antioch. The Lake County Forest Preserve District board on Tuesday approved measures to start the $1.2 million project to slowly drain Rasmussen Lake.
