    With a third of the Fittest Loser Challenge now behind them, the five contestants assess what has to be one of the most challenging components of the 12-week fitness and nutrition competition: weekly boot camp. While each member works with a personal trainer three times a week one-on-one and also on their own, it is only on Saturdays that they are all together for boot camp. As the name implies, boot camp is a tough all-body workout that requires supersized tenacity and an even bigger dose of teamwork.

    When I met with my personal trainer, Joshua Steckler, for my first full training session at Push Fitness in Schaumburg, I was hyped. I was ready to sweat, push and gush while he barked fitness commands. But that didn’t happen. Steckler, who is actually mild-mannered and even-keeled, used that session to discuss my nutrition plan that would include 1,800 calories spread out in five meals. He explained the need for me to eat a specific combination of proteins, fats and carbohydrates and what that might look like. I would also need to drink about 100 ounces of water.

    The drive behind this year's Fittest Loser Challenge contestants can be found in the seven personal trainers from Push Fitness in Schaumburg. Each of the competitors will be fueled with nutrition advice, guided through rigorous workouts and encouraged over the next 12 weeks by these highly skilled fitness experts.

    Out of more than 200 applicants, five Daily Herald readers emerged as finalists in the 2014 Fittest Loser Challenge. They are Chris Kalamatas of Lake in the Hills; Cheryl Seibert of Joliet; John Bohanek of South Elgin; Allie Monroe of Schaumburg; and Tim Lange of Algonquin. These five contestants have tried it all — dieting on their own; formal weight loss programs; and trying to squeeze in a little exercise. Now, as part of the Fittest Loser Challenge, sponsored by the Daily Herald and Push Fitness in Schaumburg, they are excited about making future plans for what they expect will be new bodies and new lives in the weeks to come.

    Community and corporate groups are joining the Fittest Loser Challenge as well. For the second year, the Daily Herald is sponsoring the Fittest Loser Community Challenge. Twenty-three corporate teams and 13 park district teams are working to improve their fitness and lose weight. Last year, the winning community team — the Schaumburg Park District — lost 15 percent of its collective weight. This year’s teams are just as motivated.
