  • Energy, stamina and confidence worth the workout battle scars May 19, 2014 5:30 AM
What a bittersweet time to have the Fittest Loser Challenge end, says Fittest Loser journalist Lisa Jones Townsel. In her words: While the nutrition plan was strict and the exercise regimen extra hard, it’s now time to face life on my own … a graduation, if you will. But there is no way that I will soon forget this enormous learning experience. Along the way, I tried to take mental notes about what the important matters were that the trainers all stressed. Now I just have to keep it going.

During this final week of the Fittest Loser Community Challenge, our corporate and park district team partners reminisce about a 12-week journey that has transformed their lives. “It’s truly amazing what 12 weeks — 12 short weeks can do,” says Amanda Seilheimer, a member of the Lutheran Life Communities’ Wellness Warriors. “It was an amazing experience, and I feel so blessed!”

  • Lessons learned: Contestants reflect on their journey May 12, 2014 5:30 AM
So what has the 2014 Fittest Loser Challenge meant to this year’s five contestants? Much more than weight loss. Sure, they’re ecstatic to have lost a heap of weight, but the lessons go much deeper than that. Here, they speak of new friendships, greater self-confidence, and success measured far beyond the scope of the competition.

  • Focus trumps fear — and other lessons I learned along the way May 12, 2014 5:30 AM
Trust the pros, Fittest Loser journalist Lisa Jones Townsel says. In her words: When I first met my Push Fitness trainer Joshua Steckler, I saw him as the epitome of fitness and figured he’d view me as the epitome of fat. But over the past 12 weeks, he worked me hard, respectably, but hard, and seemed to be concerned about my concerns every step of the way.

  • Fitness homework pays off with successful run May 5, 2014 5:30 AM
For about a year prior to the Fittest Loser Challenge, I ran as a way to bolster weight loss. I used to think of it as a simple sport. I didn’t know that there were measurable ways to track my progress and to build up my heart rate. This season, boot camp instructor Brad Parotto doubled as running coach, too. He helped us to prepare to participate in the DuPage Human Race 5K Run.

  • Community teams drop weight, focus on healthy lifestyles May 5, 2014 5:45 AM
The 23 corporate and 13 park district teams have worked themselves into a frenzy, right up to the finish line. They have learned better eating habits, disciplined workout skills and attained focus as never before. Subsequently, they have convinced themselves that a healthier, fit lifestyle is within their reach. They are also having loads of fun along the way, like the time Holly from Team Unrepentant Thinners got the chance to meet “Biggest Loser” trainer Jillian Michaels.

  • Fittest Loser contestants race to the finish May 5, 2014 3:12 PM
Participating in races, like the recent DuPage Human Race 5K Run may be old hat for some, but for the five contestants in the Fittest Loser Challenge it was a secretly dreaded, though inevitable event. “It was important for the contestants to strive for goals that may have been recently unattainable; and a 5K was just that,” said Brad Parotto, the Push Fitness running coach for the challenge.

  • Learning discipline for food choices Apr 28, 2014 5:30 AM
One of the biggest take-aways from the Fittest Loser Challenge for me has been discipline. I have learned more about the important role exercise plays and the right food, eaten at the right time. In all honesty, I have been surprised to learn what a large role food plays in the weight-loss process. It’s not simply about eating less and exercising more. Sometimes the dynamics shift, and you have to eat more, but of the right things.

  • Fittest Loser contestants embrace healthier eating plans Apr 28, 2014 5:30 AM
OK, yes all of the Fittest Loser Challenge contestants are on a strict nutrition plan, but that doesn’t mean they’re not human. They miss eating pizza! Sure, not having a scoop of ice cream drives them bananas. But denying themselves those pleasures for a time and learning about the benefits of healthier choices have resulted in dramatically changed bodies and minds related to food.
