Cutting teaching hours for part-time faculty, absorbing the cost of employee pensions, retraining today's workforce for an evolving job market, and improving graduation rates are among the top concerns for five candidates running for three, six-year term seats on the Oakton Community College board. The candidates are incumbents Joan DiLeonardi, Ann Tennes, and Eric Staley, and newcomers Kyle Frank and Neil Meccia.

"If you don't have contingent labor, you don't have community colleges," Roosevelt University faculty member Beverly Stewart said afterward.

Morgan Johnson and Jamie Printy scored 18 points apiece and Iowa defeated Northwestern 60-55 on Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten women's tournament. Bethany Doolittle added 10 points and Samantha Logic grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (20-11), the seventh seed in the tournament. They advance to meet No. 21 Nebraska, the Big Ten's second seed, in Friday's quarterfinals.

Suburban education officials are worried looming federal changes to GED testing will leave those less fortunate with one less path to joining the workforce. The test will become computerized in 2014, and the price to take the exam will more than double. Plus, you need a credit card and an email address. "It’s going to be people with the least resources who are going to be left out," Josh Boies of Kane County says.

Harper approves $2 per credit hour tuition increaseFeb 28, 2013 12:00 AM
Consistent with a regional trend among community colleges, Harper College will ask its students to dig a little deeper into their pockets for the cost of a high education. The board of trustees last week unanimously approved increasing tuition by $2 per credit hour beginning in the summer 2013 term. For a full-time student taking 30 credit hours annually, that’s an additional $60 for a total of $3,735.

Police say alcohol a factor in Northwestern death Feb 27, 2013 12:00 AM
After a months-long investigation, police say they believe alcohol played a role in the death of a Northwestern University student whose body was found in a harbor near the school’s suburban Chicago campus. Evanston police say tests showed 18-year-old Harsha Maddula’s blood-alcohol content was one and a half times the legal limit. They determined his death was accidental.
