  • Heady effort powers Prospect Dec 28, 2013 12:00 AM
Ashley Graham could finally breathe a little easier. The Prospect coach watched with great trepidation as the Knights’ 17-point lead after three quarters dwindled to 2 late in the game. But Prospect (10-3) withstood Evanston’s valiant late rally and produced enough down the stretch to post a 56-51 semifinal win Saturday night to advance to the championship game of the 31st Annual Charger Classic hosted by Dundee-Crown. The Knights will face New Trier, which defeated Mother McAuley 47-42 in the other semifinal, for the title at 8 p.m. Monday.

  • Kubiuk, Miller help Barrington pass first playoff test Nov 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Barrington wide receiver Scott Miller loves when opponents line up right across from him. “They were using press coverage against me,” Miller said. “And I can exploit my speed better against that. I can use my speed to get the guy.” Miller, who was sixth in the state last spring in the 200-meter dash, broke away from coverage three times, and Broncos quarterback Daniel Kubiuk was right on target on each occasion as host Barrington flew past Evanston 23-8 Saturday in the opening round of the Class 8A playoffs. Barrington (9-1), which had not won a playoff game since 2008, will play next weekend at Warren, a 33-17 winner over Glenbrook South.

  • Montmarquette helps Maine West stay on a roll May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Brie Montmarquette is looking forward to bowling at Northern Illinois University’s co-recreation program when she gets to DeKalb. With a 175 average on the lanes, Montmarquette spends a lot of time in bowling leagues when she is not playing softball. But the senior is also quite talented with a softball bat in her hand. Playing her final game on the Maine West softball field, Montmarquette came up with the game-winning RBI when she doubled to left center, driving home Renee Pond with one in the bottom of the fifth inning. Two batters later, with two outs, junior Sadie Argus belted her sixth homer of the season — a 2-run blast to right center — and those 3 runs gave senior ace Ariel Valles a 3-0 shutout over No. 10 Evanston.

Down by 13 points at half, the Fillies staged a superb comeback in the final two quarters and got as close at 2 points with 1:07 left when senior Maddie Bartz drilled a 17-footer. But Evanston made 3 free throws in the final 26 seconds to seal its 15th win without a loss and advance to today’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal against Naperville Central, a 56-41 winner against New Trier.
