    The parent of United Airlines reported a $620 million quarterly loss on Thursday as travelers stayed away following its problems earlier in the year with absorbing Continental.It posted a full-year loss of $723 million, too, almost wiping out its $840 million profit from 2011. The fourth-quarter loss worked out to $1.87 per share. Excluding special items the loss would have been 58 cents per share, matching expectations of analysts surveyed by FactSet.

     
  • Elk Grove Township home destroyed by fire Jan 22, 2013 12:00 AM
    A trailer home in unincorporated Elk Grove Township was destroyed in an early morning fire Tuesday, officials said. Firefighters responded to a call at 5:54 a.m. reporting a fire in the Oasis Mobile Home Park, just south of I-90 and east of Elmhurst Road. No injuries were reported, but one person has been displaced.

    After nearly 28 years with Elk Grove Township, Supervisor Nanci Vanderweel is stepping down at the end of her elected four-year term this April. “This has been very satisfying ... now, it’s time to move on and let somebody else sit here,” said the 75-year-old who became the first woman supervisor in the township’s 162-year history. She reflected this week on her long career in suburban politics, which started in the 1970s.
