    Schaumburg senior Jada Blackwell scored 9 of her team-high 13 points in overtime as the Saxons pulled out a 40-37 girls basketball victory over visiting Palatine in Mid-Suburban West play on Friday. Blackwell had a big 3-pointer in the extra session along with 4 free throws and a basket while classmate Brittany Reinhart also made a free throw as the hosts outscored the Pirates 10-7 in the extra four minutes.

    Mid-Suburban League girls bowlers were competing for a cure Thursday night at Arlington Lanes. While rolling their usual conference matches, the MSL players were also bowling for the fight against epilepsy. “In addition to showing awareness,” said Hoffman Estates coach Dan Pfligler, “the teams were raising money for the cause. All of the teams were wearing a ‘Bowl for the Cure – Strike Against Epilepsy’ t-shirt, and many people were supporting by not only wearing the shirts but also making donations. Meanwhile, on the lanes, the Hawks continued to excel. Hoffman Estates defeated Buffalo Grove 7-2, led by sophomore Amanda Richae, who excelled at Wednesday’s meet by rolling a 699 series — the best in the league so far this year.

    U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s office will host an information session Thursday night about the 34th annual Congressional Art Competition. Teachers, high school students and parents are invited to the meeting, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the foyer conference room of Elk Grove High School.

    There’s a little more breathing room at the top of the Mid-Suburban East boys basketball race. Host Elk Grove cashed in at the free throw line, converting 24 of 37 free throws to ease past Prospect 74-61 on Saturday night. Elk Grove stays atop the conference with a 10-4, 4-1 record while the Knights fell to 8-7 and 3-2. With Hersey’s win over Wheeling on Saturday night, the Huskies are also 4-1 in the East. The Grenadiers will be out to avenge a 64-50 loss to Hersey in December when Elk Grove and the Huskies meet Saturday.

    Hersey’s newest sharpshooter was at it again on Saturday afternoon at the Glenbrook South dome in Glenview. Annie Korff had three 3-pointers through Hersey’s first 18 girls basketball games. But in the last two she has four. The senior guard had two on Friday night and tossed in two more in the first half of Saturday’s 48-37 win over the host Titans while scoring a game-high 17 points.

    Prospect senior Maddie Larock and Rolling Meadows junior Kelly Johnston both are eyeing a big finish at the girls gymnastics state meet this season. Larock and Johnston took a big step toward that goal on Saturday, putting on state-worthy performances in tying for the all-around with 37.50 at the Prospect Invitational. Larock took first on the bars (9.5) and had second-place finishes on vault (9.65) and beam (9.55) in leading the Knights to the team title with a season-best score of 144.3. Schaumburg hit a season-best 140.45 to take second, followed by Rolling Meadows (134.85), Buffalo Grove (132.35), Elk Grove (115.60) and Wheeling (109.95).

    Hannah Mickey scored a career-high 19 points to help the Rolling Meadows girl basketball team get past visiting Buffalo Grove 51-37 on Friday night. The junior forward had 9 field goals, at least two in every quarter as the Mustangs improved to 14-5 and 2-3 in the Mid-Suburban East.

    Conant’s girls basketball team remained one game out of first place in the Mid-Suburban West by defeating host Barrington 49-36 on Saturday night. The Cougars used balanced scoring to improve to 12-2 and 3-1 in the MSL West behind five-time defending champ Fremd (4-0).

    Highland Park took top honors in the eight-team invitational hosted by Elk Grove on Saturday, finishing with 375 points to better Cary-Grove (344), Hoffman Estates (312) and the host Grenadiers (240). Cary-Grove junior Cooper Langanis took top honors in the 200-yard free (1:46.75) and 500 free (4:56.38). Elk Grove senior Colin Williams won the 100 fly (53.27) and placed second in the 200 free (1:47.43). Hoffman Estates had the top finishers in both the ‘fastest’ and ‘fast’ heats of the 50 free. Joe Smiley won the ‘fast’ in 22.79 and Bartosz Widelak won the ‘fastest’ in 22.57.

    Elk Grove put its foot on the gas pedal and didn’t let up Friday night at Wheeling. The Grenadiers hit 5 of their first 6 three-point attempts — the only miss being a half court heave at the first-quarter buzzer — to run away with a 77-56 Mid-Suburban East victory.

    The Pirates’ boys swimming team had double individual winners in sophomore Alex Bartosik and freshman Jacob Klein in a 130-47 victory at Elk Grove on Friday in a Mid-Suburban League individual crossover. Bartosik won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.48) and the 500 free (5:02.23), while Klein won the 200 IM (2:08.65) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.25).

    For the fourth straight game and ninth of the season, Deanna Kuzmanic scored in the 20s and the Wildcats won their sixth straight with a 46-36 victory at Barrington. The senior guard poured in a game-high 24 points including two 3-pointers as Wheeling improved to 12-4 with the Mid-Suburban League crossover victory.

    Finally, some breathing room for Palatine. The Pirates wrapped up a 3-1 performance in York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic on Tuesday with a 66-50 victory over Elk Grove. Each of Palatine’s three previous tournament games had been decided by a point. Balanced scoring and an efficient offensive effort were among the keys for Palatine (9-4). Chris Macahon led the way with a game-high 19 points, finishing 7-for-11 from the field with five 3s and 4 steals.

    Hersey coach Mary Fendley could not recall in her 16 seasons losing two prominent players to injury (senior captains Annie Korff and Juliette Vainisi) during the same week. First, Vainisi suffered a dislocated elbow at practice and then Korff went out of Friday’s Wheaton North tournament game early in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury ankle. The young Huskies still got the result they were after, a 47-39 victory over Glenbard South.

    Schaumburg’s girls basketball team recovered smartly from an opening-round loss in the Wheaton North tournament to defeat Willowbrook 47-30 on Tuesday afternoon. The Saxons held a 1-point lead at the break but gradually pulled away in the second half outscoring the Warriors 29-13. Schaumburg’s defense limited Willowbrook to 1 free throw in the third quarter. Leading the charge for the Saxons were Tatiana Doroskin (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Jada Blackwell (14 points, 7 rebounds).
