    Rolling Meadows junior guard Megan King put on a 3-point shooting clinic in the first half as the Mustangs began defense of their Mid-Suburban League East championship with a 65-49 victory at Elk Grove. King’s game-high 21 points all came in the first half from long distance as Meadows improved to 6-1 overall.

    You’ll have to forgive John Schauble if he looked a bit tired Friday evening. He had been up most of the previous night pondering his return as coach of the Palatine boys swimming and diving team. See, the last time he coached the Pirates was 1990. Since then, he served as Aquatics Director and physical education teacher at Stevenson, where he founded the Patriot Aquatic Club. But life is often cyclical, and there was Schauble on deck at the Palatine pool Friday, watching with a satisfaction as his charges roared to a convincing 118-67 victory over Buffalo Grove in a Mid-Suburban League crossover meet.

Prospect to help lead Prospect to a 72-38 victory over visiting Schaumburg.Will, a senior guard headed to Brown University, closed to within 5 points of becoming the Knights’ all-time leading scorer in girls basketball history. She made 10 field goals (three 3-pointers) and 2 free throws on Tuesday at the Jean Walker Field House, named after the coach who was in charge when Colleen Grant set the school record of 1,352 points from 1977 to 1981.

    Hoffman Estates freshman Allura Magsino admitted that it was a little “nerve-wracking” going into her first Mid-Suburban League match. “But I really wasn’t that nervous,” said Magsino, “because I knew my team was there to support me.” And if there were any worries about how the freshman would perform under pressure, those doubts were dispelled Monday night at Arlington Lanes. Magsino fired a 204 in the first game en route to a 561 series as the Hawks defeated Hersey 2,697 pins to 2,604 in a matchup of what should be two of the MSL’s top teams this season.

    Fremd’s boys basketball team wrapped up its second consecutive Chuck Mitchell Thanksgiving basketball tournament championship at Fenton by stopping Elk Grove 45-40 in the 29th-year of the event Friday afternoon. The Vikings (4-0), who have now won 32 of their last 33 games, did it with clutch shooting and defense.

  • Elk Grove thwarts South Elgin’s plan Nov 25, 2014 10:45 PM
    South Elgin boys basketball coach Matt Petersen had a good defensive scheme for controlling Elk Grove’s offense. “We knew that if we put pressure on them right from the start we could force the turnovers and get some scores,” said Petersen. “But when the game started, it didn’t happen. We made Elk Grove look real comfortable at the start of the game.” The Grenadiers hit six 3-point baskets in the first quarter on the way to finishing with 12. Add to that two old-fashioned 3-point plays and Elk Grove had a 25-17 lead after one quarter. Dan Hadler scored 9 of his 20 points to go along with 7 rebounds in the Grenadiers’ 82-71 win over the Storm at the 29th annual Chuck Mitchell Tournament held at Fenton High School. Elk Grove improved to 2-0 while South Elgin, which played inspired basketball in spots, fell to 1-1.
