Tentative U-46 contract deal reached, both sides say May 11, 2012 12:00 AM
Bargaining teams for the Elgin Area School District U-46 board of trustees and the Elgin Teachers Association have reached a tentative contract agreement, officials from both sides announced late Friday. The tentative pact was struck Friday morning during a third session with a federal mediator. Its the second such agreement thats been reached since the two sides began negotiations a year ago.

U-46 intern program would create admin pipelineMay 11, 2012 12:00 AM
Elgin Area School District U-46 is starting an internship program for future administrators. But some union leaders are asking where the money would come from to pay for the internship when the district keeps telling teachers it has no money for pay increases or additional resources. Superintendent Jose Torres says the program is will create a pipeline or bench from within the district. "If I have retirees next year, I am going to have to hire outside of the district," Torres said. "This is an investment in the district. We want people who know U-46 and its values, committment and culture."

Alexa Abaroa's talent as a baker and cake decorator is astonishing for someone so young, everyone says. The Bartlett High School senior was the first student asked to prepare a cake for the VIP room at the annual Illinois ProStart Student Invitational at Kendall College. "I will tell you that all the other students were really wowed by her cake," said Kathy Summers, of the Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.

Timber Trails supporting literacy through sharingMay 9, 2012 12:00 AM
Next year, students at Timber Trails Elementary School in Hoffman Estates will have greater reading options thanks to a books sharing program started by the Parent and Teacher Organization. The program lets students swap out books they have read for a new book. Parent Anne Schwaab said the program will make up for some of the reduced library services at the school.

Elgin Area School District U-46 will approve the nomination of Diana Castillo, a junior at Larkin High School, as the next student advisor to the board of education. "She brings a unique blend of intellectual capacity, cross-cultural experience and humanitarian passion which would make her a vital part of the school board team," Larkin High School Principal Jon Tuin wrote in a letter of recommendation to the school board.
