    Today, we introduce you to some amazing teenagers. The members of the 2011-12 Daily Herald Academic Team all have grades and test scores so stellar they could blind. But read past the test scores, and what you find are humble young people, dedicated to learning and intent on using education to further their goals.

    Meet the members of the 2011-2012 Fox Valley Academic Team. Here are 10 teenagers who know what they want out of life. Some of them settled on a life goal when they were preschoolers. Others took a little bit longer to decide. But they all know the possibilities are endless. "Putting my passion into diverse activities has opened the gateway for academic learning to be forged into life success," writes Connor Flexman of Elgin Academy.

    They have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society. "I look forward to someday being able to help those in need through the wonders of human ingenuity and medical technology -- on a scale I had never before thought possible," writes Antonio Spina, of Bartlett High School.

  • St. Edward shakes off Elgin Academy May 8, 2012 12:00 AM
    After St. Edward put up a combined 11 goals in its previous 2 meetings with Elgin Academy, the Hilltoppers needed to do something different. Elgin Academy did, staying with St. Edward for nearly the entire game of Tuesdays semifinal game of the Class 1A Genoa-Kingston regional. The Green Wave scored once in each half to take a 2-0 victory.

     
  •  Elgin Academy’s Ashley Barnes (9) weaves her way through Kirkland’s Anna Meyer (6) and Samantha Flores on her way to take a shot during Class 1A regional soccer action in Elgin Saturday. Barnes scored 7 goals and the Hilltoppers won 9-2. They will play St. Edward Tuesday in Genoa in the regional semifinals.

    Kirkland Hiawatha tried every imaginable defense in an attempt to contain Elgin Academy senior forward Ashley Barnes. Nothing worked. Barnes enjoyed a regional game to remember. Scoring an amazing 7 goals, which is tied for fourth place for most goals in an IHSA girls soccer game, the senior standout propelled the fourth-seeded Hilltoppers to a lopsided 9-2 win over No. 5 Kirkland Hiawatha in the play-in game of the Class 1A Genoa-Kingston regional Saturday in Elgin.

  •  Matthew Carlson, second from left, had a tumor removed from his chest in January and doctors expect him to stay cancer-free. His brother, Chris Pawelski, and parents Angela and Todd Carlson, have been anxiously watching the 4-year-old heal emotionally as well as physically after a scary surgery and repeated doctor visits. The family is organizing a team to participate in the American Cancer Society Walk & Roll event in Elgin.

    Angela Carlson hesitates to say her family has been lucky, because it's only luck in the context of a nightmare. Doctors discovered a tumor in her son Matthew's chest in January. The only reason they found it was because of a CT scan following a tonsillectomy that left Matthew, 4, with more than a week of terrible headaches.

    Elgin Academys Charlie Vogel and Elgins Reza Khan both left Saturdays Elgin boys tennis invitational undefeated. The Maroons won the team title, edging out South Elgin in the final match of the day, but Larkin defeated Elgin 3-2 to open the invite. Larkins No. 2 doubles team of Mark Niemier and Nick Flack were a game away from losing to South Elgins Michael Lopez and Muhammad Zamir, but came back to win not only that match but finish the day as one of only two undefeated doubles teams. if Saturday serves as a preview for the Elgin sectional, which includes all four of these teams, then any one player or team can win.
