  • Fox Valley police reports Aug 7, 2014 4:45 PM
    Shadontre Q. Smith, 21, of Elgin, was charged Thursday with criminal damage to government property, resisting or obstructing a police officer and obstructing identification, according to court records. He is accused of damaging an Elgin Police Department squad car. After causing the damage, which was less than $500, he ran from a police officer. Smith then gave false names to the officers once they detained him.

  • Barrington Hills teen gets 90 days for fatal DUI crash Aug 8, 2014 11:16 AM
    A Cook County judge on Thursday sentenced a Barrington Hills teen to 90 days in Cook County jail and three years' probation for the 2013 head-on crash that killed a 61-year-old Elgin man and seriously injured the man's fiancee. In sentencing Karsten James Eilertsen, Judge Thomas Fecarotta said he was giving him “a taste” of what awaits him if he violates his probation.

    Police are looking for a missing Elgin man who hasn’t been heard from since Tuesday. Elgin police asked for the public’s help Thursday night in finding 22-year-old John Cotton Jr., who has been missing since 8 a.m. Tuesday from his home in the 1400 block of Knotty Pine Drive.

    A portion of Big Timber Road in Elgin will close later this month, city officials said in a news release. Big Timber Road from Todd Farm Drive to McLean Boulevard will close for at least five days beginning Aug. 18 for work on the railroad track spur at 1600 Big Timber Road.

    Complaints filed by residents against the Elgin Police Department have decreased steadily in the last five years. There were just nine complaints since Jan. 1, 2013. Officer Lawrence Dickman received the stiffest discipline with a three-day suspension after alcohol was served to minors at a party at his house. “We believe we do have a lot of good officers," Deputy Chief Bill Wolf said.

  • Fox Valley police reports Aug 6, 2014 4:47 PM
    Antonio O. Neal Jr., 25, of Elgin, was charged Tuesday with retail theft, according to court records. While at Wal-Mart, 1100 S. Randall Road, Elgin, he put two air mattresses into a cart and purchased one of them, police said. After bringing the purchased air mattress to his car, Neal went back into the store and returned the air mattress he didn’t purchase at the store’s customer service desk, where he was refunded $75.74. He was previously convicted of a theft-related offense in June. Neal’s bail was set at $35,000 in Kane County bond court, and his next court date is Aug. 15.
