  • Girls basketball / Fox Valley roundup Jan 20, 2015 10:52 PM
A 14-game losing streak is no more for Elgin after Lakiya Harvey’s 13 points sparked a 44-32 Elgin City Classic win over host Westminster Christian on Tuesday.

  • Larkin topples Westminster Jan 19, 2015 4:02 PM
Normally when Marlee Kyles and Quixmia Washington start off slow for the Larkin girls basketball team, the Royals can find themselves in a jam early in the contest. So when the duo combined for just 4 points in the first quarter in the final round of the Elgin City Classic against Westminster Christian it could have spelled trouble. Luckily for the Royals the rest of the team picked up the slack, ripping off an 18-0 run to end the first quarter and start the second as they snapped a 3-game losing streak and won big 52-26 on the Warriors’ home court Monday.

  • Niles North outscores Elgin Jan 19, 2015 9:31 PM
Elgin boys basketball coach Mike Sitter is happy with his team’s effort. He is concerned about the Maroons’ execution. With Niles North outscoring Elgin 29-8 in the second quarter, the Vikings cruised to an 86-44 win over the Maroons in their final game of the 3rd Annual Lake Zurich Martin Luther King Classic on Monday night.

  • Lake Zurich reverts to form, tops Elgin Jan 19, 2015 2:25 PM
Lake Zurich got back to basics after a disappointing loss to Palatine on Saturday night. The Bears came out with a different look and intensity on Monday morning as they rolled past Elgin 59-38 in their own Martin Luther King tournament. The Maroons played without one of their starters, Lavion Baldwin, for a fourth straight game.

  • Carmel overcomes slow start against Elgin Jan 17, 2015 6:37 PM
Clearly, some of the credit goes to Shareif Belser-Bailey. If Carmel’s junior guard had not made good on a 3-point play late in the first quarter on Saturday afternoon, the Corsairs’ boys basketball team would have been shut out for the entire quarter. Carmel missed 10 of 11 shots in the period in this matchup against Elgin at the 3rd annual Martin Luther King Classic held at Lake Zurich. However, there were plenty of reasons for this poor shooting. The Corsairs (8-10) had played Friday night at Marist, and got home late. Carmel also had already played host Lake Zurich on Saturday morning. OK — enough of the bad news for Carmel. The Corsairs outscored Elgin 24-6 in the fourth quarter, had three starters score 11 points and put away the Maroons 56-35.

  • Palatine powers past Elgin Jan 17, 2015 5:58 PM
As efficiently as Palatine played Saturday afternoon in its 84-49 win over Elgin at the Lake Zurich MLK Tournament, the Pirates know they have to play better. Palatine (12-6) was gearing up for a 7 p.m. prime-timer later in the day against the host Bears, a tall, slick-shooting bunch who ran Carmel off the floor earlier in this two-game-a-day event that carries into Monday. The Pirates showed they were ready to compete against a game but outmanned Elgin (5-12) squad. Palatine ran out to a 45-17 halftime lead on the strength of forcing 16 turnovers out of the Maroons and shooting the lights out. Justin Chaney (15 points) did his usual thing from the perimeter, complemented by R.J. Smith and Michael E. Williams, who dominated the inside game. Smith’s steal and 3-point play closed the first quarter at 21-7 for the Pirates.

  • Bartlett/Streamwood swims strong in Coleman’s honor Jan 17, 2015 6:29 PM
The Mike Coleman Memorial Invitational isn’t just another meet on the schedule for the Bartlett/Streamwood co-op boys swim team. Sure, it was a home meet, but there’s a lot more to it for the Sabrehawks. Its namesake was a former team MVP and record holder in the 200-yard medley relay and 200 free relay, who passed away in 2011. That’s why the past couple of weeks of training were dedicated solely to racing well against a slate of formidable competition. That the Sabrehawks did, finishing fourth with 63 points, behind repeat champion Plainfield, which won eight of the 10 events and finished with 155 points.

  • Streamwood turns the tables on Elgin Jan 16, 2015 11:39 PM
What a different 6 weeks and one important player can make. Back on December 5 the Streamwood boys basketball team lost at Elgin by 14 points. On Friday night the Sabres returned the favor with a 52-37 win at home against the Maroons in an Upstate Eight River contest.

  • Streamwood battles past Elgin Jan 16, 2015 10:52 PM
It truly was a tale of two halves for the Streamwood girls basketball team against Elgin on Friday night. In the first half points were hard to come by for either side with just 6 total baskets made from the field combined. It was in the second when the script was flipped for the Sabres, scoring 30 points in the final two frames to down the Maroons 46-28 in Upstate Eight Conference River Division action in Streamwood.

  • IBCA Hall of Fame a just reward for Elgin’s Turek Jan 15, 2015 8:15 PM
Sports writers loved Lee Turek. Officials may not have liked him all the time. And the girls who played basketball for him at Elgin High may not have liked him all the time. But sports writers loved him. One thing Turek always had going for him, win or lose, was his candor. Most times, that candor was more on display after a loss than a win. Many of the things Turek had to say after a basketball game never saw print, and never will. Another thing Turek always had going for him, and still does, was his passion for the game of basketball, for the athletes he coached and for Elgin High School. And on Saturday, May 2 Turek will receive a just reward for his career when he is inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

  • Andresen likes the progress D300 co-op is making Jan 14, 2015 9:48 PM
While the District 300 (Dundee-Crown, Hampshire, Jacobs) boys swimming team didn’t register a victory in a recent meet against the District 155 co-op team, coach Rick Andresen saw plenty of progress that has him optimistic about what lies ahead. “We had a good meet,” he said. “We saw a lot of encouraging things and we saw some things that need work. We are getting better, but we need to tighten some things. The times we swam were very respectable. We had nice time drops in some events. All of the hard work we did during the holiday break might be paying off. I’m pleased overall, especially with the improvement of our younger kids.”

  • Krocko and Co. helping Hampshire make progress Jan 14, 2015 10:22 PM
From the early stages of the wrestling campaign, coach Terry Wilkinson’s Hampshire club has been off and running, finishing strong in each tournament it has attended while already surpassing its 14-win season from a year ago. On Wednesday, Anton Krocko and his teammates extended the good vibe, treating a senior night crowd to victories over visitors Elmwood Park and Elgin as the Whips improved to 15-5. Hampshire overwhelmed an undermanned Elmwood Park 60-15 before finishing with a 46-18 triumph over Elgin. The Maroons went 1-1 on the night after defeating Elmwood Park 48-12 in the first matchup of the evening.

  • Quick start propels Larkin past Elgin Jan 10, 2015 9:15 PM
A big losing streak was coming to an end on Saturday afternoon one way or another. On one side there was the Elgin girls' basketball team, struggling to score during a 10-game losing streak, while on the other was Larkin, which had a 7-game skid going and had not won since last seeing the Maroons. Despite early foul trouble in the second half and a big push by Elgin, the Royals used a big early lead to secure a 56-40 win on their home court in the first round of the Elgin City Classic.

  • Huntley, Hampshire make holiday strides Jan 8, 2015 8:49 PM
Progress. That’s what most basketball teams look for at holiday tournaments and Huntley’s girls definitely made some at Montini. The Red Raiders went 3-1 at one of the top Christmas tournaments in the state, taking fifth place in the tough 16-team field. Huntley opened with a win over Batavia 43-37 before losing to Montini 63-33, but then came back and beat Geneva 66-63 in double overtime and Neuqua Valley 47-44. Geneva and Neuqua are leading their respective divisions in the Upstate Eight Conference.

  • Marian Central stops Elgin’s streak Jan 3, 2015 5:59 PM
After coming off a consolation championship and riding a three-game win streak to end 2014, the Elgin boys basketball team looked to build upon that momentum into the New Year. Unfortunately the Maroons ran into the bigs of Marian Central Catholic and took a 73-58 loss at Chesbrough Fieldhouse in Elgin on Saturday afternoon.
