    Instead of making study guides and cramming for finals, Lily Moradi will spend winter break this year relaxing and enjoying time with her friends and family. Moradi, a senior at Barrington High School, is just one of thousands of students in the suburbs benefiting from a growing trend of school districts changing their schedules to place first-semester exams before, rather than after, winter break. “Now kids can finally have a stress-free vacation,” she said.

    It will be among the top storylines of the football season if Elgin realizes its goal of making the playoffs after a winless 2013 season. Second-year coach Kyle Rohde said his players would have to stay healthy, improve weekly and get some breaks to go their way, but he doesn’t rule a postseason push out of the realm of possibility.

     
  • Elgin High students join global movement to save trees Aug 15, 2014 12:49 PM
    Elgin High School students will join a global movement to educate people about the importance of saving trees and biodiversity on Aug. 23. Students will conduct ecological educational activities from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., including burning brush piles and dead ash trees and cleaning up the trail that runs along the roughly 40 acres of natural areas adjacent to the school. They also will tie red forestry tape on trees throughout the school property to raise awareness about their ecological impact.

    She’s the 2014 Environmental Educator of the Year and her work with students has been featured in two PBS documentaries. Deb Perryman has received many accolades in her 24-year teaching career. What’s the secret to her success with students? “I’m always looking for a way to go outside of a book, looking for a way to bring in the real world,” said Perryman, who has taught biology and environmental science at Elgin High School for nearly 21 years.

     
  • St. Charles dance marathon to raise funds for teen arts Jul 15, 2014 5:25 PM
    Teenagers and adults in the Batavia, Elgin and St. Charles areas are urged to put on their dancing shoes for a good cause Friday. The Teen Writers and Artists Project will host the “T-WAAP Sock Hop” dance marathon, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Marquee Youth Stage in the lower level of The Quad/Charlestowne Mall, 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles. “This is our first one,” said Executive Director Diana Zwinak, adding that organizers hope to raise $5,000, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. “We can sustain our programming for the next year on that.”

At 33 years old, the former star for Elgin High School and the Fighting Illini is still not ready to let go. He plans to give back to the game he loves by launching The Players Camp with college basketball players as coaches.

     
  • Elgin High Class of ‘44 celebrates 70th reunion Jul 2, 2014 5:39 PM
    After World War II, the surviving members of the 356-member Elgin High School graduating class of 1944 have stayed in touch through reunions every five years. “At our age that’s pretty good,” said Al Mink, 88, of Elgin, who served two years with the Air Force during the war. The class of 1944 will celebrate its 70th reunion from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at Hickory Stick Bar & Grille at the Highlands of Elgin Golf Course, 875 Sports Way, Elgin.

  • Elgin Sports Hall of Fame awards scholarships Jun 10, 2014 9:04 PM
    The Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation recently awarded its scholarships for the 2013-14 school year. The ESHOF Foundation, founded in 1980, awards $1,300 scholarships to worthy student-athletes from high schools within the City of Elgin, as well as from Elgin Community College.

  • Bartlett tops Elgin, now gets a shot at No. 1 Batavia May 26, 2014 8:53 PM
    The Bartlett baseball team on Monday earned the chance to spring another postseason upset. Pitching on his familiar home mound, senior right-hander Doug VanDyke minimized the damage from Elgin threats in the second, third and seventh innings to complete a 5-3 victory in the regional opener. The win improved the Hawks to 6-0 in regional games since 2012.
