  • Larkin downs Elgin for fourth time this season Feb 16, 2015 11:00 PM

The Maroons didn’t make it easy early on, but eventually the Royals pulled away for a 52-34 win to advance to play top-seeded Dundee-Crown on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

  • Dinkheller’s officiating career honored with IBCA Hall induction Feb 11, 2015 9:45 PM
Elgin resident Jim Dinkheller had modest goals when he enrolled in a basketball officiating class taught by late Elgin legend Pete Kovacs in 1980. Talked into the class by Kovacs, who taught the Elgin Community College-affiliated course at Elgin’s Kimball Middle School, Dinkheller figured he could officiate to stay in shape through the winter months and earn a little cash to boot. Little did the Larkin graduate know it would lead to a 34-year officiating career and his eventual induction to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The longtime referee learned last month he is one of eight officials slated for induction at this year’s IBCA banquet in May, a level of recognition he never expected.

I didn’t want them doing us any favors. They have to get ready for the tournament.”

The 18-year-old was named Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin. "If I needed anything, if I was struggling, they were there. • St. Charles North has too much for Elgin Feb 5, 2015 10:42 PM
St. Charles North boys basketball coach Tom Poulin stood courtside at Elgin’s Chesbrough Field House Thursday night as his team warmed up and remarked how the impending game against the Maroons was of great concern to him. Most coaches would share Poulin’s concern, what with the North Stars having to play on the road against a team they beat by 60 points before Christmas, but a team that was missing its point guard that night and has competed better since that Dec. 13 embarrassment in St. Charles. And while the North Stars did come away with a 68-54 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win, the Maroons made them work for it this time.
