    A family and its pets escaped injury after a spark from their fireplace started a fire in the chimney Tuesday evening. The Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District responded to a call at 7:32 p.m. near the corner of Route 38 and Francis Road in Maple Park. The chimney fire had spread into the walls of the residence.

    A Wisconsin woman driving a stolen vehicle caused two crashes in the Western suburbs Saturday night, including a multiple-car pileup that killed herself and another driver, officials said. Campton Hills police responding at 8:46 p.m. to a four-car crash at 42W761 Route 38 determined that a vehicle driven by Jennifer Liston, 30, of Madison, Wis., was traveling at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred.

I don't know how it started," said Debbie Notaro, sitting on a bench overlooking the rubble of her home in the 3N100 block of Spring Wood Lane in Campton Hills.

    Authorities are investigating a fire that broke out late Thursday at a religious center in an unincorporated area near La Fox. The small fire at the Mata Amritanandamayi Center Chicago, located at 41W501 Keslinger Road, started about 9:30 p.m. inside a washroom and janitor's closet in the center's administration building. The fire and subsequent investigation comes at the same time as members of the center are getting ready for a five-day program with the expected visit of Amritanandamayi herself.

    Visibility was near zero due to a dust storm when a van smashed into the back of a semitrailer on Interstate 88 near Kaneville Thursday afternoon, causing a chain reaction that injured three people. The driver of the van suffered serious injuries and was airlifted from the scene. Two drivers were cited Friday with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
