Circuit Judge David Akemann agreed to the delay Monday at the request of the Elburn fire district, which is appealing his Aug. 28 decision to allow the referendum to take place. If voters approve the disconnection, Akemann would be asked to certify the vote and order the disconnection. If voters decide not to, Akemann would have to dismiss the petition, according to a motion filed by the Fox River district, which opposed the stay.

    A family and its pets escaped injury after a spark from their fireplace started a fire in the chimney Tuesday evening. The Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District responded to a call at 7:32 p.m. near the corner of Route 38 and Francis Road in Maple Park. The chimney fire had spread into the walls of the residence.

    A Wisconsin woman driving a stolen vehicle caused two crashes in the Western suburbs Saturday night, including a multiple-car pileup that killed herself and another driver, officials said. Campton Hills police responding at 8:46 p.m. to a four-car crash at 42W761 Route 38 determined that a vehicle driven by Jennifer Liston, 30, of Madison, Wis., was traveling at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred.
