Barrie Komorski was prepared to wait out the flooding in her home near East Dundee Thursday, but her little dog, Roxi, forced her to rethink her decision. For 17 years, Komorski, 60, has lived in the Richardson subdivision, an area that backs up to the Fox River and is notorious for its floods. The floods forced her out of her home in 2007 and 2010. But after Nicor shut her gas off as a precautionary measure, a move that meant she wouldn’t have any heat, Komorski changed her mind about fighting the floods.

E. Dundee garage fire put out quickly Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Firefighting crews quickly extinguished a garage fire in East Dundee Friday morning, authorities said. Officials from the East Dundee Fire Protection District said crews were dispatched at 6:55 a.m. to the 100 block of South Van Buren Street, and upon arrival, found a single-story detached garage/wood working shop with light smoke showing. It was soon after extinguished.

East Dundee firefighters are depending on the success of the annual meat sales to carry their fundraising goals for the year. They won't have the summer barbecue as they have had in years past; they will just sell packages of chicken, steaks, and pork chops. That sale will take place from 3-11 p.m. Saturday, July 14, in Max Freeman Park. Last year the sale brought in $1,500, said Paula Roland, treasurer of the East Dundee Firefighters' Association. Association members sponsor the sale.

Old Sherman Hospital gets final hurrah before demolition Jun 25, 2012 12:00 AM
A portion of the old Sherman Hospital on Elgin's east side is enjoying a final hurrah as a firefighters' training ground before it meets the wrecking ball in July. All this week, more than 300 personnel from 14 fire departments and protection districts are using a rare opportunity to practice their high-rise firefighting skills in the four-story building.

This fall, it is all but guaranteed that residents within the East Dundee Fire Protection District will vote on a ballot question, one that asks whether theyre willing to pay for a new fire station. Monday night, the East Dundee Village Board agreed to develop an intergovernmental agreement between the village and fire district that would outline a land swap deal between the parties.

Traditions honored at Elgin firefighter memorial May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
About 50 area residents attended the Elgin Area Firefighters Memorial Service held Saturday at the Elgin Fire Barn #5 Museum. Traditions "define who we were, and who we are," Huntley Fire Chief James Saletta said. Representatives of about a dozen local fire departments attended the ceremony.

If you live in the East Dundee Fire Protection District, you can expect to vote in a referendum in November on whether you would pay for a new fire station. If voters endorse whats expected to be a $4.25 million measure, the fire department would move out of its current station near village hall and build its new station on three acres on Route 25 the village will purchase next week for $650,000 and would donate to the district.

Instead of raising the tax levy in East Dundee, one trustee says the board should consider freezing it to current levels. Freshman Trustee Allen Skillicorn is opposed to increasing the levy and argues that in the current economy, the village should think about seeking some sort of relief for the taxpayers.

The East Dundee Fire Protection District promoted acting chief Steve Schmitendorf to the rank of chief this week. Schmitendorf served as assistant chief under former chief Mark Rakow who was removed from the post 15 months ago, due in part because he refused to attain advanced certifications.
