    Federal, state, and country officials will tour Kane County this week to determine if the damage incurred from last month's flooding rains warrants a federal disaster declaration. "The Fox River may have gone down, but (inspectors) will be looking at the marks made by the high water levels," said Don Bryant, director of Kane County's Emergency Management Agency. "They also may be knocking on some residents' doors to see how badly they were affected."

    The spirit still exists, but public enthusiasm is waning for “Operation Sweettooth.” In December, with Christmas being the traditional busiest time for orders for cookies to be sent to U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, the project’s coordinators, Roger and Diane Ahrens, sent only six boxes of the holiday treats. But they vow to continue until all they're all home.

When the clock struck midnight on Jan. 1, 5,252 had walked through the pantry’s door in the Meadowdale Shopping Center, said FISH President Mary Graziano.

  • Longtime West Dundee postal employees retiring Jan 24, 2013 11:29 AM
    There's probably not a West Dundee post office customer that Sue Teas or Gary Steinmann does not know. Together they have been working as either postal carrier or clerk for a total of 69 years. The two longtime employees and customer favorites will retire at the end of January. “When I started, the mail was hand sorted; now, it's all done with automation,” Steinmann said. “After working here a while, we all get to know the regular customers.”
