West Dundee arts center taking shape May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
A downtown West Dundee building that once housed a grocery store and later a hardware store, is on the road to becoming a regional performing arts center. Rick Browne, a local architect and actor, has drawn up plans to convert the former Ziegler's Ace Hardware store into the Fox Performing Arts Center. But as part of an agreement with West Dundee, Browne has until Aug. 1 to raise $500,000 in seed money. It's a figure village leaders say would prove there's enough support to make Browne's vision a reality.

East Dundee banquet hall fined seven times for noise May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
An East Dundee business that faced neighborhood opposition long before it even opened has been fined seven times for playing music too loudly. Premier Banquets owes $700 for six violations that occured in March and one more that happened in April. Owner Jim Nagle has since installed sound-proofing insulation to keep the noise down.

Little has changed in 19 years at Dundee Farmers MarketMay 17, 2012 12:00 AM
For the last 19 years, gardeners, farmers, and antique collectors have gathered in the grounds of the Dundee Township Visitor's Center every Saturday starting in May to sell their wares as the Old Dundee Farmers Market. Except for the number of vendors and customers, not much has changed since the first year of the popular market.

She lived overseas for awhile, raised five children and stood by her husband through a serious illness before deciding to follow her dream. She started law school just a few months after her husband died and passed the bar when she was 50. Now she is the legal services director with Elgin-based Administer Justice.

Kane forest preserve dishonest about gravel mining, report says May 4, 2012 12:00 AM
A new report created by the League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area says the Kane County Forest Preserve District was dishonest in its handling of potential gravel mining at the Brunner Forest Preserve. Even discussing the creation of a mining operation goes against the very mission of the district, the report states. Now the district has a trust problem that has the league calling for separation of the district from the county board. But District President John Hoscheit said gravel mining isnt going to happen; its a dead issue, and anyone still fixated on gravel mining probably has an alternate agenda, such as not liking the Longmeadow Parkway project.

Gilberts trustees are looking for volunteers to make the Community Days summer festival as successful as it was last year. Organizers estimate they'll need 30 volunteers, the same number as last year, to keep the festival site clear of trash and running smoothly.

Want to paddle your own canoe? The Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race is accepting registrations for the 51st annual race, which will be held Sunday, June 3, on the Fox River. There will be two races offered - a 10-miler starting in St. Charles and a 6-mile race beginning in Batavia. Both races will end in Aurora.

Starting July 1, the Dundee Township Public Library District will be known as the Fox River Valley Public Library District. Officials said its old name didnt accurately reflect the community the district serves and late last year, authorities asked residents, employees and benefactors to come up with a new one.
