Lauren Van Vlierbergen, Gabby Juarez and Kelly Meehleib took the first steps toward Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday in convincing fashion. Van Vlierbergen, the Jacobs senior who finished fourth in the Class 3A state girls cross country meet last season, won the Class 3A Palatine regional Saturday while Juarez, Streamwood’s senior speedster who was 49th at state in 2013, was the individual champion at the Class 3A Glenbard North regional. Meehleib, a Huntley senior who did not qualify for state last year, was the champion at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford regional, also leading her team to the title.

  • Larkin, Streamwood will battle for regional soccer title Oct 22, 2014 10:46 PM
Somehow, someway, Larkin defender Inno Simental had 5 assists alone on throw-ins heading into postseason play. And somehow, someway, Moises Raya managed his only goal of the season on a header off a throw-in. The boys soccer postseason calls for some unconventional ways of winning sometimes as both No. 2 seed Dundee-Crown and No. 3 Larkin would know very well in consecutive years, but the fact that Simental assisted twice on goals off throw-ins and Raya headed in the game-winning with 6:36 remaining of a 2-1 Royals win in a Class 3A Streamwood semifinal matchup Wednesday will definitely add to the tale that ties D-C and Larkin together in postseason action.

Muddy, wet conditions. Didn’t matter. Annoying mist. Didn’t matter. You get the picture. Nothing was going to deter Jacobs senior standout Lauren Van Vlierbergen from capturing her third straight Fox Valley Conference individual championship. Van Vlierbergen, who finished fourth in Class 3A in 2013, posted a 3-mile time of 17:53.8 to finish first at Saturday’s Fox Valley Conference girls cross country championship at Hickory Nut Grove Park in Cary.

Cary-Grove’s Larkin Hanselmann is one of the Trojans’ smaller players at 5-foot 7, 150 pounds, but his words after a 56-0 thumping over Dundee-Crown at Al Bohrer Field in Cary Friday night spoke volumes if anything about the Daily Herald’s third-ranked team and the top-ranked team in Class 7A according to The Associated Press.

Senior Night. Last regular-season home game. It was an emotion-filled night for Cary-Grove senior libero Bree Coffey. But the senior, who will play in the Big Ten at Rutgers next season, didn’t let the emotions of the evening hinder her performance. With 15 digs and 2 aces, Coffey’s efforts help propel the Trojans to a 25-19, 25-15 over pesky Dundee-Crown in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls volleyball action in Cary Thursday night.

  • Crystal Lake South’s Ahsmann fighting return of cancer Oct 15, 2014 6:12 PM
Crystal Lake South football coach Chuck Ahsmann has lived with marginal zone lymphoma for 22 years, so when the 52-year-old felt fatigued in recent months he wasn’t sure if the source was his ongoing cancer fight or the natural effects of aging. However, a biopsy of bone marrow drawn from Ahsmann’s hip during an annual checkup three weeks ago revealed a rising cancer rate of 20 percent. The slow-growing tumor was depleting the red blood cells that carry oxygen to his muscles, causing fatigue and other symptoms.

  • Jacobs blanks Dundee-Crown Oct 14, 2014 9:56 PM
Chris Rigby and the Jacobs soccer team will forever remember the night they upset District 300 rival Dundee-Crown to conclude the 2014 regular season in Algonquin Tuesday. Not because it was senior night and for bragging rights, as the Golden Eagles downed the Chargers 1-0 in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division finale but because they did so in downright ugly conditions: a heavy rain from start to finish which saturated the field, chilly temperatures in the low 50s and a biting north wind blowing in excess of 20 mph.
