  • Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown loaded again Dec 17, 2014 8:42 PM
    Five teams who are currently undefeated highlight the field for the 32nd Charger Classic Christmas girls basketball tournament at Dundee-Crown, which kicks off on Friday, Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. Prospect, Hononegah, Stevenson, Burlington Central and New Trier have yet to lose this season. Defending champion New Trier and runner-up Prospect are on opposite ends of the bracket, while Burlington Central would meet New Trier in the quarterfinals if the Rockets get past Bartlett in the first round and New Trier defeats the host Chargers.

    Dundee-Crown saved its best for last. Scoring the final 15 points of the game in the last 2 minutes and 30 seconds, the Chargers overcame a 6-point deficit to defeat Larkin 60-51 in nonconference girls basketball action in Carpentersville Tuesday night.

    In keeping with the holiday season, the Crystal Lake South boys basketball team was in the giving spirit Tuesday in a 53-39 victory over visiting Dundee-Crown. The Gators improved to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division by recording 17 assists on 23 field goals.

    Undersized Dundee-Crown realized it would take a solid 32-minute effort to beat the visiting DeKalb boys basketball team. The Chargers stayed with the talented Barbs for 16 minutes, leading 16-15 at halftime. But DeKalb utilized its size and talent in outscoring the host Chargers 32-23 in the second half to post a 47-39 win in nonconference action in Carpentersville Friday night.

    Any wrestler going up against Cary-Grove senior Michael Gomez in the 285-pound heavyweight division might find themselves to be in the wrong place at the wrong time this season. With the second-place place finish in the Class 7A state football championship still fresh in his mind, Gomez certainly has committed his frustrations onto the mat, and when momentum looked to be with the Dundee-Crown wrestlers early in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division meet in Carpentersville, the football star shifted matters in a big way.

    Huntley will have better offensive nights. But the staple of the Red Raiders under coach Steve Raethz is defense and that was certainly on display Wednesday. Holding Cary-Grove without a point for over 10 minutes bridging the second and third quarters, the Red Raiders’ 17-0 run keyed a 45-31 win in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball action in Cary.

    Dundee-Crown boys basketball coach Lance Huber just needed to look at the free throw stat sheet to see why his Chargers dropped a 53-48 decision to Crystal Lake Central in Fox Valley Conference crossover action in Crystal Lake Wednesday. Huber cringed when he saw the cold hard facts. His Chargers connected on only 4 of 12 from the free-throw line, including going just 3-for-10 effort from the line in the pivotal fourth quarter.

    Cary-Grove girls basketball coach Rod Saffert acknowledges without hesitation his team will need scoring help for senior standout Katie Barker as the season goes on. But for now Barker is doing a yeoman’s job of carrying the scoring load for the Trojans. The 5-foot-10 Ohio University recruit did so again Tuesday when she poured in a season-high 31 points to help Cary-Grove hold off Dundee-Crown, 59-50, in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division opener for both teams.

    The turkey having settled, it’s time to move to step two of the girls basketball season, which kicks off in earnest this week as conference play around the Fox Valley area begins. But on Saturday, conference wars take a break for the second annual Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin. Three top-notch boys games will be played and one very marquee girls game, at 3:15 p.m., will pit defending Class 3A state champion Montini against defending Class 4A state champion Whitney Young of Chicago. Young is coached by 1992 Larkin graduate Corry (Carter) Irvin, the brother of Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter.

    Bartlett 62, Wheaton Academy 59 (OT): Ryan DiCanio scored 24 points including going 10-for-10 at the free-throw line as the Hawks won the championship of the Wheaton Academy tournament. Jordan Anderson added 11 points to the win, Robbie Jimenez scored 10 and Tyler Pauletti had 9.
