    Dundee-Crown tops rival Jacobs Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Play-in games for any type of team can be a pressure-cooker. Try it on for size when you bring in a District 300 rivalry into mix. Jacobs sought its third win against rival Dundee-Crown this season Monday night at the Class 4A Streamwood girls basketball regional and for the first 8 minutes, leading by as many as 9 while making 4 of its first 5 shots, the Golden Eagles looked as if they were on their way to completing that feat. But D-C flipped a switch and Jacobs went ice cold. The Chargers outscored the Golden Eagles 57-35 from the second quarter on in a 61-45 victory over Jacobs,

Cary-Grove’s Cullen the man at Barrington Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
How do you improve on perfection? Don’t ask Michael Cullen, because the Cary-Grove sophomore still feels he’s a long way from being there. Of course his opponents might feel a little differently if they were asked. Another simply smashing performance from Cullen was put in the books following a dominating 11-1 major decision in his 113-pound final against Colin Kenyon (New Trier, 33-8) at the Class 3A Barrington sectional Saturday. The win sends the Trojans’ star into the 3A state tournament on the front foot, and a well-deserved top 4 seed when things begin Thursday on the big floor of Assembly Hall in Champaign. Cullen (42-0) will be joined by teammate Michael Underwood (138) and Logan Hanselmann (120) both for the first time, after each won in dramatic style in their afternoon state qualifying bouts.

  • Dundee-Crown snaps Huntley’s Valley streak at 29 Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Huntley’s 29-game winning streak against division opponents was gone in 29 seconds. Consecutive Dundee-Crown 3-pointers by seniors Dylan Kissack and Brandon Rodriguez 29 seconds apart turned a tenuous 2-point lead into an 8-point cushion with 1:49 to play and propelled the Chargers to a 47-38 victory in Carpentersville Saturday night.

Lakes senior forward Jake Kohler and Benet senior guard Christen Prasse have earned MVP honors from the Daily Herald for their recent basketball performances. Kohler blocked a last-second layup attempt to help Lakes defeat North Chicago by a point and move the Eagles into a first-place tie in the league. Prasse tied a personal best with 30 points plus 7 assists in a decisive victory over Providence.

Huntley closing on on FVC Valley 3-peat Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The Huntley boys basketball team is on the verge of completing a Fox Valley Conference three-peat. The Red Raiders (15-6, 9-0) can wrap up their third straight FVC Valley Division title tonight with a win against second-place Dundee-Crown (16-5, 7-2) in Carpentersville. Huntley defeated the Chargers 45-38 on Jan. 19. “This is a big week for us in terms of our goals and where we stand going into the playoffs,” senior forward Amanze Egekeze said after Wednesday’s victory at Crystal Lake South. “We know we’ve got to go on the road, play at a high level, execute and get better with each game.”

  • Third-quarter surge lifts Dundee-Crown Feb 6, 2013 12:00 AM
It was a third quarter to remember for Dundee-Crown and a nightmarish quarter to forget for Prairie Ridge. Outscoring PR 20-3 in the third quarter, D-C rallied from a 13-point second quarter and eventually pulled out a 50-46 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball win over the host Wolves in Crystal Lake Wednesday night.

  • Jacobs’ Ryan claims 106 title at Huntley Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
At roughly the same time last year, Jacobs wrestler Austin Ryan was told by the IHSA he could no longer wrestle in the sectional semifinals after suffering a concussion, which prevented the then-sophomore a run to state. With his health no longer an issue, the IHSA can’t stop Ryan this time. The Golden Eagles’ junior walked away with the 106-pound regional title over Harlem’s Adam Zacharuk 5-1 in the Class 3A Huntley regional Saturday afternoon.

  • Dundee-Crown turns the tables on Jacobs Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
In what was his last game coaching in the Dundee-Crown gym, the swan song for Jacobs boys basketball coach Jim Hinkle became a bitter pill to swallow. After Nick Ledinsky and Will Schwerdtmann torched the Chargers in a double-overtime win in Algonquin on January 15, the assignment Dylan Kissack and Brandon Rodriguez received from D-C coach Lance Huber in Friday night’s rematch was pretty simple. “Obviously Ledinsky and Schwerdtmann lit us up in the first game, they were fantastic,” Huber said. “When you’re assigned to guard them, you kind of want a shot of proving what you can do and that’s some pretty big motivation.” In front of a raucous crowd of approximately 1,900 that invigorated D-C, Kissack and Rodriguez got their shot and held the Jacobs duo to 11 points combined on 5 of 18 shooting while accounting for half of the Chargers’ points a 60-44 Fox Valley Conference Valley win between the District 300 rivals.

    Elgin-Larkin, Jacobs vs. Dundee-Crown set to go Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley area’s two fiercest boys basketball rivalries have produced the season’s two best games to date. Larkin has defeated crosstown rival Elgin twice this season, most recently a 60-51 victory in the Elgin Holiday Tournament title game. But it was the first meeting — Larkin’s 76-73 double-overtime victory on Dec 12 — that will go down as one of the best in the history of the 121-game series, which Elgin still leads 79-42. Not to be outdone, Jacobs and Dundee-Crown battled through two overtimes on Jan. 15 before the Golden Eagles prevailed 76-66. Host Jacobs tied that game at the regulation buzzer when senior Nick Ledinsky drained a step-back 3-pointer from the corner.

Dundee-Crown’s Griggel turning around his bad luck Jan 30, 2013 12:00 AM
If there was a category below bad luck, Dundee-Crown senior wrestler Raymond Griggel may very well qualify for membership. But he hopes that changes in the upcoming state series.
