Just another step toward ultimate goal for Jacobs Jun 1, 2013 12:00 AM
The Jacobs baseball players considered Saturday's 9-0 sectional championship victory the halfway point. For District 300 rival Dundee-Crown, it was the anticlimactic end of a magical postseason run. “Our outcome goals were to win a regional, then a sectional, then a supersectional, then state,” Jacobs senior catcher Greg Sidor said. “We've got two of them knocked off. Now we're trying for the next two. I don't know that I've completely wrapped my mind around that yet, but it seems pretty realistic right now.” Championship aspirations tend to become more realistic once a team draws within three victories of winning a state title as the surging Golden Eagles have. A program that never previously won 20 games or a regional title now has 25 wins and a shiny new sectional plaque to bookend the regional plaque it won last Saturday.

Jacobs blanks Dundee-Crown for 1st sectional title Jun 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Jacobs baseball coach Jamie Murray had a lot of respect for the run Dundee-Crown was on leading up to the sectional championship game on Saturday. In beating Fox Valley Conference powerhouses Huntley and Prairie Ridge, Murray knew a hot Charger team could score runs at anytime, none more indicative than their 10-run first against PR on Wednesday. But by the same token, Murray didn't want his Golden Eagles losing sight of the way they had played up to this point either. Jacobs didn't, and rallied to put 4 runs across with two outs in the first innings and scored 4 more in the second en route to a 9-0 win over its District 300 rival for the Class 4A Huntley sectional championship.

Jacobs vs. Dundee-Crown makes it a special Saturday May 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Nobody saw an all-District 300 sectional title game between rivals Jacobs and Dundee-Crown coming, which is why Saturday morning’s 10 a.m. baseball game at Huntley High School is so intriguing. Jacobs (24-11) was a bona fide threat to reach the Sweet 16 all along. The Golden Eagles jelled late last season as new coach Jamie Murray blended a talented junior class with some key senior contributors. Though they lost 3-2 to Crystal Lake South in an intense regional title game last May, forward momentum had clearly been gained. Jacobs went 25-4 in summer-league play, culminating in a state semifinal appearance at the Phil Lawler Classic. The 2013 spring season couldn’t arrive fast enough. The Golden Eagles lost a talented, veteran shortstop right before the season started for off-the-field reasons, but they persevered and won 20 games for the first time. They subsequently claimed the first regional championship in the program’s 37-year history by scoring 17 runs on 25 hits in wins against CL South and Barrington.

Taking a look back, and ahead, at Fox Valley softball May 30, 2013 12:00 AM
I had a softball player on one of my summer teams for a few years — Lauren Ott was her name — and every time something out of the ordinary would happen in a game she'd say, "That's weird." Which was exactly my thought when the last out was made at the sectional semifinal between Glenbard North and South Elgin in St. Charles Wednesday. That Storm loss brought to a close the 2013 softball season for the 14 schools we cover from the Fox Valley bureau and, well, as Lauren always put it, that's weird. It's the first time since 2006 our little corner of the world didn't have a team advance to at least the sectional final round of the state tournament series.

Underdog Dundee-Crown does it again May 29, 2013 12:00 AM
The Dundee-Crown baseball team administered another round of shock treatment to the IHSA Class 4A playoff bracket Wednesday. An underdog once again, the surging Chargers (11-18) erupted for 10 first-inning runs and were never threatened in a 15-4 dismantling of league rival Prairie Ridge (25-11) in a Huntley sectional semifinal. "We love being the underdog," D-C junior Zach Girard said. "We like people doubting us. Then we come out and prove them wrong. And we're going to keep doing it." Winners of three straight for only the second time this season, the Chargers advance to Saturday's 11 a.m. sectional title game against the winner of today's semifinal between District 300 rival Jacobs (23-11) and Hononegah (23-8). It marks Dundee-Crown's first appearance in a sectional title game since former coach Fred Bencriscutto's 2007 squad qualified for the Class AA state finals.

Damato, Dundee-Crown stun Huntley May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Anyone who figured Huntley’s talented baseball team would have a cakewalk against a field of sub-.500 teams at the Class 4A DeKalb regional took a metaphorical pie to the face Saturday, thanks to Dundee-Crown’s 3-0 title-game upset. No. 2 Dundee-Crown (10-18), which placed seventh out of seven teams in the competitive Valley Division of the Fox Valley Conference, shocked FVC Valley co-champion Huntley (25-7) behind Vince Damato’s 4-hit shutout to win the program’s eighth regional championship.

C-G’s Hurley sticks with it, makes shot and discus finals May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
The pressure was off, as far as Cary-Grove sophomore Ricky Hurley was concerned. On his second throw during the shot put competition at the Class 3A session of the boys track and field state championships at Eastern Illinois University and O'Brien Field, Hurley launched the shot a personal-best 55-3.25 to secure a spot in Saturday's finals. His effort was the fifth-best toss of the preliminary round. He also advanced to Saturday's discus finals.

Ludwig, Dundee-Crown roll over DeKalb May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
Not that long ago, Jared Ludwig was pitching for the Dundee-Crown sophomore team. Thursday, he found himself on the mound in a postseason game. Ludwig acquitted himself just fine, thank you, holding DeKalb to 3 hits over 5-plus innings while leading the Chargers to a 10-0, 6-inning victory. D-C faces Huntley on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the title in the Class 4A DeKalb regional.

Jacobs celebrates first sectional crown May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Whether you were a Jacobs tennis player graduating or not, Saturday was quite the celebration to say the least. The Golden Eagles, who qualified all 6 of their participants in the Elgin sectional to state, won the sectional with 29 points, the program's first sectional championship. South Elgin placed second with 24 and Hampshire was third with 21. The meet, which was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. was moved up to 2 hours to accommodate Jacobs' graduation at the Sears Centre.

Full circle for Bianchina, Geneva at Hoffman Estates May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Senior Mike Bianchina served as an alternate runner for Geneva when it won its last boys track and field sectional title in 2010.Three years later in the Hoffman Estates Class 3A sectional, Bianchina helped the Vikings to their second title in four years.Despite finishing tied for sixth out of 14 teams at the Upstate Conference tourney last week, Geneva rose to the occasion on Friday night and scored 103 points to top runner-up Schaumburg (88) and St. Charles North (80)."I always thought about it (going out with a sectional title after being part of one as a freshman)," Bianchina said. "This was a great night for the entire team."
