Following years of failed attempts to acquire land for a parking lot from the DuPage County Forest Preserve, St. Francis Catholic High School officials are appealing to a higher power: the Illinois legislature. Officials at the private school in Wheaton are looking to get state law changed to make it possible for St. Francis to get a couple of aces of land in neighboring Belleau Woods Forest Preserve in exchange for land elsewhere in the county. And at least one state lawmaker from DuPage says she's willing to help.

The badly decomposing body of an unidentified man was found Thursday near Salt Creek in Oak Brook, authorities said. A person walking along York Road discovered the body about 7 a.m. floating near a wooden walkway that was flooded due to the morning storms.

Adults interested in some heart-healthy exercise while enjoying the outdoors may want to consider the DuPage Forest Preserve District's "Forest Fitness Walks" from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Mondays through May 20 and again on June 3. "We'll explore different locations so healthy hikers not only receive guided introductions to some of the county's most popular trails, but also experience spring in a variety of habitats," said program leader Dave Andrusyk.

Trout fishing season opens Saturday in three DuPage preserves Apr 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Certain things are worth waiting in line for. Among local fishing enthusiasts, that list apparently includes the Saturday, April 6, launch of the spring rainbow trout season. DuPage County Forest Preserve officials predict cars and trucks will be lined up well before the 6 a.m. opening of the gates at the three DuPage lakes stocked with trout. "By the morning, it's shoulder to shoulder on the shore line," said Scott Meister, the district's natural resource management coordinator.

A Carol Stream volunteer beekeeper, Purple Heart recipient and philanthropist has decided to give his latest donation — $25,000 — to the Carol Stream Public Library. Lawrence DuBose, 92, says he developed a "habit of reading" from a young age, and it's something he'd like to pass onto younger generations. "If I can encourage people to read instead of wasting time on television, maybe I can do some good," he said.

DuPage County deer test negative for fatal disease Apr 2, 2013 12:00 AM
DuPage County Forest Preserve officials are expressing relief after follow-up testing showed the discovery of a deer with chronic wasting disease most likely was an isolated occurrence. Officials were worried the disease, which is fatal to deer, had spread to DuPage after an infected animal was found in Mallard Lake Forest Preserve near Hanover Park. It was the first time a deer in DuPage has tested positive for the neurological disorder.

After spending months juggling dual roles as president of the DuPage County Forest Preserve Commission and interim executive director of the district, Dewey Pierotti is looking ahead to retirement. Pierotti, who plans to step down from the commission in November 2014, says he has no interest in becoming the district's top administrator, despite doing the job on an interim basis since the former director, Brent Manning, stepped down in mid-June. In fact, Pierotti said he won't involve himself in the commission's process to find Manning's replacement.
