Atmosphere almost bests the South American cuisine at Rio's in AddisonMay 15, 2013 12:00 AM
A delicious taste of South America awaits in a strip mall in Addison. Seriously. Rio's leans more toward Peruvian and Brazilian dishes than it does to Argentine ones. A prevalence of seafood, potatoes, corn and pasta means that most ingredients are familiar. But it's the combinations, the sauces and spices, such as black mint, yellow chili peppers and coconut milk, that add an exotic aspect to even a simple dish like steak over pasta.

Pasta perfect: Elgin's Villa Verone does noodles right May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
My recent dinner at Villa Verone in downtown Elgin got off to a bit of a rocky start when our reservation was nowhere on the books on a busy Saturday night. Fortunately, a table opened and we were seated promptly. As its name suggests, the restaurant resembles an old Italian villa, and the menu consists of traditional Italian dishes. "If somebody wants froufrou stuff, my place is not for them," owner Pietro Verone says.

Now Bloody Mary ... there's a drink with stamina; a beverage that sprints into the spring holidays and effortlessly rounds the turn into summer's al fresco scene, even picking up speed for fall tailgating. And suburban bars are putting their own spin on the brunch specialty.

Varied menu, atmosphere draw crowds to Tommy Nevin's in Naperville Apr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
I was looking forward to trying out the southwest Naperville outpost of Tommy Nevin's Pub when it first opened in 2007. On our first visit, the one thing that stood out beside the jovial atmosphere was the noise level in the crowded bar. We decided to give it another try on a recent Sunday. It's still packed, but we found some quieter spots where we could enjoy the varied food and drink menu.
