    Rosemont police are investigating the Friday night shooting death of a 14-year-old Des Plaines boy in an area of apartments near the Allstate Arena, officials said Saturday. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, the victim is Patrick Boswell of the 1600 block of Morse Street in Des Plaines.

    A 38-year-old pedestrian died Friday after she was struck by a minivan near Des Plaines, authorities said Saturday. The death of Allison Flosi, who was hit near her home, was ruled an accident, the Cook County coroner’s office said.

     
  • Police: Arlington Heights man held up gas stations with replica BB gun Jan 2, 2015 7:30 PM
    An Arlington Heights man has been charged with robbing Northwest suburban gas stations after he was caught stalking a station in Des Plaines, police said. Martell J. Flippins, 26, of the 2200 block of Nichols Road, faces five counts of aggravated robbery after he made off with cash, cigars, prepaid cellphones and other items, police said. In some cases, he pointed the plastic, replica BB gun at a gas station employee or left it peaking out of his waistband, police said.

    The sound of noisemakers pierced the air as 400 brightly colored balloons descended to the floor, as more than 40 children and their parents rang in the new year, albeit 12 hours early, at the second annual Preschool Noon Year’s Eve Party at the Prairie Lakes Community Center in Des Plaines. Crafts, coloring, sparkly hats, noisemakers, games, and fun preceded the giant Noon Balloon Drop, after which it took all of 10 minutes for the pint-size revelers to stomp and pop every last balloon that hit the floor.

     
  • Challenges filed in Des Plaines council race Dec 31, 2014 6:18 PM
    Two candidates for aldermanic seats on the Des Plaines City Council have filed challenges to their opponents’ candidacy petitions. Robert Porada, who’s running for alderman in the city’s 7th Ward, has challenged the petitions filed by his opponent, current Alderman Don Smith. And 4th Ward Alderman Dick Sayad has challenged the petitions filed by his opponent, Mark Setzer. The challenges will be examined by the city’s Electoral Board, which will determine whether they’re valid. If upheld, the challenges could result in Smith and Setzer being removed from the April 7 ballot.

     
  • Wheeling fatal crash probe nearly complete Dec 30, 2014 7:22 PM
    The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team’s 3½-month investigation of a crash in which a Wheeling police SUV struck and killed 20-year-old Des Plaines resident Fredi Morales is expected to be complete in the next couple weeks. Police say the length of the investigation is not unusual.
