  • Encouraging start for Wheeling Aug 26, 2013 11:11 PM
Wheeling’s season opening-victory at Deerfield on Monday night signaled what promises to be a rather busy and hectic first week of the 2013 campaign for coach Ed Uhrik’s boys soccer team. And perhaps it could be an eye-catching season in the Mid-Suburban League for the Wildcats. Wheeling exploded with 4 goals in the second period goals to top the host Warriors 4-0 in a Central Suburban/Mid-Suburban Soccer Challenge match on the turf at Adams Stadium.

  • It’s no picnic for Vernon Hills as Deerfield advances May 28, 2013 10:44 PM
Practicing at the beach this week is probably out of the question. But Deerfield outside hitter John Harlan might try to convince his coach of the merits anyway. He and fellow outside hitter Zach Hara jump out of the gym when they throw down kills, which they did over and over again Tuesday in leading Deerfield to a 25-22, 25-19 sweep over Vernon Hills in the championship game of the Antioch sectional.

  • Deerfield drops St. Viator in OT May 21, 2013 10:41 PM
The St. Viator girls soccer team’s bid for another sectional final appearance was there for the taking on Tuesday night. • Weiner, Stevenson find the range against Deerfield Apr 12, 2013 10:01 PM
Jenna Weiner had her hand in a revitalized Stevenson offense — by way of her foot. The Miami (Ohio)-bound Weiner contributed on four of six Patriots goals as Stevenson handled Deerfield 6-1 Friday in a consolation bracket match of the Pepsi Showdown. Weiner scored a goal and assisted on three others — each of them set pieces.

  • Diligently, Deerfield outlasts Grant Apr 5, 2013 10:31 PM
Every inning seemed to be a long one when Grant hosted Deerfield in a nonconference baseball game on a cold and windy Friday afternoon in Fox Lake. But the biggest inning in a game where neither team could cleanly retire the side in order turned a promising beginning into a long and slow march to the finish for Grant. Deerfield turned a 3-run deficit into a 3-run lead in the fourth and was on its way to an 11-5 victory in six innings.

"We are a private school with a public purpose," said Wolcott Trustee Don Monroe, past head of school at Frances Parker in Chicago.

  • Color Kohler, Lakes a winner Feb 16, 2013 11:55 PM
Orange isn’t one of the school colors at Lakes. But the boys basketball team added some orange socks to its uniform on Saturday night for its game against visiting Deerfield. Just for the seniors, though. “All the seniors went out to the mall to get some socks for Senior Night,” Lakes senior guard Jake Kohler said. “We wanted something different, something to help the seniors stand out.” Kohler stood out anyway. With 10 seconds remaining in a tie game, he got his number called for his team’s last shot at the basket. Kohler posted up on the block, hauled in a pass from his teammate and made a strong move to the basket. His bucket with 3.6 seconds remaining, followed by a defensive stand by Kohler and his teammates in the final moments, sealed a 58-56 victory for Lakes, which improves to 21-6 on the season.

  • Proud moment for Pieper, Warren Jan 12, 2013 9:13 PM
He wasn’t the leading scorer, and he won’t make ESPN for a highlight reel dunk, but this was still very much a night that Warren senior Timmy Pieper will not soon forget. Pieper, who was a member of Warren's state championship soccer team this fall, drew applause for scoring against Deerfield as the Blue Devils rolled, 66-30.

  • Deerfield slips past Carmel Dec 28, 2012 10:23 PM
The team that has trouble finishing isn't done yet. Carmel let a second-half lead slip away Friday night in a second consecutive game at the Wildcat Hardwood Classic in a 68-64 double-overtime loss to Deerfield, the tournament's Cinderella darling so far. The Corsairs (6-7) will face Fremd today at 12:15 p.m. for seventh place in this 16-team tournament.

  • Big adjustment benefits Naperville Central Dec 27, 2012 10:17 PM
It seemed Naperville Central’s magical control of the court at the Wildcat Hardwood Classic might be in jeopardy Thursday night. The Redhawks were foundering around out on the court, knotted at 8-8 after one with a Deerfield team that had flustered them out of their up-tempo rhythm. The Warriors, with an upset of Prospect already notched in this tournament at Wheeling, appeared ready to topple the defending champs too, especially when 6-foot-9 center Nick Czarnowski went to the bench in foul trouble. Not to worry, Naperville. The Redhawks fell back on their trademark, turnover-driven defense and turned those Warrior miscues into opportunity baskets en route to a 65-46 quarterfinal victory and a spot in Friday’s 8:45 p.m. semifinal against Notre Dame, a 63-44 winner over Carmel.

  • Porter’s 3 lifts Deerfield past Prospect Dec 26, 2012 10:31 PM
Funny thing about 3-point shot attempts. Sometimes it doesn't matter how many you miss as long as you make one at the perfect time. Prospect found that out the hard way at the 35th annual Wheeling Hardwood Classic, thanks to Deerfield guard Eric Porter. The junior nailed a long, off-balance, falling-out-of bounds 3 at the buzzer as Warriors defeated the Knights 46-43.
