    Hosting an undefeated DeKalb team Friday night that averages 46 points a game, Kaneland didn’t have much room for error hoping to snap a rare 2-game losing streak. Kaneland did a number of things right, moving the ball through the air like some of the vintage Knights teams and showing plenty of heart after falling behind by 17 points early in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Jake Marczuk rallied his team, scoring on an 18-yard run and then lofting a 61-yard touchdown pass to a streaking Connor Fedderly down the right sideline.

Things were definitely looking bleak for the Knights. On Wednesday in DeKalb though, the Knights avenged that 2-1 loss to DeKalb, shutting out the Barbs, 2-0, to win their third straight.

    Rachel MacDonald is living the dream. Just a couple short weeks ago, MacDonald was playing on Barrington’s JV team. Now she’s the Fillies’ latest hero, and not just once but twice in the same week. MacDonald, who had the game-winning hit in Barrington’s sectional semifinal win on Wednesday, did it again Saturday. The sophomore designated player hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, then drove in 2 more runs with a double in the sixth as the Fillies beat DeKalb 6-4 to win the Class 4A Jacobs sectional championship in Algonquin.

    DeKalb’s softball team scored twice in the first inning Saturday. And with senior standout Katie Kowalski in the pitchers circle that’s all the runs the top-seeded Barbs would need. Striking out six with one walk, Kowalski tossed an impressive 2-hit shutout as DeKalb blanked second-seeded Huntley 3-0 in the championship game of the Class 4A Huntley regional.

    A 25-year-old man has been charged with providing alcohol to a minor who crashed his car, killing his sister, after leaving a Hampshire bonfire last month. Derrick L. Buttrum of Hampshire faces up to three years in prison if convicted of providing hard liquor to Tyrus Taylor, 19, who crashed his 1994 Honda Accord near Sycamore, killing his 20-year-old sister, Tiffany, on April 12, according to authorities.

    Things started out well enough for Burlington Central in its Class 2A girls soccer regional final against DeKalb Friday. Anna McMahon fed Alyssa Messina for a pretty goal in the second minute and the Rockets were flying high. But Central couldn’t score again while Morgan Beaty connected twice to carry the Barbs to the 2-1 victory.

    A former St. Charles middle school teacher was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to child pornography possession in DeKalb County. Jerome McCauley, 46, of Sycamore, resigned from his job at a seventh-grade Wredling Middle School teacher after his arrest in October 2013.

    Huntley struggled mightily on offense in the first half of its regional opener against DeKalb. But in the second half, things started to fall into place — like shots. The top-seeded Red Raiders (20-7) made 12 of 16 field goals and 15 of 17 free throws in the second half to pull away from the Barbs and win 58-45 in the semifinals of the Class 4A Belvidere North regional.

    Kaneland is Northern Illinois Big XII East champions again — but it sure wasn’t easy to get there, and it wasn’t easy Friday to finish it. Not until DeKalb missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer was Kaneland able to celebrate a 57-55 win. Combined with a Sycamore blowout Friday of Morris, Kaneland’s victory created a three-way tie for first place between the Knights, Sycamore and Morris at 7-3.

    On most nights, Kaneland coach Brian Johnson would expect a victory when his team puts up 70 points. However, the Knights ran into a sharpshooting DeKalb team Tuesday night. The host Barbs hit nearly 60 percent of their shots from the field, including a stellar 8-for-14 effort from 3-point range. Senior John Pruett tried to keep Kaneland in contention by tallying 20 of his game-high 26 points in the second half, but DeKalb held off a late surge to claim a 76-70 Northern Illinois Big XII East decision.

    Neuqua Valley spent last week in the girls basketball frying pan. Monday it jumped into the fire. The Wildcats turned their defensive heat on DeKalb in Monday afternoon’s Montini Christmas Tournament first-round game, defeating the Barbs 58-35 in Lombard.
