  • Kaneland repeats conference title May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Kaneland has decorated its left-field fence with softball decals featuring the names and numbers of its senior players. The Knights surely did it as a way to honor those seniors, though those big, oversized yellow softballs served a second purpose for Allyson O’Herron — target practice. The Kaneland shortstop, who was brilliant in the field all day, continued her hot hitting at the plate by lining a double off her name on that left-field fence in the Knights’ 4-0 victory over DeKalb.

  • Huntley has what it takes to dump DeKalb Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Whatever Huntley needed, the Red Raiders came up with. Whether it was a clutch shot, a defensive stop, a key rebound, or free throws down the stretch, the Raiders did whatever needed to be done. The result was a 50-46 win against DeKalb in the semifinals of the Class 4A Belvidere North girls basketball regional Tuesday night. Huntley (22-6), the No. 3 seed, will face the top-seeded hosts for the regional title Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Huntley will be seeking its second regional title in three years and sixth since 2003. Thursday’s winner moves on to next week’s Rockford East sectional to face the winner of the Rockford Auburn regional.

  • DeKalb denies Kaneland’s 1st attempt at title Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
The Kaneland boys basketball is seeking a second consecutive conference championship. But visiting DeKalb, which had not won this calendar year, truly upset the apple cart for the Knights’ repeat bid in the Northern Illinois Big XII East Friday night. The Barb hit 8 of 14 third-quarter shots, more than doubling their first-half output in the process, and never relinquished an 8-point lead to start the final quarter in denying the Knights 50-45 in Maple Park.

  • Close call, but Montini tips DeKalb in OT Jan 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Jason Nichols' fears became reality. Montini's girls basketball coach had a feeling his team was not in the proper frame of mind for Saturday's nonconference contest with DeKalb — and he was right. However, despite not being at its best, the Daily Herald's top team still found a way to pull out a 43-38 overtime win against the Barbs in Lombard.

  • Kaneland’s Caroline Heimerdinger chases a loose ball.

DeKalb slows down Kaneland Dec 18, 2012 12:00 AM
A schedule flaw for Kaneland forced the Knights to make a change and play the same Northern Illinois Big 12 East opponent for the second time in a week Tuesday in Maple Park. Unfortunately for the Knights that opponent was DeKalb. The Barbs aren’t much fun to play once these days, let alone a second time so soon. While Kaneland’s defense made the Barbs work, the Knights had too little firepower to keep up, going scoreless in the second quarter to fall behind 19-7 at halftime of an eventual 38-22 loss.

  • DeKalb tips Geneva in OT Dec 14, 2012 12:00 AM
The season hasn't hit the halfway point yet, yet the Geneva girls basketball team already has suffered enough close losses to last a year — and then some.

  • DeKalb denies Kaneland’s comeback Sep 13, 2012 12:00 AM
Kaneland nearly had a comeback for the ages. The DeKalb girls volleyball team had 7 match points Thursday night against Kaneland in Maple Park, only to see the Knights stave off every conceivable final winner the Barbs might entertain. Unfortunately, the Knights' attempt to send the Northern Illinois Big XII East match into a second extra session came up a point short as DeKalb junior Madison Lord had the last of her 7 kills to deny Kaneland. With its 25-20, 26-28 and 25-23 victory DeKalb moved to 17-3 overall and 2-0 in the league; Kaneland fell to 10-4, 0-2.

Kaneland's defense of its IHSA Class 3A baseball title didn't go exactly as planned.

  • Kaneland gets down, keeps fighting back May 2, 2012 12:00 AM
DeKalb brought its big bats to Maple Park on Wednesday, but not even a couple long balls or playing from behind all game long were enough to cool down the red-hot Kaneland Knights. Lexi Roach reached on a bunt single to ignite a 4-run rally in the sixth inning, an uprising that was the difference in a 7-4 win over the Barbs that keeps Kaneland perfect as it closes in on the Nothern Illinois Big 12 East championship.

  • Buschbacher’s slam powers Kaneland Apr 16, 2012 12:00 AM
Kaneland senior Quinn Buschbacher picked a most opportune time to break out of a slump. Trailing host DeKalb 1-0 in the second inning of Mondays Northern Illinois Big 12 East series opener, the Knights leadoff hitter stepped up to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded against Barbs starter Zack Price. Buschbacher promptly launched an 0-1 fastball through a stiff crosswind over the 360-foot sign in center field for a grand slam, giving the Knights the lead for good. Kaneland starter John Hopkins kept the Barbs off balance from start to finish. He allowed 5 hits and walked just one in an efficient 6-2 victory as the Knights shook off Saturdays tough 6-5 loss to Marian Central.

  • Bartlett's Janessa Baker takes the ball to the hoop against DeKalb during a supersectional at Chesbrough Field House in Elgin on Monday night.

Baker the latest Bartlett player to make a difference Feb 27, 2012 12:00 AM
The hardest Bartlett player to find during Monday night's postgame mayhem at Chesbrough Field House was Janessa Baker. DeKalb probably wishes she wouldn't have shown up at all. In a sea of 6-footers on the fabled tartan floor at Elgin High, it was one of the smallest — and quickest — who turned the tide in the Hawks' 48-30 win over DeKalb in the Class 4A Elgin supersectional.

    Destiny favors BartlettFeb 27, 2012 12:00 AM
A dominant 9½ minutes Monday night is sending the Bartlett girls basketball team to state for a second time. The Hawks outscored DeKalb, 28-11, to open the second half, turning a 4-point game into a 48-30 rout of the Barbs in the Class 4A Elgin supersectional at Chesbrough Field House. “It's amazing. Words can't even describe,” Bartlett senior Lisa Palmer said. “It's so surreal. We have been talking about this since we were in elementary school together, our senior year going downstate and now it's really happening.”

  • Kaneland rebounds at DeKalb Feb 10, 2012 12:00 AM
Kaneland realized there was no margin for error heading into Friday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East matchup at DeKalb. After stumbling in last Saturday’s home game against Sycamore, the Knights rebounded with a solid all-around performance to collect a 65-55 victory and remain in the hunt for the league championship.

    Kaneland can’t slow DeKalb Jan 31, 2012 12:00 AM
Kaneland matched host DeKalb’s intensity in Tuesday night’s physical Northern Illinois Big 12 East showdown, but never found a way to solve the Barbs’ suffocating defense. The Knights mustered just 8 field goals in 31 attempts and turned the ball over 19 times as DeKalb claimed a hard-fought 46-31 victory to remain undefeated in conference play.

  • Neil powers Kaneland past DeKalb Dec 16, 2011 12:00 AM
Backdoor cuts are as basic to offense in basketball as a fullback plunge in football. When DeKalb cut its deficit to 4 points late in the fourth quarter of a key Northern Illinois Big 12 West game with host Kaneland Friday night, the Knights turned to Marcel Neil and Thomas Williams.
