  • Kaneland tips DeKalb in final seconds Jan 10, 2015 12:07 AM
Despite missing 2 of 3 free throws to end the first half, Kaneland junior Dylan Vaca had no reservations stepping back up to the line with the game hanging in the balance. With the score tied at 52-52 against DeKalb, Vaca was fouled driving to the basket with 1.4 seconds remaining. Vaca calmly dropped in the first free throw before missing the second intentionally to give the Knights an emotional 53-52 Northern Illinois Big XII East victory in their first home game of the season.

  • St. Charles East claims Chuck Dayton title Dec 27, 2014 11:19 PM
St. Charles East did everything possible to impress this week at the 87th annual Chuck Dayton Tournament, flashing its high-octane offense and turnover-forcing defense against one overwhelmed opponent after another. Everything except play a game with anything on the line in the second half — anything more than whether the Saints would reach triple digits. The Saints entered Saturday night’s championship game against host DeKalb having won their first three tournament games by an average of 37 points. The championship game proved more of the same, played in front of a large and lively crowd. The Saints were pushed for almost a half, their star in foul trouble — and they still ended up winning by 24.

  • Marmion loses heartbreaker at DeKalb Oct 31, 2014 11:28 PM
Jordan Glasgow did everything humanely possible to extend the Marmion football season Friday night. The senior relieved starting quarterback John Tate late in the Cadets’ Class 6A first-round playoff game against DeKalb and promptly scored on a keeper with 51 seconds to play. The 5-yard run one play after Tate left with an ankle injury brought the Cadets to within a single point of DeKalb. Marmion elected to go for a 2-point conversion, only to see Glasgow fall a few yards short after a damaging delay-of-game penalty moments before.

After cruising to a second straight Class 4A regional title at home on Thursday, the Huntley girls volleyball team is hoping it’s just a steppingstone to bigger and better things ahead. The Red Raiders will begin their quest for their first sectional title since 2001 when they take on Cary-Grove Tuesday at the Crystal Lake South sectional on Tuesday and if Thursday’s convincing 25-13, 25-16 win over DeKalb is any indication, they would appear poised to make a serious run.

Hosting an undefeated DeKalb team Friday night that averages 46 points a game, Kaneland didn’t have much room for error hoping to snap a rare 2-game losing streak. Kaneland did a number of things right, moving the ball through the air like some of the vintage Knights teams and showing plenty of heart after falling behind by 17 points early in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Jake Marczuk rallied his team, scoring on an 18-yard run and then lofting a 61-yard touchdown pass to a streaking Connor Fedderly down the right sideline.
