    Conductor Andrew Grams conducts Beethoven's Fifth Symphony with orchestral opera selections by Wagner and Weber for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra at the Hemmens Cultural Center. Concerts, film screenings and gallery shows are all part of the Charlie's Center for the Arts — All of the Arts, All Over Town event at different St. Charles venues. Des Plaines hosts its Fall Fest 2014 at Lake Park Memorial Pavilion. And you can find seasonal floral arrangements, silk and dried florals and dried bouquets at the annual Weed Ladies Fall Floral Sale, in the Daniels House at Naper Settlement in Naper.

Humans and their canine friends are invited to Clearbrook's Raise The Woof Pet Festival in Melas Park, Mount Prospect.     Past the graffiti-covered overpass and subway tracks, in a slum penned in by high-rises, 8-year-old Gabriela Aparecida fixes her curly hair into a bun as she waits for a ride to her new favorite activity: ballet. Twice a week, more than 20 girls, ages 5 through 12, board a Volkswagen van for a 10-minute ride to class, where they put on pink or black tights and ballet shoes donated by a dancewear store.

    The calendar says August, but that didn’t stop Santa Claus from visiting midtown Manhattan and snarling a section of Sixth Avenue, much to the bafflement of tourists and the frustration of drivers forced to idle their vehicles.Father Christmas, along with 15 Rockettes costumed as rag dolls, stood on a Radio City Music Hall porch on Thursday as 12 Rockettes dressed as toy soldiers marched on the street below to perform the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.”

    This isn't your pervy uncle's pole dancing. The pole-dancing championship this weekend in St. Charles features gymnastics, athleticism and performances from suburban performers as well as last year's champion--a 26-year-old man. “That's the challenge, to break that stigma people have,” says Sarah Ritzman, who with Caroline Patel, owns Tiger Lily Vertical Fitness and Dance in Geneva. “We're making people realize there's more to it than that."

Quirky alt-pop band OK Go is coming back to its old stomping grounds for a show Friday at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. Twista, the hip-hop artist from Chicago known for his lightning-fast rapping style, will celebrate the release of his new record, “The Dark Horse,” with a show at HOME Bar in Arlington Heights. Conductor James Conlon leads a Mozart opera performance of “The Marriage of Figaro” in the Ravinia Festival's intimate Martin Theatre in Highland Park. All this and more in Friday's Time out!

     
  • Caravello wins Suburban Chicago’s Got Talent competition Aug 9, 2014 9:06 PM

    After wowing the crowd with his rendition of Bill Wither’s “Ain’t No Sunshine” and wowing the judges with his musical evolution over the past several weeks, Dennis Caravello of Mount Prospect was named the winner of Suburban Chicago’s Got Talent for 2014. “This is just surreal,” said Caravello who started playing guitar at age 5 and dropped out of college a bit over a year ago to pursue music.

    The last round of online voting for Suburban Chicago’s Got Talent kicks off at midnight, giving the public one last chance to have their say in picking a Fan Favorite for the summer-long competition. The 10 acts in the summer competition are set to perform at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Prairie Center for the Arts in Schaumburg, and then at the Taste of Arlington Heights on Saturday, Aug. 9, when the grand prize winner and Fan Favorite will be announced.
