    Cubs manager Dale Sveum wasn’t in the dugout as Samardzija took a pitch count of 103 into the seventh inning of Saturday’s 12-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field. He had been ejected by home-plate umpire Joe West for arguing a play at first base in the second inning. Samardizja went to 115 pitches before being taken out, but he probably would have fared no worse than the bullpen.

    The Cubs made a couple more adjustments to their pitching staff Saturday. They placed reliever Rafael Dolis on the 15-day disabled list with what they termed a mild strain of the right forearm. To replace Dolis, the Cubs selected the contract of right-handed reliever Blake Parker from Class AAA Iowa. The Cubs also tweaked their starting rotation to give lefty Travis Wood a break.

    Scott Hairston hit a grand slam and Matt Garza got his first victory of the season and the Cubs extended their winning streak to five games by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 on Friday. Alfonso Soriano had a two-run homer and Cody Ransom added a solo shot for the Cubs, who have won five straight for the first time since winning seven in a row from July 31-Aug. 6, 2011.
